  1. Ayup Ashley, There was something to do with swimming pools and small people that resulted in his demise from the soap (allegedly) Rog Minnie Cauldwell, Martha Longhurst and Ena Sharples all drank Milk stout, I think Bobby just drank milk
  2. I recall the Lenton Jct accident... A couple of 20's hauling coal down from Calverton, IIRC. Didn't it collide with a Class 25 headed parcels/ecs at the junction apex? Seem to think there was at least one fatality from the 'Chopper' crew. Can't think of any nearer GC accident than the one at Clifton, near Rugby, in the 50's involving a Leicester V2 derailing at speed...somewhat overlooked line in the safety stakes. Gruesome death at Cinderhill Colliery sidings, again in the 50's, when one of the shunting staff managed to get his head between a moving wagon buffer and the buffer stop! Per
  3. Ashley, it was Casey Court where the other Hollands lived. I was at Northgate with Keith Holland, and remember feeling sick having had to hold his hand in some PE thing, cos it stunk of 2nd hand chocolate! I dont recall the other Butlers though.....? I recall Pete saying about how he had to slip the clutch up till about 25mph, but what a fab sounding engine, and the smell of Castrol R!!!! PS, was in Matlock the other day and there was a Triton parked up.
  4. Ayup Ashley, That reminds me also of one of my old bikes, the Kawasaki 250 triple, I think it was the H2, a mate from Rolls Royce made some stainless expansion chambers for it, boy did it sound good and it put all the power around the 6000rpm band, as you say 0- QMC in about 6 seconds nice machine though Rog
  5. Ayup all, Saw all the BBC programs last week and felt bad about complaining about the license fee, at last something interesting to watch on the silly box even if one's not interested in the railways it was interesting from an historical and social point of view, firbeck, pay your visit to Nottingham and enjoy basking in your memories, I know I do when I go back, just be aware of the one way traffic routes and bus lanes, in other words Keep your eyes on the road and road signs.did you ever cycle the Tissington trail from Ashbourn to Buxton by the way, if you get the chance try it, two birds
  6. Ayup Ashley, Checkout "websites about old Nottingham" at the top of the page, plenty of interesting stuff on there Rog
  7. Thanks for that one Ashley, that Ztan Zmith's a real gem when you wanna no owt abaht owt. !clapping! 1848 ? No wonder I couldn't remember that pub, bit afore me time, 'n' yorn too ah fink...
  8. Ashley: I can't remember any pub on Nottm rd, and the only one I can think of close to Whitemoor rd was the Barley Mow, but that was more on Basford rd. The Old English Gentleman was on Browns Croft, see pic NTGM000261 on Picture the past it shows the pub on the left, halfway up. [This was in the 60's] Can you remember 'Martha' the washerwoman who lived on B-Croft ? Had a huge mangle in her back yard, there was a bit about her in the Basford Bystander recently, brought back memories. I saw a cow being killed at the Church st slaughterhouse when I was a kid, really upset me, and yes it w
  9. "can't see many of today's kids doing that".....neither can I Ashley, in fact the majority of the kids, and most adults...[if that term is applicable ?] I see on bikes don't even have both wheels touching the floor, I'm expecting to see Unicycles making a comeback, it'll save pulling the front wheel in the air. LOL ! Re: the cottages on Alpine street, I got it completely wrong, the houses I mentioned are further down, just before the mucky duck pub. Last time down Lincoln street [a few months ago] there was only one shop still trading, that's the cake shop, many years ago it was next to Fran
  10. Ashley: I didn't say Martins didn't make frames, just that his shop was small, but he did have a large garden at the back of his shop with some sheds. With you mentioning 'Jaque Anquetil', and all the jazzy extras on your bike indicates that you're a cycling enthusiast ? As I said, Martins ran a very popular cycling club and there were always lots of cyclists milling around his shop on 'outing days' with some fancy looking bikes. Those houses you mentioned on Alpine street are still there, as are the other buildings opposite, though the old 'Maltings' have been turned into student accomodat
  11. Ashley, the location of the scout HQ is now a grassed area about 50yds x 25yds, there may have been a 'bungalow' there at some time but I can't recall it, Martins bike shop was on David Lane a few yards down from Coombes cobblers shop which was on the corner of Lincoln st/David lane. Mr Martin smoked an evil smelling pipe......he ran a bike club called the Basford Wheelers for several years. Didn't know he made bike frames though, his shop was a very small converted terraced house.
