  1. My brother had a friend called Martin Booth back in the 1960's/70's who lived in Hucknall, my brother's name is Philip Housley and were neigbours, was it you by any chance ?..............
  2. In the 1950's If a woman was known to be giving birth, my gran would say, she's gone to have her shoes mended.........If she wanted a pee, she would say I'm just off to Papplewick.......... What happened to the 10 o'clock horses ?.............Or corporation pop (water) .......
  3. Nothing rhymes with Orange, Purple or Silver................

My uncle Joe had a black vanguard in the 1950's, It had those orange indicators which popped up when you were turning a corner and one day it dropped off, my uncle Jack had a convertable like the ones in the old war films the German Officer's drove, he wore a white scarf and goggles, he looked like Biggles, they were the only 2 family members who had cars and I always thought that they must be very rich because they had cars - I know now why they could afford cars, they did not have kids.....................

My first car was a Mini 850 - bought it for a fiver back in 1968 from my bruvver's friend as he needed the money - I was 22 and my dad called me a big headed B----r and said who did I think I was as women didn't drive cars.........The registration was FLW 810 - It was pale blue with a radio ariel that went all the way to the back of the car........It went like a rocket on wheels, I called her Lucy (after my gran) and she was great to drive, never let me down and there was hardly any traffic on the roads back then......... Hucknall to Nottingham in no time........Bought 4 gallons of petrol

  10. In the 50's the cards were of film stars, if we got the same card, we swapped with a friend....

Yes - you picked up the phone and the operator said 'Number Please' - then it changed and you dialled the number yourself and inserted your three pennies, if the person answered you pressed button 'A' - if they did not you pressed button 'B' and got your money back..............The phone booth had telephone directories which nobody ever stole and the booth's were never vandalised.........In my teenage years I spent many a happy time in them snogging.........

  13. Very true - but he also said during the General Strike in the 1920's, when the children /people were starving during the Hunger Marches - ie The Miners..........make them eat grass.........
  14. When my grandmother, mother in law and Mother died all the clocks in the house stopped at the time of their deaths........I think that is eerie.........

Playing 2 ball against the wall.....Hopscotch, snobs, whip and top and having a large clothes line across the road or the school yard where all the girls joined in was great, when a car went past, (which hardly ever happend because not many people had cars) you just dropped the rope...........Playing rounders as well.....we all seemed to have a lot of fun back then.....................

Broad Marsh, Narrow Marsh and the Meadows were known as the the worst slums in Europe up until the war, I remember my dad telling me stories about these places when I was a child growing up in Hucknall in the 50's..........He once walked down there with his dad as a lad in the 1920's , they were selling a bed to a poor family and they were accompanied by 6 coppers for their safety.....
  19. Yes, I remember it was Locarno or Palais on a Saturday night and Colemans on a Sunday - I had some great times there............
  20. I can remember Nurdin and Peacocks Cash and Carry - they were down near the Showcase Cinema..........We ran a shop and traded with them......Happy Shopper goods, they were very popular and cheap..................
  21. Had many a wash and brush up in those toilets after work before going on a date back in the sixties..........It was s hilling for a bar of soap, towel and a basin of hot water................Oh happy days...

I can remember going after school, there was 6 of us and we were given detention for going down there in our school uniforms with red and white streamers in our hair.........I can remember seeing Dwight on the lorry with his leg in plaster after he had broken his leg.....We were sitting on the Lion opposite the Flying Horse cheering like mad.......A teacher saw us.........
