  1. Thanks for that Stu, I remember it having a globe filled with water the rest of the info is lost in the mists of time but every now and again threads like this jog the old grey cells, when i visited that little cottage (must have been late 70s early 80s) the frame was in the upstairs bedroom and there was an elderly guy that could actually operate the thing, at the time the society was looking for a volunteer to learn the operation ready when the old fellow could no longer manage the job, I did think about it at the time, now I wish I had learned the frame, it's great to pass on knowledge. D
  2. Germans as described by Beefy, as you can see they aren't all in South Africa, these guy's were from the German district of Lancashire. Great day though and they were good sports (don't mention the war!!) Rog
  3. And visitors would be right in thinking that, I just feel very sorry for those folk that do try hard to make their properties nice and respectable only to have them spoiled by the few that dont give a damn. To get back to the framework knitters houses/cottages, those at Calverton usually had a frame in the bedroom close by the window that faced the sun for most of the day, the sun shone on a glass globe filled with water to act as a kind of magnifying glass to illuminate the work area, later on a knitting frame was put in a kind of outhouse towards the bottom of the garden or yard thereby fre
  4. Thats just what i thought PB Rog
  5. Have these eruptions now finished? only there's no mention of them on the news anymore, the reason I'm asking is because I've looked out of the window and there are no aircraft or contrails in the sky, the sky is hardly ever without any, there were a few yesterday at the airshow but as yet nothing apart from the departing military stuff from Waddo, don't remember seeing anything on the news that's more interesting than the ash cloud at the moment, perhaps it's because the wind has changed direction and it no longer concerns us in the UK but what about the poor souls that it is affecting or don
  6. Spent yesterday with Beefsteak at RAF Waddington air show, brilliant weather, flying and of course company (thanks Ian) great flying display by all, shame the BBMF couldn't make it although I see them most days there's something special about an air show when they are there. There is now talk of a Lincolnshire aviation day sometime in September for those interested, no doubt Beefy will have more details nearer the time Rog
  7. There is or was some archive stuff about the framework knitters of Calverton held I think by the Nottingham civic society, there is also the stocking frame museum at Ruddington perhaps one of those might be able to help Rog
  8. Very interesting post you've started there Stu, makes you want to go out and explore for yourself, have you heard anything about the finds from the A46 widening scheme thats going on at the moment? I was told from a contact in the construction industry that the historians are going to have to re-write the history books concerning the Romans in Nottinghamshire there have been that many finds in the A46/A52 area Rog
  9. Hi Stu, Nice pictures, had a walk alongside the river there myself the week of the beer festival, first time I'd walked over the lock bridge, Newark is full of history if you know where to look, if ever things get a bit boring at home of a weekend we usually nip down the road to Newark for a walk round and more often than not we see something new to us, well worth visiting Rog
  10. Ayup Ian, How many Notts folk are about to descend on Lincolnshire and do we have a start time? Rog
  11. Excellent pictures Ian, at last you got your raptor pics, beautiful birds though Rog
  12. Nice pictures there Ian, Tom Sopwith always claimed to have seen everything "aviation" by that he meant the first flight and the birth of aircraft through the jet age and the speed of sound to an aircraft flying backwards (the Harrier), I have his obituary here from the Daily telegraph plus a potted history of the great mans life Rog ps: why Kent? or is it a case of what Sid Larkin would say "Perfick"
  13. Have a happy Birthday Lynmee me duck Rog
  14. Very similar to the aircraft tracking but international shipping, worth a look around the UK just to see how much we depend on import/export, The site's called Vessel Tracker, pick up on Ports and drag the mouse pointer around the shipping lanes Rog
  15. Good link there Phil, will get out on me bike now and look for some photo opportunities around here (Lincolnshire) I know most of the old branch line stations are still standing although now converted to houses but accessible from the road side Plenty of railway pics to go through now Rog
  16. Sorry to keep this off topic Ashley but for those interested Cetshwayo's (Zulu King) shield and asaghi (spear) are part of the Sherwood Forresters collection in Nottingham castle, he was bought back to the Uk and paraded with dignity in front of Queen Victoria Rog Back to Ashley's original topic
  17. Not a fan then mb101? I do agree though, they have all but shut down the corner shop and small outlets, practically crippled the farmers by screwing them down on price, (milk being the worse) and by closing down the small business you are left with little choice but to use them, on the other hand though do you think that prices would be much higher at the "corner shop" without the super markets? Rog
  18. one Kev, It's about time Nottingham started to exploit the villain in green, this time it sound like it could be more of a success than the Tales of Robin Hood, hope so Rog
  19. Has anyone heard from Pete (firbeck)? I know he was having trouble with his computer and also his Mother was having some health issues (hope she's ok) I know some of you have been in touch with him in the past via telephone and was just wondering if he was alright, Pete if you can see this post I hope you get back on line soon and start up some more of your transport posts Cheers Rog
  20. Ashley, this is a very interesting post, unfortunately I can't add to it but I do remember most of the roads you mention, My aunt and uncle lived on Egypt road for many years, the company I work for has a concrete works near the gas holders and I think the scrap yard is still near the bridge, does anyone have a map of the era you talk of or is anything available from the book shop under the council house in the city? it would be good to piece all this info together to see how that part of the city developed. Rog just as a matter of interest, you spoke of the Zulu war of 1879, one of the offi
  21. As said, go through Metheringham from the A15 over the rail crossing, about 1.5miles turn left to Martin opposite RAF Metheringham site, across Martin fen to the end, over Kirkstead bridge to Woodhall Spa, turn left for the Petwood or right for Thorpe camp or carry on passed Thorpe camp to the "T" junction turn left then first right to RAF Coningsby Rog
  22. Ayup Ian, just a quick one, Rose is running in the "Race for Life" tomorrow (Sunday) only a 10 k but,,,,wait for it,,,, It's held at RAF Waddington down the main runway, so I might just get some pictures other than the race, if you know what i mean? Rog
  23. Save the Bygones for me please Ian, BTW don't forget that Thorpe camp is open on Wednesdays, as you know well worth the visit, Abbey Lodge on the way to Woodhall has some pics of AWACS all over the place (don't know why yet) and there's the Leagate inn near Coningsby camp (before you get to New York) they have some aviation stuff in but don't know what Rog
