PeverilPeril 3,300
I've been searching for ponds that I used to fish in as a lad in the early 50's. Iremongers and Martins Pond were easy to locate but I can't find Fowlers Pond. Any one know of it?
tomlinson 879
There has been pevious discussion about Fowler's Pond somewhere in the annals but I don't remember where. The pond itself disappeared years ago like many other things enjoyed by we kids in the 50s.
katyjay 5,091
Do you mean the Fowler's Pond at the junction of Cinderhill Rd and Nuthall Rd? I do believe it was on the property of Basford Miners Welfare, I fished it as a kid, as did all the kids on Bells Lane Estate.
Cliff Ton 10,547
I don't know the area, but based on what katyjay has said, is it this?
benjamin1945 16,281
Thats now the Gateway hotel' often tried to remember what was there before.
Dave 48 847
I think it was situated just to the left of Basford Miners Welfare ( Creepers ) as you looked at it standing on Nuthall Road,
katyjay 5,091
The Bells Lane island nowadays is huge compared to the original one. The trees in the middle of today's island were next to Fowler's Pond, I do believe.
FLY2 10,109
My late mate, Rob237 reckoned he lost his virginity near there. If anybody knows what happened to it, then let me know, and I'll tell him when I get up there in the future. LOL
PeverilPeril 3,300
#4 ...done it again Cliff Ton. Yes that's Fowlers pond. No wonder I couldn't find it! In the late 50's I drove my 1938 Morris 8 over it when we were ice skating there.
poohbear 1,360
Fished for tiddlers and frogspawn there over the years in the fifties...more or less opposite Embassy Tyres behind a high sandstone wall.
benjamin1945 16,281
At least Gateway have retained a water feature 'poohbear' but don't think they'll let you fish for tiddlers in it though, ive seen the odd drunk fall in,when we were doing the 'Door-work' there.lol'
Cliff Ton 10,547
Looking at a wider view to the east, Fowler's Pond seems to have been connected to Basford Hall; a sluice and weir get a mention in the 1880s.
katyjay 5,091
Interesting to see Brickyard Square opposite the pond. This was Holden Square in my childhood, I thought for pit workers at Cinderhill/Babbington pits. What year are the maps Cliff Ton?
Cliff Ton 10,547
That map is late 1880s. The place is named Brickyard Square until around the 1920s/30s, when it changes to Holden Square.
tomlinson 879
I've got a feeling that there was a shop on the Sherborne Rd end of Broxtowe Lane named 'Fowler's'. Newsagent + sweets I think. As kids we thought the pond had something to do with the shop but perhaps my memory is playing tricks.
