  1. My older brother went out with a girl from Bulwell called Bradshaw in the late 60's, seem to remember mum saying she was from a well off family there. Maybe the same ?
  2. Been away from the pc for a while and missed my daily visits to Nottstalgia! I grew up in Nottm and spent the first 39 years of my life there, my kids were all born there, I'm an ozzy now, but will always have a spot in my heart for my home town, hence why I visit this site. One of my daughters is currently in the uk and has spent 2 weeks in Nottm and loved it ! albeit she left there 25 years ago. Don't think I could live full time there again, the cold would kill me ! but love to visit even though things are changing and not for the best in some cases. There are worse places in the UK to
  3. Beardsley's was the one I was thinking about. They used to have a depot in Netherfield but moved down to Colwick I think.
  4. I suppose its the "pussy footed" council, pandering over duty of care to her children more than anything else, its scandalous but happens and not just in the uk. Here they pay single "mothers" to have kids instead of making them get a job ! and call it a baby bonus ! I have heard stories of single young girls, having a baby to allow them to buy a car with the bonus.
  5. I totally agree, very bad manners and I can't abide it. When we visited a couple of our grand daughters in the uk, an 18 and 16 year old, I took offence, as they seemed more interested in the bloody mobiles, either texting or answering one, while we, the grand parents had travelled for 3 hours from Nottm to Bexhill on sea, just to see them ! When I explained to the older one, she switched it off for around 15 mins, then in a panic had to put it back on as in her words "she might miss a text, which may have been important !" My other pet hate is dodging the texters on any city street who are
  6. My dads favourite was Yorkshire pudding spread with strawberry jam, he used to have it after his Sunday lunch and save some to take to work next day cold ! As for pancakes, we are currently in Victoria Australia on the NSW border, and there is a tourist thing here called the "Big Strawberry" Went in the other day and had pancakes with home made strawberry syrup and home made Gelato (Ice cream) absolutely yumma. They grow their own fruit and serve it in many different ways including strawberries dipped in milk chocalate on a stick like a sweet toothed kebab ! My sort of establishment !
  7. My mum used to make Rasberry vinegar as she grew loads of rasberrys. It was wonderful for sore throats and that horrible scratchy tight cough, my kids grew up on it as I did.
  8. I was a regular at the Bier Keller, knew Pete Hubbard and Trevor very well, was a great night out and there was very rarely any trouble, later on, I worked the door for a while with my wife's brother Roy and Trevor. On the occasional time there was any rumpus it was usually a visiting group who were "stretching their legs" in another town, so to speak. I was a long term member of the Shtotokan karate club in Nottm and we had a regular Thursday night booking at one of the front side tables. Our chief instructor, Mr Shiro Asano would occasionally accompany us too after training, where he woul
  9. From my mum and dads house, on the Arnold side of Mapperley we could see the Hucknall aerodrome, and often watched the Vulcan bomber land and take off during its tests there. Also we could hear the RR engines being tested. Could also see Crich stand in Derbyshire and at night it used to flash, then after they built the M1 we could see the car headlights going North and South. I used to spend hours with binoculars looking out the rear french windows. Was a sad day when mum died that I sold the old house with its wonderful views.
  10. I think the issue is not that kids are allowed in, its the lack of parental control while doing so. Too many young parents nowadays just leave the kids to their own resources while they chat and consume alcohol. I personally love flying home to Perth W australia (I travel full time in oz) to see my kids and grandkids and we normally go to a restaurant for a family gathering at tea time, usually around 17 of us and growing ! But my kids and their kids have been brought up the old fashioned way and are not allowed to run around or cause disruption to others. Taking scooters to a pub/restaura
  11. After the hell I've been through in the last 10 years, I never go anywhere outdoors without a hat and sunscreen on my nose and ears. As my specialist plastic surgeon says we can generally cut bits off here and there, but ears and noses are a different thing altogether. I had a small cancer removed last year from the bridge of my nose and it is very disfiguring, also my sunglasses now fall down all the time ! ;-) On a lighter note the ozzy's are world leaders in research into this deadly phenomenon and the general consensus is it is the rising levels of uv (A or B I cannot remember which) th
  12. Thats the big problem, I think we all feel and look better with a bit of a tan and some sun is essential for good health etc.but to lie on a sunbed or deliberately lie out in it makes me cringe now. We can always tell the european holiday makers here, they lie around in it or walk around shirtless to show off where they have been when they return home ! Nothing changes I suppose as we did it too but are now living with the consequences.
