  1. Yes, I don’t think the fuel from Humberside is destined for Colwick. Someone told me that most of it is aviation fuel for Heathrow but I would have thought that their fuel farm was fed by pipeline. I can see the Lincoln Nottingham line from the upstairs windows at home and there’s lots of fuel trains day and night going somewhere. I must investigate further.
  2. It's all moved by rail from the Humber refineries now I believe. I've just been sitting at Newark crossing gates whilst an engine pulling 30 empty fuel tankers came through on a return journey.
  3. Ever since I dropped the lawn tractor in the pond I’ve not been allowed out. Maybe in time there will be remission for good behaviour!
  4. My early potatoes would be in by now but the soil has just been too clarty to rotovate the veg patch. I don’t think I’ll bother planting now and just concentrate on greenhouse stuff.
  5. There was a regular barge service from the Humberside refineries to Colwick some years ago. Until relatively recently, Whitaker’s of Hull used to deliver petrol by barge to Colwick. An old friend of mine who lived on the riverside at Fiskerton once scrounged a ride on one from Hull to his mooring on Fiskerton wharf. He and the crew spent the evening drinking in the nearby Bromley Arms before their morning departure. He said he slept uneasily that night knowing that a barge loaded with thousands of gallons of petrol was moored at the bottom of his garden!
  6. I never think of people on this site as ‘real’ people. They exist just in my imagination. If we were to meet I’m sure I would be just as disappointed in them as they would be with me.
  7. The Subaru Outback or Forrester come out very well in the road tests and if you look on YouTube you will find them to be more than competent off road. They also have a five year warranty. Jeeps don’t have a good reputation for reliability. Honda and Toyota are also noted to be reliable. We currently have an F Pace on the family fleet and that is wonderful. No problems so far after 6000 miles. We’ve had a couple of Discos in between a succession of Shoguns. The Discos were not reliable, the Shoguns were bulletproof but are now falling into the ‘dirty diesel category’ until a new model comes alo
  8. Steady on Margie, I may not be a snob - but there are limits!
  9. I was told I was a snob at grammar school because I came from Woodthorpe! I don’t think I am - I don’t mind mixing with common people.
  10. I’m sorry I was unable to attend Chulla’s funeral but my lawn tractor had fallen into a deep muddy pond caused by the wet weather and its extraction was a matter of some urgency. I’m pleased to hear all went well and that he had a fitting send off with a good turnout.
  11. You'd probably terrorise the terrorists Ben !
  12. I always ignore Government advice on travelling to Scotland each year and so far I’ve only been involved in one argument over independence - but being pursued along the High Street in Oban was not something I would want to repeat!
  13. Current Government info. still advises against travel to Libya - just sayin’.
  14. It’s all about money. When sport was amateur it was conducted in a gentlemanly/ladylike manner. Now big bucks are involved people will cheat to win. It’s just as corrupt as commerce and politics now. (Shouldn’t have mentioned politics!)
  15. We had one in our garden at Park Road in Woodthorpe. My father and I set about the concrete sides with picks and sledge hammers to release the corrugated iron bits which he sold as there was still a market for them in the late 50’s.
  16. I think the Red Cross building was on the corner of Abbey Bridge Rd. and Lenton Lane facing the White Hart but on ‘Streetview’ it appears to have been demolished.
  17. Probably rubbing their balls with sandpaper!
  18. Don’t take a hot dinner round to Jill’s house Rog!
  19. I’m fed up with going to restaurants and getting the meal served on a block of wood or a roofing slate. What’s wrong with a traditional plate? Last Saturday we went to the Old Volunteer at Caythorpe which used to be a pub but has now gone very restauranty. As it was a pub lunch I had a double beef burger. The bun was soft and soggy, the meat was dry and the hand cut chips were obviously thin skinny frozen ones. All for £13! At least it was on a proper plate. It made McDonalds look really inviting. This is the third meal out in a row that’s been a disaster. I can’t wait for Rog to set up his ro
  20. Lamb skin! Is that with or without the wool?
  21. Thanks katyjay. I thought there might be something wrong with me.
  22. Probably on her way to the gym - or the tattoo parlour.
  23. I presume a lot of us watch this. The quality of many dishes, predominantly chicken and fish, appears to depend on the crispness of the skin. Personally the last thing I want to eat is eat skin and I always peel it off. Have I been doing it wrong all my life? Have I missed a culinary treat?
  24. I’m thinking of getting a tramspotter’s book and an anorak. I’ve already got General Booth, Torville and Dean and Dennis McCarthey. Where’s the best place to sit and watch them?
  25. I think you’ve got it in for the trams. They always look very nice when I see one passing by.
