Compo 10,328
Can anyone tell me what these two tools are for, please? They both came from a toolbox owned by the late father-in-law , who was a joiner and during WWII a ship's carpenter. The first is a long, curved tool with a chisel-like end, roughly 23 inches long. The hand file is a standard Homebase file, for comparison only. The second is a strange tool with posts around a triangular plate and a central screw. It looks like it might be some kind of corner setting device.
Waddo 921
Tool no2 is a jig, to hold two bit's of wrought iron at right angles ready for welding. Think gates, railings ect. Tool no1 would appear to be some form of medieval back scratcher or nose picking device.

jonab 1,644
Is it a hollowing tool for use on a lathe (to form the inners of round boxes/bowls)?).
PeverilPeril 3,288
I think the corner clamp is more likely to be for carpentry. If it was for welding it would show some evidence of use and probably be a heavier duty device. Maybe the chisel is for finishing slots or blind pockets in wood. The 'heel' indicates that the chisel was used in a levered scooping manner - the heel being the fulcrum. For turning insides of bowls maybe the cutting edge would not be square? Only guessing of course...interesting
loppylugs 8,429
Tool number one looks a bit like a weed puller I have. Forked end really good at pulling up dandelions and other weeds with a thick root. Agree with other posters on the corner clamp or jig.
annswabey 599
My husband, a Cabinet Maker, says the long curved tool is a swan necked chisel, used for cleaning out the bottoms of deep mortices, like a mortice lock
Compo 10,328
Thank to all for the responses. Given that the tools came from a carpenter's toolchest I would think that the corner setting tool is for frames and the, for chisel it certainly is, must certainly be what Ann's husband says - a deep mortice chisel.
