  1. My paternal grandfather served in the Gordon Highlanders in the Great War, embarking for France on 30th December 1915 and was discharged from the army on 24th December 1918. He, like thousands of others, was gassed and some time after the war was given 6 months to live and awarded a pension, which he took as a lump sum. He spent it all going to America to see Caruso, it had been his ambition, leaving my grandmother and children behind. After returning home he lived on for years afterwards dying in the late forties. I never knew him but my dad said he would never talk about his experiences, an
  2. I remember taxiing past a KLM jumbo at Gatwick the first time we flew to America, with BA on a Tri Star, to see family. The sheer size of it was incredible and we marvelled at how they ever got into the air! A couple of years later we went to the states again, this time with Virgin Atlantic on a 747 and the difference in passenger leg room and comfort to the Tri Star was quite remarkable. The Specials reintroduced a whole new generation to ska in the late 70's and early 80's and I'll never forget hearing Ghost Town for the first time. A song that encapsulated the state of the country at the time and is still apt today. R.I.P

  7. A lad I knew years ago came out of the Army after joining as a boy soldier, aged 16, serving 12 years and seeing action in The Falkland Islands & Northern Ireland. He applied to join the Police and at his interview board was told, that whilst he was an exceptional candidate, they were deferring his application for 12 months as 'he had no experience of life in civvy street' and would not, in their opinion, be able to relate to the ordinary man in the street. After some while thinking about it he came to agree with them, in effect he'd become institutionalised. The Army had always provided a

  12. Working on a 36 hour week and taking out 30 minutes unpaid dinner that would be £11.55 gross if my maths is correct. Seems to me to be quite low for 1973 for a 'handyman' who you would expect to have some skills (Obviously not a tradesman) Anyone bear that out or maybe just a euphemism for a glass collector/washer/cleaner etc
