  1. That is a fantastic result for the Reds against a very strong Boro side. Well done Forest!
  2. A lot of people now illegally using it as a thoroughfare, Ray, you've maybe seen, as there is a big temporary electric sign outside the Arkwright building warning of the cameras now in place up Shakespeare Street barring entry.
  3. As a club they're in a world of trouble, Lizzy and I agree it is very sad. I'm really not sure what the way forward for that club is... They have a new manager that nobody wanted nor has any faith in. They are a hapless and directionless football club these days that makes very few sound decisions. The crowds are dwindling and who can blame them if more of the diehards simply give up on them and walk away. Their supporters now appear to be in a situation they feel of having to watch another unsuccessful managerial appointment be played out in front of them - for however long (short) that tak
  4. Well it all came crashing down again after Jamie Fullarton's unbeaten run of...er one game. Notable how he's picking nearly all British players although his squad has many foreign players. Some comments below I noted on a Notts forum. Bl**dy hell - cheer up boys and girls. 'Past caring' 'Deserved to lose 0-6' 'Hear the Conference calling' 'The sooner the clown is sacked the sooner it feels like my club again' 'Angrier and angrier with the garbage being churned out' 'Feeling of complete apathy every week' 'Constant depression and low expectation at Notts County' 'State of terminal de
  5. That's amazing, thanks, a much wider street than I imagined somehow. Dryden Street at that end is now a paved precinct. Interesting to compare a similar modern aspect. https://goo.gl/maps/RXMy8QymYbE2
  6. Good to see that again, Moz, superb, Micky skates brilliantly. Say Hi to her from me.
  7. Thanks, TBI, yes just spotted it on the above map, thanks.
  8. I'm just popping this link here from a few words I wrote about Bestwood some time ago. There's a huge amount of information provided by visitors who have left messages on the blog, including very much our own member here, DJ360, Colin. It's become a mine of information over the years with over 260 comments and many subscribed to it. Nottingham: Old Bestwood
  9. I think these 'from above' shots were taken mid-thirties (as per other thread). Maybe somebody like Benji would know better than me but I think the Arnwood Estate would have been built in the 50s, not sure. A lot of years later, in the 60s maybe, the near the junction between Oxclose Lane and Edwards Lane there was going to be a bypass road to Leapool roundabout at Redhill and a park and ride at the latter. hence the huge circumference of the roundabout the way it was built. It would have travelled across green belt land adjacent Bestwood Country Park (as it became).
  10. Yes, I'm pretty sure that's Bendigo's Ring. The round shapes on the left look like the area where Arnwood Estate is now which backs on to the City Hospital.
  11. Thanks for this image and maps on this and the other threads, K. Interesting the site of the House of Refuge (Female) off Chaucer Street as there is a modern day Women's Centre providing some similar services almost on the same spot on Chaucer Street to this day. Couple of observations on the original overhead image. The white area mentioned as a clearing for the Trent Poly Newton Building to come would not cover the whole area of that building, even before the recent modernisation I don't think. This is unless it was built that shape and extended later, I'm wondering if it was? The Newton B
  12. These things tend to be a bit subjective but for me any such list would have to include Rory Gallagher, Peter Green and Jeff Beck.
  13. Agree that people tend to look back with rose-tinted specs. I suppose it's natural that we do that and probably a healthy thing. There are some areas where this does apply though. One of them for me is the music industry. Notwithstanding current tastes, compare an industry dominated by Simon Cowell infused, throwaway manufactured material - little of it original in any way either - with the musicianship seen in the past. Yes there was rubbish in the charts in the 60s and 70s, of course there was, but there were incredible virtuosi spread across countless bands etc. They weren't rare - they
  14. Generally agree. Thought his stuff with Duane Allman in Derek and The Dominoes was fantastic though.
  15. There are still some wooden bus shelters around. This one is near Lakeside, the old Bestwood Pumping Station. https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@53.0266297,-1.1355719,3a,37.5y,0.58h,78.01t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sl1WSObKHmqtabZjgNc9NzQ!2e0!7i13312!8i6656!6m1!1e1
  16. Yes, easy to access Bestwood Lodge, Goosedale and Papplewick from Colliers Pad too.
  17. Thanks K. Still in existence, if you look at the map with the two chimneys showing in Bestwood Village, the one to the right is of the colliery. From around that point, and where the old Bestwood Hotel still stands at the Eastern end of Park Road, the road - then path continues straight on to Mansfield Road at Redhill and is named Colliers Pad (or sometimes Path). The map references to look out for are Gaunt Hill and Violet Hill I think. Colliers Pad is approx 2.25m long and emerges at Redhill in two spots. The main one these days is on Thornton Avenue, Redhill which is the main access for N
  18. #857 Nice one. I kept thinking Milton Street but was trying to compare the clock tower with the Victoria Hotel which doesn't fit. Problem solved!
  19. #852 I couldn't see a Mapperley bus being on Carrington Street either. Thoughts I've had about the clock tower building are, the Express offices, the old Co-op, the Victoria Hotel and the building where King and Queen Street meet but none of them match. One clue might be in the width of the road.
  20. #10 Great image, Col. Don't suppose you've got a corresponding one to the right of there showing Colliers Pad up and over to Redhill?
  21. #849 Just hazarding a guess, K. Is it possibly Carrington Street with the clock tower on top of Redmaynes?
  22. I've always considered the idea of using the old tunnel in some way as an interesting one. A similar principle is in place of course just down the road with the park and ride/tram set up at the Forest. I'm not sure how much it would help these days as there's still a procession of traffic from where the tunnel would emerge, off in various directions, i.e. Carrington/Sherwood which is snarled up each day.
  23. I'm frequently in search of a sighting of one of these buggers. Curiously spotted fully six times an hour for, no particular reason, throughout the day passing though Redhill from deepest Mansfield but a sparse once an hour when I want to go out for a pint at night. Nice colour though.
  24. I won't get into culture and religious beliefs etc but I hear you. I do think that often the fare at fish and chip shops is nothing like the quality it used to be. It's relatively much more expensive than it used to be for a fish supper too. It's no longer an inexpensive meal. In general, I often fancy the idea of fish and chips but am often underwhelmed by them when I have them here. I do prefer a chip supper when I'm in Scotland with good old Edinburgh chippy sauce lathered on it!
  25. I've never used the Theatre Royal much, not for any particular reason. I really like the Playhouse. Did attend a televised Squeeze gig in the late seventies I think it was. There was a short series of concerts filmed for television, another one being by The Teardrop Explodes which i also attended.
