  1. Disco. That’s nothing. We had the full ship’s company of HMS Chrysanthemum and a band in the ballroom beneath us, on our honeymoon night at the Waldorf in London. We went to bed to the sound of “oh Santa do not touch me”.
  2. It was said, by Kipling I think, “a woman is just a woman but a good cigar is a smoke”. I wouldn’t know - never had a cigar!
  3. Perhaps the condoms were dropped in as a protection from the effects of smoking.
  4. She was the only woman that ever made me cry. She invented misogyny.
  5. Mrs Lockwood taught the first year infants at Arno Vale. She was an evil old bat who should never have been in charge of children. She was feared by all. Old Ma Lockwood she was called. I regularly used the cinder track and sledged down the death track in winter and also played pitch and putt on Woodthorpe Park. We could get in there after hours through a bent railing. It was my uncle, Bob Burton, the coal merchant who once kept a horse on Breckhill fields - not to pull his cart though - he had a lorry!
  6. Honestly they were a total pain. They kept escaping and one got maggots in its foot and had to be isolated in the stable and treated daily. My daughter liked them so much she’s been a veggie ever since. We’ve got four cats now and they’re not much trouble as you will know, and they are more affectionate than sheep which are totally dumb. Can’t eat cats though unless you’re a Korean.
  7. I’ve not been to Bognor since I was a child but I’ve just read the “Nowhere Guide to Bognor” and it makes Mansfield seem like Monte Carlo!
  8. I’ve got one of those in the shed. A bit smaller and made of stainless steel. I didn’t know it was called a scratter. I’ve also got a fruit press. When I retired I thought I’d lead the rural life and make cider and all that rustic stuff. The results weren’t good and the following year when I got a few sheep to to eat down the orchard grass they chewed the bark off the apple trees and killed most of them. The sheep were returned to the farm. I replanted some trees and we’ve got more apples than we can eat so I might have another go this year. I also planted a quince and a medlar which are now v
  9. All women are beautiful? I've just returned from Mansfield. I would query that statement.
  10. Some of the others, yes - but Bulwell disappearing down a black hole - hardly likely.
  11. I used to fly aeroplanes. That didn't come cheap but they were some of the best hours of my life.
  12. Please tell us where to find the cheap ones Catfan!
  13. Hi Steve I was born in Woodthorpe in 43 and left for the rustic life in 62. I also went to Arno Vale and then to Mellish. I knew your headmaster at Redhill, Walter Weddle, as he lived just up Park Rd. from us and I had an assignation with his daughter! The only people I knew from around Melbury Rd. were Nick Sharp, David Fenn and Peter Duckering but they would have been in my age group.
  14. Life would be dull without these people though!
  15. Most of my words on this forum are spoken in jest but they’re based on many years experience of dealing with idiots.
  16. They can collect more money in fines from people weeing in shop doorways than they can from pennies in the slot. You know it makes economic sense.
  17. I wasn’t aware of that and I’m a great pie enthusiast. Homemade are best but the farm shop at Hockerton near Southwell makes pies on the premises and they are extremely good. That’s tomorrow’s dinner sorted. Thanks for the reminder!
  18. Quite right too. It is International Women’s Day!
  19. Perhaps the best way to listen to hi fi is through quality headphones. The savings on speakers would be immense and the siting would not be critical. Surely using speakers requires an equidistant seating position so a group of listeners could not enjoy the experience to the full. Then what do I know about hi fi? Nothing.
  20. I think we tend to look at other people’s interests and when we’re not passionate about it we think “what a waste of money”, tending to ignore the money we spend/waste on our own hobbies. Each to their own!
  21. It was fun though at the time wasn’t it? I once built a Caterham 7 but I doubt I would do it now. Probably couldn’t get in it!
  22. I think hi fi can be a bit of a con. People might convince themselves (or allow themselves to be convinced) that more expensive is better. I think it all depends on the aural acuity of the listener and that, like all the other senses, varies amongst individuals. Is a Jaguar better than a Ford? Probably not, just more expensive and more prestigious?
  23. Yes, as I recollect Lawrence and Allen were his sons. The shop was a well run organisation with some very competent staff. I was sorry to see it go. I think Habitat occupied part of the site subsequently. I used to like Habitat stuff at the time. Not so much now!
  24. Have a look on Wikipedia Lizzie. The Pearson family shop goes back to the 1890’s. They were still in the 1890’s when we did the audit and accounts. We did find some serious misfeasance by an employee in one audit. That was my first fraud.
  25. That BSM branch was where I took my course of 10 lessons back in January 1960. The school cars were parked in Trinity Square. Mine was a Vauxhall Victor with a three speed column change and front bench seat. Fortunately my father’s car was the same make and model. As soon as I passed my test he got a 2.4 Jag so that became the car I was driving at 17! A front bench seat would have its advantages and the gear lever wouldn’t be in the way! I’ve generally driven sports cars and whilst they might attract the girls there was not much you could do with them once seated!
