  2. ah yes Trinity sq,lovely old church and Graveyard,surrounded by the buses,6,17,18,28,.and all the little shops,mechanics picture house opposite victoria station which was next door to marsdens restuarant. what was wrong with all that?//and all next to Foreman st newspaper offices,london Herbalist,a pub,cant remember its name,empire cafe and the peach tree pub,saw a few stars of the day in there,David whitfield,mike Winters and the footballer flip Le Flem. it was all ok,happy days.
  3. all shoplifters dont stand out,ie young,drunk,chavvy,i caught a chap in kegworth a few years ago,he had pulled up in a jag,he was about 40 and very smart wearing a nice crombie and gucci shoes,in was when goods had price tickets on, i watched him take the ticket off a 2.99 bottle of cheap plonk and put it on a bottle of jacobs creek 7.99.he paid the 2.99 and left the store,when i nicked him he was most indignant. turned out his girlfriend loved jacobs creek, oh yes and he had over £300 in his wallet,loved catching his sort.

  5. i was always crap at woodwork and in 1958 at padstow school we were alll tasked to make rattle,i managed to put the ratchet on back to front and it wouldnt spin.the teacher mr england was a big nasty sod and he decided to show the class what a t... i was,he placed it in a vice and proceeded to smash it to bits.i felt like crying,but being hard i held it back being left handed didnt help,thats my excuse anyway.

Nottingham has a fine boxing history,from Bendigo,Reg king,Wally Swift,Johnie Pritchet,Dave Needham,Roy smith,Delroy Bryan,Jason Booth,Nicky Booth,Shane mcphilbin,Errol Graham,Kirkland Laing and Carl Froch,but dont let us forget where most of em learned their craft,and thats the local ametuer clubs run by dedicated men and women who do it for the love of the sport,The old Radford boys club being a prime example which was run by the smith family at the white horse,then theres phoenix in Gedling,Bennys,st.georges and many more. local pro boxers are coming thru all the time,most wont become big n

THE MAIN THING I REMEMBER ABOUT MARSDENS NETHERFIELD WAS THEIR TELEPHONE,AN OLD SIT UP AND BEG TYPE,THE ONLY ONE I EVER GOT TO USE,OH I REMEMBER ONE LADY WHO WORKED THERE BECAUSE OF HER NAME LOLA,LOVED THE NAME.THE MANAGERS NAME WAS STAN HOWARD HIS BROTHER SID WAS ALSO A MARSDENS MANAGER,AT SHERWOOD.

  11. tueday nights i think were called teanbeat,they were brilliant 1960 to 63,admision 1s6d,lunchtine 6d,felt great in my italian suit and winkle pickers and just a touch of old spice.
  12. wilf and yvonne harrold ran a grocery store on the boulevard up till i think the early nineties,a really nice couple who worked their socks off to keep their prices competative for the locals,i was one of their suppliers.prior to that i worked at the store in the 60s when it was marsdens,i believe the old marsdens sign can still be seen high up the wall on the corner.

A BUNCH OF US FROM OLD BESTWOOD EST USED TO GO TO THE BEESTON LADS CLUB ABOUT 1960 WE HAD TO CATCH 2 BUSES TO GET THERE,LEARNED THE JIVE WITH A GIRL CALLED BEV.GOT TO KISS ALL THE GIRLS IN A DANCE CALLED THE BLACKOUT ARCHES.THE OTHER LADS FROM BESTWOOD WERE HARRY FEWKES,COLIN PETTIT RICHARD AND PETE ROBINSON,AND KEITH MERCER WE ALL DID OK THERE UNTILL THE POLICE STOPPED US IN BEESTON ONE NIGHT AND TOLD US TO STAY IN BESTWOOD AS WE WERNT WANTED IN BEESTON.DONT KNOW WHY THEY PULLED US.MIGHT HAVE BEEN COS WE WERE DRUNK AND ONLY 15,LOL.

  15. his name was tommy lindsay and he lived in hucknall,or it could have been archie beckworth both were called inspectors,in those days they nearly all smoked even in the shops,farrands warehouse was indeed on wigman rd also the head office.one of the main bosses was a big yorkshire chap named bob vaughan his son was one of the PAPER LACE pop group

GOT ME REALLY REMINISING NOW,MARSDENS/FARRANDS WERE IN TURN BOUGHT OVER BY MOORES STORES OF NEWCASTLE UPON TYNE SO THEY ENDED UP WITH STORES FROM UP THERE ALL THE WAY DOWN TO BIRMINGHAM AND LEICESTER AND THEY WERE AMONG THE 1ST TO START SELF SERVICE STORES,I WAS PART OF THE TEAM THAT CARRIED OUT THE CONVERSIONS THROUGHOUT THEIR WHOLE AREA.ALL THE STORES AROUND NOTTS WERE CONVERTED AND MANY CHANGED THEIR TRADING NAMES,IE BULWELL BECAME SAVEMORE AS DID LENTON,SHERWOOD BECAME THRIFTY,AND MANY OF THE OTHERS BEGAN TRADING AS VERNONS PRICE DOWN,DENMAN ST AND ST.ANNS AMONG THEM.
  19. marsdens andover rd bestwood est,i started there in 1960 as errand boy,farrands bought them over about the same time,and between them they had shops all over notts,i worked in most of them over the next 7 years,middleton blvd,long eaton,chilwell,west bridgford,daybrook,sherwood,arnold rd,bulwell market,valley rd,broxtowe lane,strelley,willoughby st,hillside,clifton,denman st,beeston,st.anns well rd,meadows,to name but a few,happy days and lots of real nottingham people.
