  1. #39 I watched the same program colly. Fascinating stuff. There must have been billions spent and millions of man/computer hours of calculations done, only to result in a question mark!
  2. Darkanza - Our son was born on 30th April 48 years ago and it snowed heavily that day. Would 'those of the old ways' have read anything into this I wonder? It was a very worrying and dramatic time for us. I was in the Eye Infirmary, in bed with both eyes padded and my head held stationary, while Mrs PP was giving birth in Peel St. I had just been made redundant too. So 30th April is an important time of reflection for us.
  3. What is the situation with The Spread Eagle on Alfreton Rd these days? My grandparents, aunties and uncles lived next door and I spent a lot of time there in the 40's and 50's.
  4. Please don't lock this thread. darkanza's posts are not religious, just reminders and insights about historical events. Fascinating. PP - an agnostic, with time for anyone interesting and not extreme.
  5. Hope it's a clear night on Thursday. Planning to build a fire in my stone ruin and to be at one with my ancient predecessors. Stars, ancient granite, fire, and calvados originating from the surrounding trees, really frees up the spirits. Watching the dawn.....
  6. I have been quoted 1800 euros to rectify the damage done by a heard of 50 wild boar in March. I have spent almost 2 weeks doing the work myself with the help of my son. Still plenty to do. You need to see the damage to believe it. Lovely lawns and 2 golf greens completely wrecked.
  7. Thanks for that picture firbeck. It brings back so many memories for me,as a lad and teenager. Jumped off the bridge with my mate just there. Fished regularly near the power station outflow as a kid.
  8. Please tell us more Chulla. We had quite a few tanks in for repair when I was at the ROF in the 50's - think they had Meteor engines?
  9. A close friend had his contribution to the LHC recognised a few months ago. His name kept cropping up in the papers to do with Super conducting magnets. He worked on these as a physicist in South Africa and his design made it possible for the units to be serviced. My friend has no egotistic or mercenary traits, so his work went unsung for over 2 decades. Last month he was recognised at last and invited to visit the LHC all expenses paid and given VIP treatment. That is all he wanted.and he didn't even ask for that! He does my brain in on a weekly basis trying to put particle theory into simpl
  10. There was a discrete model that had 'Speak', 'Shout' or 'Whisper' settings.
  11. A healthy attitude you have there Mr Tramp. I find that reading New scientist and other scientific stuff, is thought provoking, rather than giving all the answers and explanations.
  12. Must start reading the New Scientist again. When at Nottm Tech in the fifties, Sandy Fisher, a lecturer, always had a New Scientist rolled up under his arm as he entered the class room. It was his trade mark and he used to take up the first half of lesson discussing a NS article. I subscribed for many years and liked the way that stuff like black holes could be explained to a relative thicko like me (only understand things that I can hit with a hammer)
  13. Don't bend down to tie your shoelace in a revolving doorway
  14. Walked past Staddons hundreds of times. Mentioned before but the money chutes to accounts seemed very futuristic at the time. Just down from Staddons, on the left is Palin St. As a teenager, Palin St Baptist Church with the youth club and scouts were quite important to me. The church is still there but no idea what goes on these days. My cousin was married there. I was baptised there. Some hot times with girls there too.
  15. I used the El Greco regularly for lunch. I got five bob lunch allowance and that covered a great meal. Their braised oxtail was brilliant.
  16. It is a fact that rescue services have cut me out of a skin suit. As a 64 y/o I crashed in a bike race near Oxton. Fractured skull and collar bone. I was airlifted to QE where they had to cut off my skin suit. No embarrassment because I was heavily sedated. Quite fun really They gave me back the skin suit but it had become a four piece instead of a single piece suit. Could not walk unaided when released the day after but was able to add to my collection of NHS walking sticks from previous visits to hospitals. Yes, I'm a dozy bogger!
  17. I still have some skin suits from my bike racing days. Thought of trying one on just for old times sake. Missus might have to call rescue services to get me out of it though
  18. #43 thought you might have spotted that Darkanza. Been waiting for you to tell us something about Easter. Re crab apple jelly - we used to make that but alas no crab apples available here. However we do have a selection of cider apples, a couple which are quite bitter with high tannin. May be worth trying to make some jelly with those as a base. Plenty of hazel nuts, damsons, sloe, various plums, elder, rowan, rosehips, cherries, raspberries and blackberries in the seasons. So permutations are endless. Been advised to add some hazel nuts to our 'improved' cider to give it colour and charact
  19. Was it Jackson the Tailor on Radford Rd in the 50/60's? When I got a job as a technical rep I visited the Leeds area often and bought suit lengths from a bloke in a pub a couple of times. I took them to Jacksons who made my suits. The tailor commented on how good a quality the cloth was. £5 for 2 3/4 yards for single breasted and £6 for 3 1/4 yards for double breasted. The tailor made them up for £10 or £12 inc 2 fittings. I remember the first time I was measured. "Right or left dressing sir"?
  20. Used to go there at lunchtime when at Nottm Tech. College scarf and duffel coat didn't impress the teds
  21. Mam and dad lived at no 16 from 1955 to about 1980. Aunt Evelyn lived next door at no 14 for the same period. We moved there from Peveril St., when I was 17.
  22. Mine too, We lived on Park Rd about 300 yards away.
  23. They may have sacked him but he put them into a position where they had no choice!
  24. Dependent on his contractual conditions, aunty may sue him for lost income??? Could be millions...
  25. Terry Doakes was in the same class as me at Berridge. Blond, good looking lad and the 'smart Alec' of the class. He thought school was a joke and was bottom of class in spite of having his head screwed on. Met him when we were about 23 and he was in a spot of bother. Hadn't changed much
