  1. Digging around in a box in the garage came across this, caught in a flap of cardboard all on it's own. I know exactly where it is - Summers Street, but not sure of the date. That's Waterway Street at the far end, the junction with Annesley Street if I remember correctly. Any ideas as to when?
  2. More on the area around Traffic Street. Was this place on Queens Drive next to the Police Station? The Police Station was on the corner of Kirkwhite street and Queens Drive.
  3. "Daft as a brush" was common in Medders.
  4. All the Medders folks were famous. Me included. Don't know about those from the less well-off areas of Nottingham. I mean the Medders was the pinacle of style and elegance. Nobody could wear their wellies like we could.
  5. Lived on Summers Street from aged one to sixteen (1945-1960), first school was Queens Walk on the corner of Brierley Street, used to love the smell from the timber yard up Traffic Street. With me Dad working at the LMS shunting yards up on Wliford Road, we regularly walked up Traffic Street to meet him from work. The local map that displays on this thread actually shows our house. Queens Walk later became Welbeck Primary, but that was a long time after I left. If I remember correctly the school entrance on Brierley St was for littlies, and the entrance on KIngLake Street was for older kids.
  6. This may have been posted before, but if not, for those with an interest in 1950's radio this site is absolutely magic. http://www.turnipnet.com/whirligig/radio/index.htm Definitely recommend "Childrens Favourites" Hugs Alison
  7. Back then as a littlie, we had two Grans. Top Gran and bottom Gran, so named because we went up the street to get to top Gran who lived off St Annes Well Road, and bottom Gran who lived on Brierley Street, hence a walk down the street. Top Gran was the first to get a telly. The screen couldn't have been more than six inches across, but there was a large magnifying glass mounted in a stand that stood in front of the screen. When we got a telly used to dash home from school at lunch to watch Emergency Ward 10. Also remember Dixon of Dock Green - "evening all".
  8. Didn't have no Spit on a pole when I was there - Sept 1960 - Aug 1963. There I was, fresh out of the Medders, and off to some furreign country - Zumerset. Funny lot down there - miles to the nearest chippy.
  9. Would have been there circa 1955. Have distinct memories of being marched along the front in a howling gale, with waves beating over the railings along the beach side of the "Esplanade". Also remember the food was good, and plentiful, which was something for a kid from the Medders.
  10. Me sister might have known him. She's 68 this year and went to Deering. She was then Beryl Cook.
  11. T'was Christmas eve in the Medders The snow was raining fast A bare-footed man with clogs on Came slowly running passed He turned a straight crooked corner To see a dead donkey die He took out his pistol to stab it And it kicked him one right in the eye. Alison
  12. Mick2me, please do tell. The suspense is killing me. Alison
  13. Used to be a really good one on corner Summers Street/ArkwrightStreet in the Medders, but that was back fifty years. Only Mam and Dad had fish, us kids had chip butties. Two doorsteps thick with margarine, then lay scolding hot chips in a layer on one, add salt and malt vinegar, and then press the other slice on top and squash. Yummy. I can still taste them now. Alison
  14. Just been watching an episode of Foyle's war on the box, and it brought back memories of my much younger days in Nottingham. I have quite distinct memories of sitting on my uncle's shoulders watching the return of the Sherwood Foresters(?) from Germany. We were standing on the pavement, along with hundreds of others, at the top of Carrington Street, between Canal Street and Listergate. There were bombed buildings behind us, that were known as the Arms Houses, which had been fenced off. I would have been three or four perhaps, which would make it 1947-48ish, and the regiment were marching up
  15. Sincerest condolences from down under. Alison (Melbourne Australia)
  16. Ayupmeduck, I have this Optical Character Recognition Software from way back - a free trial that never timed out. <grin> It reads JPEG's into an RTF file. I use it quite often for reading in newspaper articles that I want to send to friends. I don't have the original package though, only an installed version. Hugs Alison
  17. I have a freebie application from way back that reads text from JPEGS into a word document. E-mail the Jpeg to me as an attachment Stan Hugs Alison
  18. Good stuff Frank. quoting: 2 industry professionals to inform the group that the proper term is "lamp" Whose next ? <giggles> Hugs Alison
  19. With you there Stan. When I saw Mundella in the process of being demolished in 1994, I was greatly saddened. In many countries it would have been considered a "heritage" building. I suppose the UK has so many similar building that some have to go. But it doesn't make it easy for those with fond memories. As you noted, the location for a school was absolutely brilliant. Surrounded by playing fields, close to the river, it wanted for nothing. Mind you I think it started going downhill when the Rev Calder passed on. He was a true scholar and gentleman. Alison
  20. .....to change a lightbulb? ;-) 1 to change the light bulb and to post that the light bulb has been changed 14 to share similar experiences of changing light bulbs and how the light bulb could have been changed differently 7 to caution about the dangers of changing light bulbs 1 to move it to the Lighting section 2 to argue then move it to the Electricals section 7 to point out spelling/grammar errors in posts about changing light bulbs 5 to flame the spell checkers 3 to correct spelling/grammar flames 6 to argue over whether it's "lightbulb"
  21. I get quite a sense of pride when I see "Boots" the chemist in all sorts of odd places around the world. Recently in Phuket Thailand for instance. There is a "Boots" just down from the Metropol Hotel in Phuket Town. I believe their main factory was in the Meadows, between Kinglake Street and Waterway Street, bounded on the East by Queens Bridge Road. I used to walk passed it everyday on the way to primary school on Queens Drive/Brierley Street. Alison
  22. For sale 1 Sydney Harbour Bridge 75th Anniversary Commemoration Hat. Used once - yesterday. Extremely popular item. It is believed that 250,000 people all chose to wear one - see photo below. The one for sale is shown below being worn by seller. Any offers accepted Hugs Alison
  23. Reminds me of a Mum complaining about her four year old daughter wandering around the house singing "me and my lover", until she realised it came from Playschool and should be "me and my Llama". Hugs Alison
  24. The BBC news website is warning it could happen again. See http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/6448525.stm All those nice new swishy places where the Meadows used to be. Do they still call it the Meadows? or is it something like "River Park Estate". Alison