  12. Thanks for the info on Street names,,,, ,,,, it's no use me coming home for a look-see,,,,, not only do I not know where i'm going,,,, I don't know where i've been !!! DEN: 'Butch' dosn't ring a bell i'm a fraid. ASHLEY: I thought it was between SAWR & Carlton Road ! Christ, I used to live opposite King Edward Park on Carlton Road just before I moved,,,,, over BONDs butchers shop,,,, you'd think i'd know ?! I thought it was: as you come down S.A.W.R,,,, turn left on Alfred street - towards Carlton Road - & he was down there on the right. but then again, I thought Alfred street
  13. Erm Ashley,,,, A skilled electrician could have got in twice (And have a bob left over for a pie and programme) 2/6d + 2/6d = 5 bob
  14. Jimmy Sirrell isn't dead yet, a great manager though, but apart from the Nottingham Evening Post, his name wasn't exactly spread all over the national media. Perversly, I could imagine a statue of him appearing outside Meadow Lane on his demise without question, assuming they can find enough fans to cough up. Incidentally Ashley, you talk about getting gongs for the sick and infirm, Sirrell should qualify for that, how he managed to turn around that sad team in the late 60's was one of the greatest miracles in football, what Cloughie did with Forest in the 70's was amazing, but at least, as y
  15. Ayup Ashley, Wasn't Robert Shaw "skipper" in 633 squadron? Rog
  16. Hi Phil, remember me Ashley? John and Ian's dad
  17. Ayup Bazzer, Ashley is right Andy Bone on Arkwright street just before the railway bridge was the main agent for Itom, they moved to the top of Huntingdon street after the meadows but closed down in the late 80s early 90s, I think Des Bone is still about but not sure how to get hold of him, I will ask my brother in law as he used to knock about with him Rog
  18. Thanks folks. BIP: I hadn’t seen that - thanks. I can’t make my mind up what model mine was from that tho’. It was a full race machine,,,, so it might have started out as just about anything ! I got it in ’64, so I guess its racing days were over by then ! It was 50cc with 3 gears & foot change. Full fairing & very angular (GRP I think) tank. Foot rests were only about 2” long,,,,,, so I ruined many a pair of shoes when cornering,,, almost took the skin off my elbows at times also – boy did it corner well ! ASHLEY: coo,,,, I wish I’d know that at the time. As it was super-tune
  19. Ayup Ashley/Pat, Byards leap, on the A17 just before RAF Cranwell Lincolnshire, between Newark and Sleaford Rog
  20. I don't know if it's in here Ashley but I found this one facinating http://www.diplomate.freeserve.co.uk/dmv.htm
  21. No Ashley, I never came across her. Was she at Raleigh? I think most big firms in those days had a punch room, did she work elsewhere? I don't remember a band playing at the Locarno before we had the records start, I just remember dancing to records. I should imagine the Palais had a band though.
  22. Ashley/ Mick Thank you. Ashley I was not at Mapperley in 1967 but I did go to some wild partys there when I was a student. I walked round the 'old ' hospital some three years ago and took some photographs. Mick there was some boys at TB that thought there was a major bone in a certain area !! I agree NHS has gone down hill and would not wish to work again in the system. I had many happy memories of the NHS in Nottm-it was really good then. I thoroughly enjoyed working at NG hospital. A /E was very busy then but NOT the violence we see today. In my last years in London stabbings/shooting
  23. Ayup all, I agree with you Beefsteak so in future I will be looking forward to a comedy show rather than a fishing show, Ashley, I'd forgot all about fishing Vernon park pond, I must have been fishing that in the 60s, I think it was sixpence for a day ticket, didn't think of using the car battery method I always used the bread flake or maggot. Is there still some fish in there? Rog
  24. ASHLEY: Sorry mate – didn’t go to that White Heart,,,,,, strange,,,, I was never offered drugs in there,,,,, or not as far as I could see,,,, it was a bit dingy ! CHRISSY: I’d love to drop mick a note, or get in touch. We had some great times,,,, right up till I moved away. DAVE: I don’t know anything about this Margaret,,,, we weren’t close. Westdale Lane School,,,¸was that opposite Dougie Fernes building supplies ? If so, that’s where I got the sack ! Not from the school,,,,, we were working on it when my boss came up and said: “ere Baz,,, is it true you brought a bear to work the
  25. ASHLEY: The one on Glasshouse Street ? Yep. We saw Ambrose Slade there one night. Can't remember a great deal about the place tho' - I think I only went a dozen times or so to see live bands. CHRISSY: Do you still see Kluk ? He was my best mate. Give him my regards & tell him that Baz was asking about him. Explain it's the Baz that moved to Cornwall,,,,, ask him for stories of our pasts as well,,,, you might enjoy them !!! It sounds as if I should know some of your family,,,,, BS: Any pictures of Carlton Central School ?
