  1. Just had a look at the link great pics thanks. I notice the gentleman who is producing the site asks a question about an outlet into the Trent between Meadow Lane locks and Lady Bay bridge. Following some posts on the Tinkers Leen elsewhere here I wonder if that could its outlet to the Trent its certainly in the right area and if anyone knows the chap would appreciate this info. Pic NW00184. Potty
  2. Snow in March well I never. Come on people it's not unusual to have snow in March. Colin
  3. Does anyone remember when The PDSA van used to park on the Muttons car park? One 1/2 day a week to look after peoples pets who could not afford to see a vet privately. You just had to give a donation in to the charity box. Colin
  4. Stu, thats another memory jogger. I remember now my mother telling me her father arrived back in Arnold by train after being injured during the Great War. Sadly he did not survive hence his war grave in Redhill cemetery. Colin
  5. Thanks for the pics Stu. Just reread your post about the rifle club on Ransom Rd. That was a long range open air range using the hill upto Woodborough as a back stop. Your second pic is I believe the old range wardens house situated on the right of Ransom Rd as you go up hill toward Woodborough Rd. The range was eventually closed after many complaints of near misses of coach and horses traversing Woodborough Rd. Colin
  6. What with the back boiler (could be copper or brass) the cylinder and your extras You might be buying the next round. Colin
  7. Stu I would think there is something in the George Akins story. He certainly owned the Roxy at the time it was demolished and also the small plating company next door. As to Daybrook House I am sure that in the seventies I went to a wedding reception in that area a right posh job behind the Roxy. Colin
  8. Mick if the pipes are old there is just a chance they could be 20 thread, look like screwed steel but made of copper. Give em a good scrape just to check. Used to know a man who made a lot of money when Vic center was built. He was the owner of the scrap yard on Hayden Rd, near Nottm Rd. He put a price for removing the scrap from a hotel on Milton St. He was the only one who realised the heating system had been installed in 20 thread. Colin
  9. Strip the brass fittings of the cylinder they go in seperately. A 36" high x 18" dia cylinder will fetch you about £50 on a good day. Separate all brass, copper, clean copper, lead, steel etc, that way you will get the best price for your metal. The price varies from day-to-day but its pretty stable at the moment because so many have stopped doing it due to the regs now in force. Check the rules about car insurance you could get stopped by the cops who will want to check it. You should be OK as you are not a trader. But as a for instance the guy I know who does it for a business has to have
  10. Mick you would be surprised. I know one guy who takes it all back to his house and sorts it. He clears a grand a week without really trying. Colin
  11. All new rules this year to try and prevent metal theft and tax evasion. No cash payouts allowed. As a private person you would need photo ID, proof of address and be paid by cheque. As a business/regular customer you have to have an account and the payments are made by BACS into that specific account. That plus CCTV recording has made a lot of the roving scrap men look elsewhere for money. Colin
  12. This thread has bought back some wonderful memories I have been in and around Daybrook and Arnold most of my life. In the early 1900s my mother lived in the terraced cottages that used to stand opposite Red Hill Rd somewhere near where the scout hut is now. Her father is buried in a war grave to the right fronf of the chapel at Red Hill cemetery and both her and my father are buried in the newer section. During the mid 70s I worked for Sturtons plumbers based on St Albans Rd and did a lot of work for Be-Ro and Daybrook laundry. Even fitted a new boiler at the Old Spot. As to indoor small bo
  13. Have you tried chitting your peas before planting. I followed the advice and touch wood have not had mouse trouble since. Colin
  14. For me it was a Portella (spelling) with a packet of crisps sat in the bowling alley of the Robin Hood in Lambley. Colin
  15. I am sure I remember going with my dad to a wood off George's Lane and him showing me what was supposed to be a roman wall. If you go down the lane from Dorket Head there was/is a sharp left hand bend followed by a steep hill. If you carried on at this bend down a dirt track it was about 1/2 a mile or so down there. Colin
  16. Plastic netting laid about 1 to 2 inches above the ground, cats won't walk on it usually. Colin
  17. Thanks Mick you and others like you have made a difference at Virgin and I for one have to say thanks. I had to deal with them just 3 weeks ago and whilst not easy when I got to the right person 'resolution manager' I got exactly what I asked for for less than I was paying before. Cheers medears Colin
  18. I am of the opinion that the DSR would apply as the telephone call should be followed up in writing. You also should have been given certain details over the phone before the contract becomes enforcible. You are then allowed a 7 day cooling off period during which you can cancel the contract. A quick google will give you lots of info. Colin
  19. Going to have to put you right there Mick. Not lock valve, but lock shield valve. The lock shield valve is fully adjustable and is used to control the amount of water flowing through the radiator, thus sharing out the available hot water to all radiators. The lock bit refers to the cap on the valve which is supposed to prevent tampering. When ever you need to turn a lock shield valve off count the number of turns required and always open it by using the same number of turns. Otherwise you may get one rad cold and one blazing hot. Colin
  20. Blimey thats brought back some memories. I was in the 14th bucket bashers Mansfield Rd baptist church in the early 60s we had band practice there on a Friday night. Jimmy the leading stick lived on Sturton St. We would then torment the local area with a Sunday morning parade once a month. Christine my first serious girlfriend lived on Leslie Rd her auntie owned the chippie across from the school on the corner of Stanley Rd very handy for chips after band practice. Great memories Thanks Colin
  21. Quite correct it was the X2 must have had a brain fart. Colin
  22. From 1963 onward Huntingdon Street was my launch pad to freedom. Every Friday night along with some mates rucksack on back I would catch the F2 Nottm to Manchester via the Derbyshire Dales. For the first couple of years we got off at Matlock and spent the weekend climbing & caving. Later we went further on up into Buxton following our sport. Thats where I met my wife to be so both the bus service and the station have fond memories for me. And yep were still married. I think you will find this is the service that was extended in the summer months to run from Liverpool right through to Sk
  23. I lived in Buxton in Derbyshire in the mid to late 60s, everyone was a serry. Colin
  24. I had trouble with one a couple of years ago, first I tried chicken wire laid over the ground with some success but the clincher was to lay green plastic bean support netting over the ground. Yes it was messy after the fox came a calling but after getting tangled in the mesh he/she never came back.
  25. Pure guess fox's digging in freshly disturbed earth for worms. Colin
