"The immortal pen of James Fenimore Cooper brings you thrilling tales of excitement, blazing action on the early American frontier, stirring adventures filled with the daring and courage of Hawkeye, the first of the long rifles, and his blood brother Chingachgook, last of the Mohicans!" Only the older ones will remember this!

It was the same at morning assembly if you remember Braddy, the whole school which was all boys in my day would stand while all the teachers filed in and took their place on the stage. it was a rarely old fashioned style of education, Effective though!!

Remember some of the novels we had to read and study in English lit. three that come to mind are "The Kontiki expedition", "A kid for two Farthings" and "Treasure Island" they covered three terms, wonder if they get an airing nowadays.

Unfortunately Mick a lot of people from that generation are mistrustful of the web and pc's, and I agree completeley with you as they are a MINE of information as well as being great company -
I completly agree! they try to make the masses feel guilty but have scant regard for their own globetrotting. personaly I would sooner have a government that stays home and does its job, looking after the UK!, sod being a world power. Roll on next years caribean holiday.

With the price of booze and tobacco being mention in other threads and the illicit Factories for making black market substitutes being found all over the country I wonder how long it will be before we start seeing the violence that goes along with it, or are we seeing it already!.

He also knew a lot about the family that owned most of the local mines before British coal name of Oates! one bit of interest is that they had two identical clocks made, one is on Underwood church to commemorate those that died in WW1 the other was at Pye Hill and when it closed went to the market place at Stoke On Trent. He also said that the stretch of canal between Jacksdale and Langley Mill long ago filled in was done so by the local mines when they no longer required the use of it, Where as locals have long been told it was filled in by the local farmers. -

Saw Ron today and asked him again about the beam engines. Ron was one of the men that were responsible for closing the shafts in fact he was one of four men who were the last to ride up from Underwood closing the louvers as they came. It was when they closed Pye Hill that they found the old beam pump although the steam power plant had long gone the beam, all the pipework, the leather bag at the bottom and the concrete basin at the top where they pumped out to were still there, he says they were donated to Butterley midland railway centre as a display item. Also told me that somewhere in Riddin
