  1. Ayup Beefsteak, Just a small point, Hedge sparrow = Dunnock, prunella modularis. House sparrow = passer domesticus Tree sparrow = passer montonus For some reason people have always called the Dunnock a sparrow when really it's an Accentor, different species, For those that are interested though, compared to the house sparrow the tree sparrow has a smaller black bib and black ear coverts. I agree with you on the reason for their decline, most of their traditional nest site have been destroyed by pulling up the hedge rows and small bushes, however they will readily nest in home made nest b
  2. Ayup all you great people of Nottingham, Can anyone tell me where the saying "It looks a bit black over Bill's Mother's" comes from? I now live in Lincolnshire and often come out with the phrase but these hay seeds out here ent a clue what I'm refering to Cheers Rog

  4. Ayup Jessie, I remember that house it was on the right side of the road and just before the brooke as you were coming from Nottingham, I don't have any pics of it but I can remember it being flooded in the early 60s. the cycle track was the only bit that was'nt covered with water, Cheers Rog
  5. Ayup all, Them old trolly buses had a smell of their own, sort of disinfectant smell but stronger, always felt sick on a Saturday going from Trent bridge to Bulwell market on one of them Rog

Ayup Ian, Thanks for that I could do with a new one as I lost one of the locking rings from mine, News for today: greylags are coming to the quarry in their dozens, looks like they're ready to migrate, a bit early but perhaps sick of the weather.   7. Ayup Beefsteak, I may be wrong but is your computer defaulting to BLOODY when writing your post's? I understand what you're saying though, not very often I watch the idiot box but when I do the programs either been cancelled as you say or been put on at a different time so I've already missed it.   8. Ayup Beefsteak, Don't know if you've seen that bird club web site lately, but a yellow nosed Albatross has been reported somewhere in Lincolnshire, by the way the Motagu's Harriers produced 3 young and all have fledged, hoping to get to Digby this weekend to see them. Rog

  10. Ayup Beefsteak, Not a bad day at work today, 2 Curlew, 1 Bewick swan, 2 Buzzard, 4 kestrel and the usual duck population, I am currently looking at a Tawny owl out of my bedroom window just across a recently ploughed field Rog

Ayup Beefsteak, Yes thats the one, top side of Boston and Frampton marshes is just south of Boston, Frieston has recently been landscaped and nice lagoons set up, nice comfortable hide and friendly people "who are sympathetic to our harmless and environmentally friendly passtime" Just finished my weekly lagoon inspections at work and found Shelduck,oystercatcher,green sandpiper and a Bewick swan, so combining pleasure with work, hows that? Rog

Ayup Beefsteak, Off to Frieston shore and Frampton marshes tomorrow PM after work to see Avocets, Short eared owls, Spotted sandpipers and Little Egrets, might call in at Digby fen again to see Monty's if time permits. At work we've got 12 common Buzzards, Tree creepers, Nuhatch, Tawny owls, etc altogether 78 different species, and thats just our site, Weather looks good for weekend so I wish you well and hope you knock a few off your tick list Rog

  17. Ayup Beefsteak, Just got back from a trip around Swinderby airfield 20.30hrs Monday 2nd July. saw two magnificent buzzards one very pale colour perched 30mtrs in front of me, no camera though. I like your pics of the buzzard, typical shape of this very proud raptor,Monty's harrier still showing well at Digby fen last evening as I drove past,,,,,slowly. sorry to all the other site members for going on about birdlife, and I know it's not Nottinghamshire but if Beefsteak wants to see these birds it's worth a post to give him the chance to see one. Ayup Beefsteak, A well earned day off work started by taking the betterhalf to the Asda in Hykeham, then sat in my back garden and watched some of the Waddington airshow until the rain came, so took off to Digby Fen to see a Montagu's Harrier ( rare bird of prey) came home to sausage and tomatoes and a bread roll, hot bath and switched on my computer, pure heaven Cheers Rog

  21. Ayup BIP, Yep Castrol R40 oil is a vegetable oil from the castor bean, It don't like the cold weather and it don't mix with mineral oils, they use it in high performance engine because it keeps its viscosity at high temperatures, mixes freely with petrol or alcahol ( not harvest pale) Rog

  24. Ayup all, Just to get back to the smells bit, Does anyone remember the particular smell about half way up Drury Hill in the 50s-60s? smelt a bit like cobblers glue but more pungent, just another one of those things you remember from youre childhood Rog
  25. Ayup all, I was at the last airshow at RAF Binbrook, rained most of the day and visibility was dreadful, but I refused to go home until I saw the Lightening flypast. By the way there's a lightening parked up behind RAF Conningsby,, well worth a look if you're interested Rog
