  1. Anyone have memories of the 'Dancing Slipper' and the 'Trent Bridge Inn' (TBI)? They had some good bands at these places during the Trad' Jazz' boom of the sixties.
  2. My friend Eileen and I used to get over to Nottingham as often as we could in the late 60's, we lived in Derby and it wasn't as exciting. We used to regularly visit the Ad Lib Club, the Union, the Boat Club and the Beachcomber. Anyone remember Paul Chapman, he was a real flirt! I found an old diary from 1968 and according to that Bruce Channel was on at the Union. Other places mentioned in my diary were the Salutation and the Belvedere but I can't remember where they were. In Derby Clouds was the popular nightclub at the time.
  3. [Moved from another topic] Yes indeed Al There were some Famous people who appeared on the Stage at those clubs. "The Union" which was more progressive had groups like Cream. "The Boat Club' Which was more Rock, I saw a Afro Rock Group called DANTA "The Brit" was more soul Mod stuff. I saw Ben E King sing Stand by me here. There was also a club in the basement of the Bridgeford Hotel, (now the Rushcliffe Borough Council Civic Centre). I can't remember the name, but it was where Zak + Kirt started. They later moved on the Babel Club on Huntingdon Street. The boat clubs folded as more
  4. anyone remember the boat club, imperial hotel or the yorker mansfield rd? i used to go to them all, signs of a misspent youth.
  5. Thought i'd start a new Topic......don't seem to be many of late
  6. Anyone ever frequent any of those clubs?? Working at Clifton and then Cotgrave after Clifton closed I was an automatic member. Cheap beer, sometimes good entertainment. One of the best I ever went in was Hucknall Colliery Welfare, always packed, good entertainment etc, and of course beer a lot cheaper than any pub!
  7. There used to be a lot of cycling clubs in Nottingham. Here is a list from the 50's and 60's. These are clubs that I belonged to at some time.. Nottingham Sphere CC, Nottingham Castle BC, Hucknall Road Club and N&D Clarion. Then there were - Nottingham Wheelers, Basford Wheelers and a couple more I cant remember. Of the four clubs that I belonged to, only one remains - N&D clarion but now as Nottingham Clarion being separated from Heanor Clarion.
  8. I actually started my dj career by accident, when the guy i had asked to dj at a gig id supplied kit for, wanted a break, he suggested i take over, i did, and the rest as they say, is history, but, in that period, i joined NJD, and they sent me to loads of different venues, before i ended up at Zak and Kurts venue "The Babel" So, apart from going back to the place i auditioned at "Annabels" on Victoria St, i worked at Toffs, at The Bridgford Hotel Oscar Wildes at Holme Pierrepont. Isabellas Goldsmith St Zaks Club, Station St Madison Goldsmith St Arrabellas/ Scamps Wollaton St Theres m
  9. Hi everyone. Hippo Girl and I have set up a new group on Facebook to gather information about the clubs of Nottingham. I know there is much info on these pages and I have been looking through it, but I thought I would let you know and if anyone wants to help, you can join the group. It is called 'Scene Before in Nottingham'. Cheers Maurice
  10. This website is a bit rambling, but if you click on the headings down the left side and on the links on various pages, there are quite a few photos and items I've not come across before. http://www.lewys.co.uk/Schooldays.html
  11. up til 1970s(or later) Nottingham Coop had at least two staff social clubs. The Southern Club at Ruddington. Church Street I think? Had a wander down on Google street view and cant see the building now. There is a newish Coop supermarket on Church Street, is that where Southern Club once stood? They had another at the bottom of Derby Road. The Western Club.

  13. Over Christmas we got to talking about the Nottingham Boys Clubs. How were they founded, who by, are there any left? What brought it up was boxing, and how it keeps lads off the streets etc. Anyone know if there is anything on the web, or a book, about Boys Clubs? [/size]
