  1. I've always been clean shaven. I look like a vagrant after a couple of days of not shaving.
  2. IIRC Birkin Avenue actually started near the Clock pub, not at the bottom of Gregory Boulevard going up parallel to Radford Road.
  3. Catfan My grandmother lived at 118 Birkin Avenue up till the point the houses were demolished. She lived there from the early 1930s (or late 1920s) until late into the 1980s. I recall the strong sense of community then. I have never forgotten it.
  4. I will attest to US police being polite and understanding far beyond our UK police. I was in Boston, and as is my usual practice when I am affected by time differences, I went for a walk. This was late at night, possibly after midnight. I left the hotel and immediately outside of the hotel door was a man wearing a leather jock strap and covered in foam, and nothing else. Perhaps understandably I found this difficult to comprehend, and when I was invited to join the party (a splash and dance party - I dont know what it is and I dont wanna know) I freaked out. Within seconds I was surrounded
  5. Normal blood pressure depends on age, but anything higher than 140 is not good. If the bottom number is high, that is probably more damaging than the top number. A diastolic (thats the lower number) above 85 can be really risky. Giving up fags is important, but equally so would be to limit salt intake.
  6. Politeness costs nothing and generally gets far more out of people than rudeness or aggression. If politeness wasn't useful you wouldnt have McDonald's or any other successful company having a script for customers. Politeness is useful for everyone else too.
  7. I have known it was there for many years. Apart from the almost myth of Robin Hood, Nottingham does seem to underrate its historical importance. Charles I didnt choose Nottingham to raise the standard by accident. It was strategically important at the time. The battles between the Cromwellians and the Royalists in Nottingham are very interesting indeed.
  8. Ive been looking at the section of the forum about areas of Nottingham. Could I request that Hyson Green is added to it? Either as part of the Radford section or one of its own? Hyson Green was where I grew up so anything to do with Hyson Green is appreciated.
  9. Is the old Redmayne and Todd building a Watson Fothergill design or just very similar?
  10. Stan I was in BAOR too. There is a serious point to be made with my post, in that the calculations of the program are accurate. If you really want to know what the effect of a nuclear strike anywhere in UK would be, that is the tool to use. Its an adapted copy of the classified program actually used by government to calculate the effects of such a strike.
  11. Cliff Ton Again you are the map genius. I will have a look and print a few out for my mrs who is Russian. I speak a little Russian too so it will be entertaining for me to work out the Russian words for streets I know so well
  12. A bit of fun but it has its serious side. This is an actual nuclear weapon destructive capability computer program. http://nuclearsecrecy.com/nukemap/ I just nuked Worksop.
  13. Not just Gerald Wiley but at least half a dozen others. He also revised scripts from Spike Milligan (probably because they were a little too odd) and always credited Milligan with the entire script. Do you remember The Phantom Rasperry Blower of Old London Town? Makes me cry laughing even now.
  14. Probably because he was contracted to David Frost at the time and Frost knew about it.
  15. I didnt know the Scots Greys were there prior to Waterloo! The Scots Greys were the subject of a fascinating and stirring painting. (although from the perspective the greys were on a collision course with each other, but like Tennyson's poems, it has to be taken in historical context)
  16. IIRC 17/21 Lancers also had a TA unit there.
  17. I still use that phrase "Its looking black over Bill's Mother's" (Mother NOT pronounced muther... but Mother!) No one has a clue what I'm talking about but thats fine with me. Notts TV will be a good thing. I wont be able to see it but I wish I could. There must be an internet feed available somehow.
  18. If it still grows leaves every spring then let it live.
  19. Standard cartography. I cannot recognise if that is OS but the font on "Hungerhill Gardens" seems to suggest so. OS was and remains, the most accurate survey going. They were government funded but got resources from Church of England, Land Registry and all sorts. They had to make accurate maps to define land boundaries. One of the main influences was the Land Registration Act 1925.
  20. Yes I recall the Western Club - large snooker hall on the top floor. My dad took me there to play snooker back in the mid 70s.
  21. Being at Mundella, the ten to four bus from Trent Bridge meant that you had to run to get it! It always ran on time. I recall those green buses with great affection. The ones with the platform on the back were my favourite.
