  1. Hello Mess, Living at Clifton the north of the city seemed like a foreign country to myself and my friends. It seems as if there was far more variety in the locos to be seen there, rather than the ones that trundled up and down the GC. Yes Grantham was an amazing place to visit in those far off halcyon days. It was the first mainline station that I managed to visit alone and it had a lasting impression on me that's never really gone away. I am putting together a blog about those days, you can see it at www.returntograntham.wordpress.com If you have any memories of your visits please do s
  2. Sorry, not a rhyme, but in my memory bank. "Time it was, and what a time it was..... A time of innocence, a time of confidences... Long ago it must be, I have a photograph, preserve your memories, they're all that's left you" Simon & Garfunkel
  3. Just been into our local Co-op tonight and I noticed that they have still got England flags for sale. As a light hearted joke, I mentioned to the Manager that they had been knocked out of the competition as a result of todays match. He doesn't know much about football and does not keep track with any of the games. He turned to one of the assistants and asked her to mark them down to half price tomorrow! The funny thing is he wasn't joking.... Smiffy
  4. I said to someone the other day "I'll be glad when it's all over".................... It is know ! Instead of (hopefully) going to the world cup every four years, it might be better to stay here and have a regional cup. The Midlands v The South, The North East v The North West etc etc. The Midlands could have players from all the local teams included ! Smiffy
  5. Very very sad for you Bilbraborn. Smiffy
  6. Hello Dat47, Can you PM me again as I think your inbox may be full? Smiffy
  7. Fascinating, I do (just) remember my parents living at my grandmother's three storey house for a time. My grandmother and grandfather lived on the ground floor, my mother and father (plus three children) the first floor and my aunt and uncle (no children) on the top floor. Not quite the Waltons, but It was a cosy arrangement and from what I do remember a fairly happy household. Everyone shared with shopping and small jobs around the house. This arrangement went on for about a year or so then my aunt and uncle moved to a new house (at Clifton). The vacated upper floor then became our advent
  8. Morning Cliff Ton, Although registered some time ago I have not been on this site for a while, some very good pictures of Nottingham and further afield. Thanks for posting the new one of Clifton, it's really nostalgic. We used to live on Colleymore Leys Lane, off to the right of the picture showing your house. I can remember at school it would take ages to write (and remember) my address ! I have just completed a bike ride (in my mind) around all of the streets in view, exhausted now as not an ice cream van in sight. Our local park has not been built yet and I can't nip to the shops on V
  9. Your post saddened me, as I know the feeling well and truly understand what you must be going through at the moment. I know it's little comfort at this time Bilbraborn, but you will get through it and look back to happy times you had. You are very lucky to have a true friend who has helped you through life during the good and bad times. It's a reminder to us all to appreciate life's little moments and try to get on with each other through those good and bad times that come to all of us. I can see that you have many friends on here Bilbraborn, not the quite same I know, but I am sure those
  10. An occasional haunt in the early 1970's, can't remember why?? Is this place still open, if not does anyone know when it closed? Smiffy
  11. Welcome to the Forum Karlton, this is a great site about Nottm, Notts and all other nice places in the world. Look forward to your posts. Smiffy
  12. I remember a good one in Clifton but cannot think of it's name. It was just off Farnborough Road, first turn left, (Orford Avenue?) as you come into Clifton from Nottingham. Two of my Aunt's worked there on a part time basis. Myself and some pals would occasionally get "freebies" on a Friday school lunch time break. Smiffy PS:- Is the Linga Longa still open in Skegness?
  13. Not sure how to put links on here so try and have a look at Carl Sagan's "Pale Blue Dot" I think there a few videos on You Tube. Smiffy
  14. Get a few with HMRC on them.... don't know what it means though?? Smiffy

  16. Are moles girlfriends called molasses? Smiffy
  17. Thanks for the explanation everyone. Why do some even have the line "Warning Points" shown on their little icon on the left hand side, even if they are all 0 (such as myself) but others do not even have a reference to the number of points? Sorry about this, just curious... :-) Smiffy PS: What is the nicely coloured (Corporation Green?) Reputation score?
  18. Hello nalasekuj and welcome to the forum. Some of those names you mention I think are familiar to me?? Do you know if they went to Fairham and if so which house they were in? Smiffy
  19. Another chap I remember was Noel Ingram. I remember him having a shop in Keyworth called "Paperchase" (I think). I met him quite a few times and he gave me some copies of his railway colour slides. Most of these were taken up and down the line south of Grantham, but also the iron stone lines to the south west. Noel also gave me a cassette recording of a trip he made from Nottingham Vic to Loughborough a few years before the line closed. On the same tape are recordings he made during the same period but made from the lineside near East Leake. The weather apparently was terrible with blizz
  20. Nothing that worries me in particular, but I wonder if someone can tell me what warning points are? Clicking through various areas of the Forum (it's always best to look first!) I could not see anything obvious about them. I have noticed that the number is not always shown on some profiles and does not seem to be related to the number of posts or status of the member. Example:- My own shows 0 Warning Points (big sigh of relief on that!) Just interested to know... Thanks Smiffy
  21. A gentleman called T.G. Hepburn was also an avid photographer in and around the Nottingham area, His pictures show up now and again in some of the railway magazines and books etc. I think his whole collection is now owned by a company called Rail Archive Stephenson? Smiffy
  22. What are dreams? A story I heard once concerned a lady who often dreamed of visiting a small white house. She would approach the front door via a long stone path and, because the door was always open, go inside. To her this did not in seem an unusual thing to do and the thought that she was entering without being asked did not cause concern. Roaming around each room she was always careful not to touch anything. Going upstairs she would look through the window over a well kept garden to the rear. In the garden a couple were sat on a bench. One of them, with his back to her, was reading a
