  1. I just finished watching for the umpteenth time Batman the Movie (holy special edition) on CD "some day's you just can't get rid of a bomb" all designed by Admiral Shmidlap aka the Penguin Great stuff YO HO HO Rog
  2. Old English, thats the other flavour I was thinking of, thanks for that Ian, can you remember Sweet Peanuts? a sort of peanut shell shaped sweet with crushed nuts inside very sweet but the crushed nuts had a hint of salt I think Rog
  3. currently reading "Bomb Alley" by David Yates, a rating aboard HMS Antrim during the Falklands war Rog
  4. Remember Spangles? I think whoever made them made something similar shaped but tasting of peppermint Rog
  5. Ayup Mick, His name was Slavomir Rowicz, not sure of correct spelling Rog
  6. Hi Mariag, Yes I've read this book, met the man himself a few years ago when he gave me a copy, he (Slav) signed it for me and wrote "to value the freedom we have," very nice bloke, very quiet, he lived in Stapleford Nottingham but unfortunately died about five years ago, after his "Long Walk" he eventually joined the British army in India, I also think some big film company bought the rites to the book with a view to making a film Rog
  7. Now the press have got hold of this story about the silly old break dancing duffer I think the authorities will be on to him but in his defense he has performed no different to a shed load of MP's Playing the system for what he can get. just a thought Rog
  8. Break dancing? I thought he was having a fit, claiming disability allowance and a mobility car because he can't get about much he said on the news last night, he said he doesn't use his legs much in his "act", I don't think he uses his brain much either, a bloody wrinkly thrashing about on the floor like a worm on a hot tin plate? no wonder the rest of the world is laughing at us. the only talent I can see is that on the part of the show organisers for hypnotising the population into watching this tripe, they made a good job of that Rog
  9. Just for info, The reds flew low over my house yesterday teatime on their way back to Scampton, dint even know they were back in the UK!! Rog
  10. I'll post it now, looking up the incline, notice the two guards vans at the bottom and less track more greenery hope you enjoy them Pete Rog If you want me to send them to you for your files let me know
  11. Ayup firbeck, Pete I took this pic yesterday and tried to get in the same area as your picture in post 115 of your pals at the bottom of the incline (Cromford) so you can compare a "then and now". I have another pic looking up the incline from roughly the same spot as your other pic, I will post after me dinner Rog
  12. Hi Chrissy, I work about a mile and a half past the memorial and I always have a look when I drive past, I know the little cafe you stopped at and I agree, very nice, did you walk up the road behind you to the Petwood? if not I'm sure all the aviation crew will recommend it for a coffee, sit in the Dambuster bar and look at some of the stuff in there, in fact have a look on the aviaton day thread on this site there some pics on there, glad you enjoyed that part of the world though Cheers Rog
  13. No insider info on the Lanc I'm afraid, but looking forward to it coming home. By the way, don't forget it's the anniversary of the Dams raid this weekend, About midnight on May 16 / 17. I'm sure there will be some ceremony in Woodhall Spa at the Memorial, I will try to get some pics of the memorial with the wreaths etc on Monday if I get time Rog
  14. Sally B at last years Duxford autumn airshow, picture taken from about the same place as your picture firbeck but minus the port outer, I do have a picture of that side of the plane but the logo on the side is of the Memphis Belle and in that one you can see the empty engine housing. I also have some more pictures of American warbirds that Rob the oracle sent me, I will ask him if I can post them on this site, very good pics they are and I'm sure he won't object Rog
  15. We seem to have strayed a bit from the original thread of steam which I don't mind as I like any sort of railway so here's a pic I took on the Cromford/High Peak, it's a narrow gauge Ruston and Hornsby diesel ex quarry loco now giving punters a ride to Middleton top from Blackrock at a couple of quid a throw Rog
  16. Ayup Pete, Didn't go hostelling myself but what a fantastic program shown by BBC4, as of late we have been doing a lot of walking in the peaks and it's heart warming to see so many young folk with all their walking gear on festooned with map reading equipment and rucksacks doing the same stuff that was shown on the telly last night and these youngsters are so polite, a credit to them and the organisation Rog
  17. This is the pic taken from about where the bridge is in firbecks picture looking down the incline, notice the water tank on the right on a structure made from sleepers, you can just see the top of the tank in firbecks pic on the left above the rail trucks, and notice the two midland rail guards vans at the bottom, the buildings are still there and are now a small museum and a bit of a gift shop/teashop Don't forget to collate all this stuff Pete and get it published, I'll buy a copy and I'm a tight sod Rog
  18. Great pics firbeck, the place hasn't changed that much either, I do have a picture taken from the A6 bridge looking down the line which I will post so that other members can see little change. at the top of the incline was a narrow gauge quarry railway with a small Ruston and Hornsby diesel loco and the quarry railway running up to Middleton top Rog
  19. Is that the Lincoln ridge in the background? How can you change a dogs name after more than sixty years, not content with taking our country off us the PC wasters now want to take our history re the Lanc in the picture, wheres the hanger gear for "Upkeep" the bouncing bomb? By the way our BBMF Lanc is stuck in Holland at the moment with a knackered engine, the Luftwaffe are flying a replacement over from Coningsby, bit ironic eh? Rog
  20. Blackrock to Middleton top, the beam engine is still in place at Middleton top but only runs on compressed air now, the boilers are still set in the wall at the side of the engine house, all well worth a visit, further down the line at Cromford the Leawood pump is still in steam, this thing brings water from the Derwent about 50 ft below to replenish the canal, 800galls of water at a stroke, nearly 4 tons and only working on about 45 psi, steam provided by two midland railway boilers, I have a few more pics of my travels if anyone interested
  21. Interesting level marker, Midland railways, steam era Rog
  22. OK, I hope I don't bore anyone but: this is a photo of the remains of a 500Kg German WW2 bomb which failed to go off on the day it was dropped at RAF Woodhall Spa sometime after 1943. The front of the bomb was removed by the disposal squad in 2006 after it was dug up from our quarry (formally RAF Woodhall Spa home of 617 sqdn Dambusters) the sizes are: Overall Length 5'10-1/2 inches Length of body: 3'6-1/8inches Diam. of body: 15-1/2 inches Thickness of wall: 1-5/8 inches material of wall: steel construction of body: cast steel in one piece Length of tail: 2' 2'' width of tail: 15''
  23. Hi malbw and a warm welcome to this great site, nice piece of Nottingham history you have there, try getting in touch with the Industrial museum at Wollaton hall, they have all sorts of lace machinery and tools of the time, keep us informed if you find owt out Rog
  24. I've only posted this because I think there's no better sight than a swan flying, Rog
  25. firbeck, You need to collate all your pics and publish them in a book, There's a company called "Reflections of a Bygone age" they are based in keyworth Notts and an average price for their small booklets is £3.50 might be worth a try, plenty of rail enthusiast out there mate. Fynger and Taxi Ray, brilliant pictures thanks for posting Rog
