DaveN 1,118
I’ve changed internet providers this week and am in the process of setting up a new email account. A computer specialist has suggested the best thing is to have an email account with someone other than my provider. I wondered how many of you have your email through another company other than your provider and if so why? Thanks for your thoughts.
catfan 14,793
Gmail seems to be the flavour of choice these days, I have several email accounts & Gmail works very well.

Cliff Ton 10,470
I have a Gmail and a Yahoo account. I split things between the two so that if one of them throws a wobbly, I only have half the problems. So far I've been ok anyway.
catfan 14,793
Gmail like a lot of others will accept mail from other accounts you have, very useful !
loppylugs 8,429
I have a mixture. Had one with Yahoo for years, it just collects spam. Also Gmail which I hardly ever use and a couple with my service provider. One I try to keep strictly private for friends and family, and another I use for when a company might ask for an e-mail address. Amazing how much spam that one gets. I hate these corperate entitities that think I might read their drivel so they can get more money out of me. Have one in my dog's name too, but not many folks write to a dog. Lol!

Ayupmeducks 1,730
Hotmail accounts aren't very secure Melissa!!! They never have been, hacked daily by wanna be hackers..LOL Us internet oldies found they are only good for one thing, registering on forums.
poohbear 1,360
And some forums won't accept Hotmail registrations because of the spam. Only last night I had to join a forum using Mail.com for that reason.

letsavagoo 963
In very simple terms. The email provided by your internet service provider eg plusnet you log into and download the messages to your computer and store them and your address book on your computer. If you computer is stolen lost or goes wrong you can loose the email stored on it and your contacts etc. that's why you should back up. The other type of email eg yahoo, hotmail etc are stored on the yahoo or hotmail etc computers and you use a name and password to log in and view the emails stored on their servers as are all your contacts. They are not kept/stored on your computer. So you can use any computer to log in and view your email so if your computer goes wrong you can use another to get to your email. It's more complicated but you get the idea. If you change service providers you will loose the email address that the isp give you but your gmail and hotmail etc are unaffected. There's no reason not to have both. I've got my plusnet, Gmail and hotmail.
