  1. Back from death`s door! One wonders what would have happened to Mandela had he fronted up for treatment under the NHS. Nelson Mandela is 'steadily improving' on his 95th birthday So Happy Birthday to a very great man.
  2. You would love Adelaide Ms. Jackson. Beautiful dry heat, little moisture, -going to be 20 C today (mid winter) -brilliant sunshine. The spring and autumn are without compare. Summer sometimes a little warm(ish),but you can always go to Melbourne !
  3. Never understood the hype for Italy. Britain has the finest cathedrals in Europe,-o.k St Peters is large but have a look at the true magnificence of numerous others in UK. If you want to see Roman remains travel around the Med. multiple remains at a fraction of the cost. Art? Go to Paris,St. Petersburg or even London. I find Italy grossly overpriced (try buying a coffee in St. Mark`s Square in Venice) What can compare to lunch in a country English Inn? I am sure many other members will be able to quote similar examples.
  4. My wife and I don`t want to be cremated! As the High Court prepares to rule on the legality of open-air funeral pyres (? for Hindu funerals wonder if they will get their wives to jump onto the fires also ?)the practice of disposing of bodies by burning is almost as old as the human race itself and has been practised by many civilisations. Indeed cremated remains found in Australia in 1969 are estimated to be at least 20,000 years old, with the bones bearing the signs of an elaborate ritual. In 1963 the Pope finally lifted the ban on Roman Catholics seeking cremation and today in the UK onl
  5. Many years ago,my wife and I stopped at a Hotel in South Australia and for convenience decided to eat in the restaurant. I was looking at working in the town. We had (supposed) top quality steak. It was so awful and tough I asked if it could be wrapped so I could take it home for my Dobi`s. The owners wife came out to apologise. The following day I went to meet the Chairman of the Board and the other Board members. You guessed it it was the Hotel owner ,wife and mates.
  6. The Cavendish cinema was the `up market' place on St. Anns Well Rd.,the Empress opposite the old cholera graveyard on Bath St.,was the other. The Empress had kids cinema on Saturday morning. The one thing I remember about the Cavendish was a magnificent display of 303`s, Brens and Stens and various other weapons in about 1946 (in the foyer upstairs) where the vertical white pillars are. My father however was less than impressed having been impressed for the 6 years before and experienced all the awful effects that these weapons produced.
  7. Pity they have not got the message about the 10`s of thousands of needless deaths by negligence, not to mention the almost unheard of incidence of maternal and neo-natal deaths in Lancashire. Any how, Nottingham does get a mention in the top 14. Sir Bruce investigated the 14 hospital trusts with the worst mortality rates over the past two years. They were: Basildon and Thurrock in Essex; United Lincolnshire; Blackpool; The Dudley Group, West Midlands; George Eliot, Warwickshire; Northern Lincolnshire and Goole; Tameside, Greater Manchester; Sherwood Forest, Nottinghamshire; Colchester, Es

  9. Knowing the `standing' of the Halle,Miss Beefstake(Charlotte ) must be in the stratosphere ! Many Congratulations. Pity her old man is playing his trumpet about England's chances in the Ashes.(although Cowan and Clarke were a `bag of wind'!!!
  10. Just returned from Melbourne . 2 degrees colder than Adelaide, but the biting wind freezes to the bone.Wonderful mid winter day in Adelaide today,no wind, bright blue clear sky, brilliant sunshine, and 17 degrees. The forecast says cloud but they certainly got that wrong. Apart from a few days of heat in the summer the climate in Adelaide is PERFECT.

  12. This photo is as I remember it, but the `picture the past page gives a date of 1895,but the clothing looks more 1940`s/50`s.
  13. The memory I have of the trip from the Bridge to Colwick, was the interesting smells of the engine in the little pleasure boat. (Sure some anorak will know all the details). Would never be able to ply its trade today-no life saving gear kids scramblig everywhere, There are a few photos on this topic somewhere in the records ,(but they were on the football side of the bridge).

  18. There were many pubs around Blue Bell hill /Alfred St.area. The one thing that remains in my mind from the late 40`s early 50`s was the large numbers of kids left outside the pubs to play on the street whist their parents were otherwise occupied inside. My parents used to drink mostly at working men`s clubs, which seemed good value and kids seemed to be welcome. I wonder how such huge numbers of pubs survived.
  19. In 2006, Toyota Australia launched its corporate environmental plan. It aims to increase recycling and eradicate any waste going to landfill. The use of paper towels in company washrooms challenged this – they generate waste that goes straight to landfill. Additionally, their continual production, supply and disposal makes them expensive. For every vehicle manufactured at the Altona plant, 5.62kg of general waste is generated – 0.09kg of which is attributed to paper towels. In 2009/10, the plant sent 10,000kg of paper towel waste to landfill. Toyota Australia purchased 50 machines – 25 wer

  22. When towels are wet ,germs are easily transferred from handle to hand. Also: Paper towels actually carry germs, study shows MONTREAL -- A Canadian study may give you pause for thought next time you reach for a paper towel in a public washroom. The study finds bacteria thrive on the paper products, even on unused towels. The new study by researchers at Laval University in Quebec City, and published in the American Journal of Infection Control, says some of those germs could be transferred to people after they've washed their hands. Research into bacterial transmission from unused pape
