  1. Nonna, hope you will be ok. We just managed to depart from Florence the day before they had that huge hailstorm on the Friday. The weather is certainly very bizarre in Italy at the moment.
  2. There must be loads. From a textiles point of view - Darning socks instead of buying new. Unravelling hand knits to make new ones with the wool. Mending shoes (cobblers!) instead of buying new. It’s a bit late to put my brain to work on this one, no doubt I will think of some more.
  3. On a totally different note my husband mowed the lawn yesterday and managed to shut one of our cats in the shed for 10 hours! Fortunately it’s not in the sun. Oops
  4. Many congratulations Lizzie that’s a great innings.
  5. Thanks Lizzie for the info about the art through the eye of a needle. I watched a programme on the guy a while ago and will definitely be going to see this.
  6. I believe that Putin had the Ukrainian city where the band came from hit with missiles before they came on stage. That’s how much he cares.
  7. Phil, not sure why she is described as a ‘woman of colour’ Was she not just a woman ? On another note, do you do your own composting? You can always mix half of that when it’s ready with half bought compost. I can understand your comments about peat free as a lot of it soon dries out and is very woody. At least the peat compost did hold the moisture. One of the reasons for not depleting the peat bogs is that they absorb so much carbon, even more than trees which can only be a good thing.
  8. Aww Margie maybe it will improve and hopefully is just temporary. Just got back early hours from my favourite city Florence. I never want to come back! I have never seen so many Yanks there before, think they’ve re invented the Grand Tour doing whistle stop 2 day visits over a fortnight to the places where you need a whole lot more than that.
  9. Col, don’t worry about the teeth, you’re better off without them. Lizzie would agree. I had my latest out two weeks ago which was mithering me (is that a Notts word ?) Took the bull by the horns as off to Florence on Monday and didn’t want any trouble over there with it while I’m eating lots of pizza.
  10. Yes Bill did you’re right Beekay. He died quite young as a result though. The audience would definitely be waiting a long time anyway in the match as I think Cliff was playing Terry (slowcoach) Griffiths. The 147 was def good telly watching.
  11. Don’t forget Dan Maskell as the voice of tennis and Peter Allis as the voice of golf. Snooker wise, my parents were big fans so I was brought up with it. Can particularly remember watching a match where Cliff Thorburn was gunning for a 147, I think at the Crucible and on the next table behind the screen Bill Werbeniuk was playing and Kirk Stevens was around too and they stopped playing to watch him.
  12. Personally, I think Sean Bean would make a better Richard Sharpe, as already proved.
  13. Getting shorter is all to do with the compaction of the spine I believe as you get older. It is annoying especially if you’re already short like I am. Margie you made me laugh with the 4” 10 and a half bit. Reminded me about when we were little and someone asked our age and we always added the 1/2 as we wanted to be older. Now I just want to say I’m 21 again!
  14. I loved “ Island in the Sun” myself. Talking about radio, I can remember being glued to the radio I think on FM on the police frequency. Many moons ago. You had to get the dial just right to catch the signal. Far more exciting than TV.
  15. My brother went to see Barry many years ago and he warned me that if I ever went do not sit in the front 4 rows as Les Patterson did a lot of spitting. I liked both Les and Edna.
  16. Phil, the carpark that you recommended to us, the one with the slide up shutter, was ok and plenty of parking even on market day. Maybe a lot of non Newark folks assumed it was shut with the shutter down and just drove past.
  17. I can remember it. Wasn’t it run by 2 Greek guys ? I might be wrong.
  18. One of my cats brought me a pigeon’s egg in overnight. Maybe she thought I might like it for breakfast. She does it every year. At least it keeps new ones ones off my allotment, there’s enough of the old brigade.
  19. Margie, I can remember the gypsy rhyme, now you mention it. any news on the meet up date btw? Mrs B
  20. I can remember a gypsy lady who used to come to the bungalow at Tollerton selling pegs. She scared me, I always thought she was going to kidnap me for some reason!
  21. My brother used to have a blue MGA, what a great car it was. Can anyone remember the garage that used to be near Broad Marsh before the centre was built ? Think the name began with a “C” The daughter was Denise.
  22. Not pedantic at all Beekay but I did have to Google why. It’s called “linguistic elision and is used when there are inconvenient sounds or syllables which are omitted to make the word quicker and easier to say.The general rule of thumb ( thum) is that where a consonant precedes the -cester the full word is pronounced as in Cirencester or Manchester. Where it is preceded by a vowel as in Leicester, Gloucester the middle bit isn’t pronounced. There are exceptions though as in Towcester. How foreigners ever learn our language I will never know. The yanks pronounce Loughborough “lowbrow”.
  23. It always was and always will be Suth Ull as far as I’m concerned. If people say to me Southwell I always think “where?”
  24. They’ll certainly be producing them now if not shortly.
