  1. Don`t know, but the parkview after which the flats are named are the old cholera cemetry!
  2. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- My thanks to all those who have sent me e-mails this past year. I especially send my thanks to whoever sent me the one about cockroach eggs in the glue on envelopes because I now use a wet towel with every envelope that needs sealing. Also, I now have to scrub the top of every can I open for the same reason. I no longer have any savings because I gave them to a sick girl (Penny Brown) who is about to die in the hospital for the 1,387,258th time. I no longer have any money at all, but that will soon chan
  3. Dennis, the 2nd half of the post from `At last...' to the end is my thoughts. Hippo girl, I am afraid I did not even realise there were flats adjacent the school. As to the state of the school prior to renovation there are photos of it in use as a ? factory,? grain storeetc on `picture the past.' its a miracle it exists still. To the rest may I suggest you have a look at this 1858 example of English workmanship and stone.
  4. SAVED: VICTORIA LEISURE CENTRE'S HISTORIC TOWER The Victoria Leisure Centre has not been granted listed building status - but the city council has pledged to protect features when it is rebuilt. English Heritage was asked to consider listing the leisure centre by a group including councillors, the civic society and campaigners. Many supporters believe the appearance of the leisure centre, particularly the clock tower, is a vital part of the heritage of east Nottingham. At last! The cretins we have in charge in the council are trying to save some of Nottingham`s past (after destroying so
  5. Now,from my addled cerebral remnant. The `Spar' was the local newsagent in the 50`s,on the far side was a butchers shop. I have a memory also of an `Off Licence' and a `chippy'. What I am sure of is the opposite corner where I worked fo 3 years after school and on Saturdays. There was the Co-op grocery, the Greengrocery next door where a couple of High Pavement lads,(Chris and???) delivered on a Saturday and a chemist on the end.Next to this was the local G.P`s house. Hope this fills in a little more detail. I`m sure Dennis will remember more.
  6. Women's brains are different from men's – and here's scientific proof By Michael McCarthy Friday, 18 July 2008 . The differences in the circuitry that wires them up and the chemicals that transmit messages inside them are so great as to point to the conclusion that there is not just one kind of human brain, but two, according to recent neurological studies. Men may be from Mars and women may be from Venus, and since the American psychotherapist John Gray wrote his famous book, in 1922, on the idea, it has been a commonplace to think of men and women as being from different planets in t
  7. Sorry, know its slightly off track, but the last sentence has reminded me again of the gross stupidity of the Nottingham council in demolishing a magnificent Victorian building surrounded by acres of playing fields ,and a wonderful view of the Trent,i.e. Mundella (Grammar) School. What great leaders Notts .has!
  8. I imagine they(the Argies) would think it a good time to strike with Britain having virtually no military reserves.
  9. CHILEAN AIR FORCE Extra 300L (x5) Escuadrilla de Alta Acrobacia 'Halcones' Global Engagement F C-130H Grupo de Aviacion No 10 Global Engagement SP You may soon be needing these boys to help you and the old Vulcan! 10. > A man died and went to Heaven. As he stood in front of the Pearly > Gates, > he saw a huge wall of clocks behind him. > > He asked, "What are all those clocks?" > > St. Peter answered, "Those are Lie-Clocks. Everyone on earth has a > Lie-Clock. Every time you lie the hands on your clock move." > > "Oh", said the man. "Whose clock is that?" > > "That's Mother Teresa's", replied St. Peter. "The hands have never > moved, > indicating that she never told a lie." > > "Incredible", said the man. "And whose clock is that one?" >
  11. Ah well, not for much longer ,Bip you soon will not be able to afford to drive your car even if you could find space! However, Treasury figures slipped out in a parliamentary answer show that of the 21.9 million cars that will be on British roads by 2010/11, 43 per cent - or 9.4 million - will pay higher VED in real terms than they do now. Another 39 per cent - 8.4 million - will be left no better off. Just 18 per cent - 4.1 million - will actually benefit. Of the 9.4 million who will be worse off, 1.18 million motorists will be dragged into the highest two tax bands, where the annual cost
  12. It was probably a Carpetbagger,Mick. You should enlist Racine industries.! Racine Industries, the developers of the HOST® Dry Exaction Carpet Cleaning System, offers customers, homeowners, schools and businesses a fast, effective service. The corrupt activities of some made the term carpetbagger synonymous with any outsider who meddles in an area's affairs for his own benefit
  13. I read some time ago that Crowe`s film will show our man in tights(Robin) as the baddy, and the Sh. of N as the goody! SOUTH Sydney Rabbitohs owner Russell Crowe is about to burrow into one of London's poshest suburbs. The Oscar winning actor, who splits his time between a farm near Coffs Harbour and a Woolloomooloo apartment, will reportedly shell out £20,000 ($42,000) a month to rent a massive Mayfair home while he films a new movie about Robin Hood - a character renowned for robbing from the rich. "Russell is coming over to Britain filming and wanted somewhere comfortable for his family,

  15. I agree ,Beefy. But I do miss the beggars and their dogs, the vomiting drunks, and the `Big Issue ' sellers. I wonder if the locals meet their future partners by the left lion?
  16. I realise Nottingham is short of a few patrol police persons (or whatever they are known as today) but this chap sayshe will come if I help him find his pants!
  17. Well people on a recent tour around the South Pacific, I discovered where the design of Nottingham`s Council House came from!
  18. Dunno about you lot,but where I lived, all the ladies, regardless of how much they spent over a certain figure in the 50`s and 60`s seemed to get the same amount! What I did notice was the poor quality of their own products compared with the `named 'brands,(e.g Stork with the CWS concrete blocks etc!). Does the Co-Op still exist in the UK?
  19. I don`t think its bleached ,Den. At aged 5,I would ride pillion on my mate Johny Hardy`s bike (he was also 5!) down to a shed at the rear of a shop on Handel st. off Bath st.,where a group of old codgers had this huge foul smelling vat of animal entrails boiling away.No bleach was used in the process! I think they supplied most of the tripe in Nottingham. John`s uncle was the boss there. Opposite there used to be a pub,(think it was called the `Tripe to Jerusalem`!!!).
  20. A stunning senior moment Apparently, a self-important college freshman attending a recent football game took it upon himself to explain to a senior citizen sitting next to him why it was impossible for the older generation to understand his generation. 'You grew up in a different world, actually an almost primitive one', the student said, loud enough for many of those nearby to hear. 'The young people of today grew up with television, jet planes, space travel, man walking on the moon. Our space probes have visited Mars. We have nuclear energy, ships and electric and hydrogen cars, cel
  21. To Ann`s Family and friends Old Age, I decided, is a gift I am now, probably for the first time in my life, the person I have always wanted to be. Oh, not my body! I sometime despair over my body, the wrinkles, the baggy eyes, and the sagging butt. And often I am taken aback by that old person that lives in my mirror (who looks like my mother!), but I don't agonize over those things for long. I would never trade my amazing friends, my wonderful life, my loving family for less gray hair or a flatter belly.. As I've aged, I've become more kind to myself, and less critical of m
  22. I realise there are many ways of spelling Alseybrook (Aulsebrook(e) ) but I wondered if you were related in any way to the people that owned the bakery at the bottom of Blue Bell Hill in the 40s and 50s ?
  23. I did, Ayup, and still got the scars to prove it! Do you have any photos of the place?
