As I understand it the STAA was formed to look after three sets of inter connected allotments Hungerhill, Stonepit Coppice and Gorsey Close. One of the reasons given was that as a larger association they could get Lottery funding. Colin

The St Anne's gardens are still going strong and have a great and long history. They are the oldest and largest detached gardens in Britain and are now Grade 2 listed. They have a very good web site for those with an interest. Colin

Re Post #5. I was talking with a mate on Sunday and he was relating a tale about when the Post Office took a temporary lease on the building to the right of the picture. He told how he was wandering around one night and had come across a bridge over the Tinkers Leen that led form the front factory to a rear annex. Colin

Hi Cliff, just for the record it was the owner before Player who used it has a observation platform I believe. I have checked Google Street View and the cupola can be clearly seen of Woodborough Rd at the front and from The Crescent to the rear. I pass on a fairly regular basis so next time will stop and check. Colin

Hi Stu, You will most certainly have seen me in the Robin of a Friday night. Until Tony left it was every Friday night with the wife and every Sunday dinner with my mate. I don't think that is John Players old house. Fernliegh House was sold to John Player in 1896 for £4000 pounds, it is now the Nottingham Hospice. However I worked in the house in the mid 70s installing a new boiler and there is a very distinctive feature on that house. A large round glass cupola sited on the roof and accessed by a sprial staircase. If you look at todays photographs of the house it is still there and can be plainly seen form both the front and and rear elevations. Mother worked at Bairnswear on the junction of Nottingham Rd and Perry Rd as a smocker. I can remember very well going to see her at work on occasions in the 50s. One abiding memory is that the machinist's were in the same huge room and you couldn't hear yourself speak so all the women could lip read. They would carryout entire conversations with each other without a sound coming from their lips. I soon learnt that you never said anything out of place if mother could see your lips, a clip round your tab was a certainty. Colin

I have been giving this one some thought. From the early 70s onward I spent a lot of time at Proteus training camp and all over the surrounding area. If memory serves the AA box was on the right hand side of the Worksop Rd just above the roundabout. There was a greasy spoon style cafe there to with tables and chairs outside. I have this vague memory of sitting there in the summer drinking tea, smelling steam and listening to a train whistle. That is unless I am going barmy, I will ask next time I meet an old comrade. If memory serves the AA box was close to the Ollerton island on the 614. As to the Valley Rd site I never saw one near the 5 ways, but there was one at the junction of Hucknall Rd and Valley Rd. Behind the concrete mini police station that was. I still have it marked on my maps. On days that it was in steam children could go for rides free of charge. Colin