  13. SeanF Yes lots of characters at the pit in those days ! I think Gedling colliery was one of the biggest employers in the area at the time. I was an electrician just come out of my apprenticeship but wages were poor then, so I had a contact there who got me the job as an underground sparky. Our charge hand was Reg Bennet (a well known Identity in the area) his son Terry Bennet used to be in a band. My wifes dad worked there, and a couple of my neighbours too. Was a very good camaraderie underground where everyone looked out for everyone else. Also used to love the miners welfare club on M
  14. As a married couple we were lucky enough to go to Spain a fair bit for our holidays, leave the uk all white and pasty, hit the poolside area or the beach and be like a lobster in a few days ! We used to accept the burning and peeling skin as a right of passage that we had "been to the sun" ! I also scuba dived in the Med around Malta and the Islands and no wet suits needed in those areas in summer. Often got very burnt around back and shoulders and face. While I was diving my wife was sunning. In later years here in oz again I had a permanent tan on arms and legs, but then I suddenly became
  15. Lots of memories for me in this thread. My gran used to live just off St Annes well road, so I used to cycle down from Mapperley tops down donkey hill to get there, then on my way back would walk up donkey hill and call in an aunts in Thorneywood. My wife came from the miners estate on valley road so spent lots of time around the area there, the Rec come back vividly, as we did a fair bit of "courting" on there. :-) DavidW , your photo of the wedding day, I know your face very well so we must have crossed paths at some time. I went to Gedling school like you and lived on Mapperley tops so of
  16. Sounds silly now but my wife swore we had a ghost in our old house in Carlton, the house was only around 20 years old but she was certain she had seen a little boy standing on the landing several times. I always poo pooed the idea till one week end we had been out on the Saturday evening and yes we had had a couple of beers each, but no where near intoxicated as I was driving. My wife awoke in the night to visit the loo, and I heard her say "come on go back to bed will you" When she came back to bed from the loo, I asked her who she was talking to and she said "Oh it was only Paul out of
  17. Cannot remember their name but there was a truck company in Netherfield used to run sugar from the Newark and Colwick sugar beet factories. their name may have began with a "B" The trucks were painted blue and the ealry ones were all flat tray artics that had to be roped and tarped, they then went up to Tautliners, which had the box type back with sliding curtain side walls, much easier for the driver. An old neighbour drove for them for a while then he went to another local Gedling or Carlton outfit running bulk coal and coke around and a bit of brewery waste occasionally. I used to work a
  18. Had to smile on one of my frequent visits back to the uk. When I flew into Heathrow old buildings (not the new terminal) I approached the passport control and there was two queues, one for EU residents and one for aliens from other places. Of course the queue for aliens was 10 times longer as only 2 operators were manning it, whereas the EU queue had maybe 6-8 operators. When I finally reached the officer he looked me in the eye, then my Ubeaut aussie passport and asked me how long I was staying, when I said a month, in my lovely nottm accent, he asked me how I was going to support myself
  19. Used to love that spanish root, can you still get "Tiger Nuts" as I loved them too.
  20. There are quite a few "English Lolly shops" opening here in oz, yes they call em Lollies here :-) But they keep some real old style sweets, from Flying saucers, to bullseyes, sherbert lemons and many more. My daughters who were born in the uk, but grown up here, love to go there and buy bags of memories.
  21. My mum regularly had them in her back garden, in Woodthorpe up till she died in 2005, even had families of young one's she used to put food out for. Remember as a kid, finding one and my dad thought he was doing it a favour by trying to rid it of fleas with powder, but sadly it died.
  22. Carni As a 5 + year old I lived just off Mapperley tops and remember on Gretton Road (Opposite Westdale lane top) that there was 3 gas lamps down to Coronation road. I used to be afraid of the dark (well I was only 5 ! ) and used to run like hell between the gas lamps to get home on a winters evening. A man used to go round with a pole as per one of the previous photo's, and turn them on and off. That shop on the corner of Westdale was original but I can remember it being modernised to what it is now, my old work mate's wife runs the beauty parlour in it now, well she did 2 years ago.
  23. Hi Sheriden I left in 89 and have been back many times since but still manage to get lost now and again ! Big thing I noticed is lots of crowds and driving around can get very busy and slow at times but I still love going back and part of me still lives there, hence loving this forum.
  24. When we were there in 2011, we had done all the usual local haunts (well most anyway) and brother in law said I know a good day out. We ended up driving to Leicester, sounds silly, but we parked in the city center with his disabled pass (he has bad knees) and went around the big market there, then in the huge shopping center and had some lunch at a nice little cafe, then another walk about. On the way home we stopped at a country pub and had a lovely meal and a pint. It was not at all what I had been expecting and was pleasantly "different". My memories of Leicester were from working and ch
  25. I knew John Landon at school, also from a later period, Roger Lym from sons of Adam and Paddy Flint (not mentioned here) great guitarists. John Landons dad was what we called a "wide boy" never worked a real job but wheeled and dealed, bit like Del Boy. Also did a bit of "Band management" and from memory "stripper management" John always bragged he was going to do the same, as work was for mugs !
