New basfordred.

My BMI is 24, just (but only just) in the normal range.

Catfan.

I've had needles in my eye when I had a detached retina, my Father-in-law was with me & almost fainted, the Doc had to get him a glass of water & seemed more concerned about him than me, lol..

Anyone remember the call up for National Service medicals?

As an apprentice, my call up was deferred until 21. In 1959 a bus load of us 21 year olds from Raleigh, ROF, RR etc., were sent to Mansfield for our call up medicals. We handed our bits of paper to the officer at the door of what looked like a community centre hall and he told us to strip off. I remember the scene vividly. There were 5 or 6 desks spaced around the hall and one in the middle. Each desk manned by a doctor. Strip bollock naked and carrying our neat (oh yes, the officer made us fold our clothes into a neat pile, so military discipline started immediately) pile of clothes, we were ordered from desk to desk and given various tests by each specialist doctor. The forth or fifth test was hearing. The doc told me to turn around and he said something to the back of my head. He said "did you hear that"? I shook my head and he passed me! Next desk! The last desk was eyesight. The doc took a quick look at my very thick glasses then handed me a piece of paper, telling me to take it to the desk in the middle. I looked at the paper and it said '4' on it. The centre desk was for the grading officer who told me that I had failed the medical.
