Another letter in the Post today about the Intercon I WORKED at Intercon [a former Nottingham nightclub] from just after it opened for about five years, in the box office first for manager Dickie Richardson and then Dave Crook. Later Mecca took it over and Brian Lawrenson and John Bowers followed. One of the memorable nights was Valentine's Night, 1974, and a little known band called Bay City Rollers had been booked a few months before the date. By the time Valentine's Night came around, I think they were at #2 with Shang Alang and I had to fight my way to the door as the queue stretched b

Re Intercon dj's, I still work with Chris King, at The Westgate Suites in Long Eaton (last Friday in the month!) and apart from that, he was one of the guys in KWS the Nottingham band who had a big hit with a remake of KC and The Sunshine Bands "Please dont Go" in 91 was it? He also has a succesful scooter company, clock the reg plate on his Bentley, its S600TER ! Heres a bit of a tale re one of the bouncers who's been around the city a while, Deano (Dino?) who I knew from The Babel, and later Michael Isaacs and Harpers. I was doing the gig at The Baltimore a week or 2 back, and spotted h

Here's the letter from the Evening Post. Kath I REMEMBER the Intercon well. I used to go there in the late- 70s, mainly to the Northern Soul night on a Tuesday. Chris King was the DJ. I believe he's in the record business now and also DJs at Northern Soul nights in Notts. The entrance as I remember was through what is now Vision Express. I cannot recall entering through the Clock Tower, though I remember going down flights of stairs to it. The lower dance floor was a revolving floor, which was fun when you had had a few beers. I made many friends at the Intercon as the soul people were

The late Terry Flynne who worked on the door at the Dungeon was a really nice bloke away from there. I worked at Intercon when it opened in the 70's - later to be Tiffanys (under Vic Centre) and Gerry Gibson, head door man was only about 5"7 but what a tough guy he was.

Before that it was named Tiffany's and prior to that it's first name when it opened was Intercon. It was under the first apparition that many of the bands there I think. I recall a three-piece Thin Lizzy appearing there and also Gary Glitter amongst others.

'favourite Motown tracks of the day'
Charlie replied to radfordred's topic in Keep the Faith - Soul and Motown
Well yes, but it is cool when you can drop the fact into conversation! My boss at the Penny once persuaded all of 'Chairman of the Board' to come up to Scamps after they'd finished their gig at the Intercon, so I did get to be their DJ and we did have a bit of a chat............but that is pretty well my claim to fame. You're half right about Gladys :-) but it's fair to say there are some excellent tracks out there - she does a stonking version of 'I heard it through the grapevine'. Still, that's probably true of all the Motown artists. -
Crikey yes, Frank Being a bit of a new lad on here it sometimes takes a while to comprehend how long some of the threads have been around for. I guess the important things is to get there in the end eh! I seem to remember three acts being on there in the space of a week or so when Intercon first opened. My memory might be failing though. Certainly Think Lizzy appeared (cos I ewas there - underage!). It was the original three piece with Phil Lynott, drummer Brian Downey and Eric Bell on guitar. It was round the time of their rendition of 'Whiskey in the Jar'. Eric Bell left shortly afterwards

Well done Stu - it only took just over a year to get a reply. Not a lot of people can remember it as the Intercon. Worked in there when it was being built. Saw quite a few groups perform in there.

Have you met anyone famous in Nottingham and where
Frank replied to radfordred's topic in General Chat about Nottingham
I met Leslie Crowther in the lobby at the Albany hotel once - he stayed there when he was recording The Price is Right at Central. Spoke to him about Phil Lynot of Thin Lissie who was married to his daughter, as I had been to see them at the Intercon. A real Gent. -
It was around 1971 that INTERCON opened. I attended for an interview when they were looking for DJ's. Unfortunately I went on the night they were advertising for Bar Staff! There is a recent picture of it posted here somewhere?

Was the club in Vic centre called Intercon?
-
Before INTERCON opened I attended there for interview for DJ Job. Unfortunately the day I attended, they were interviewing Bar Staff! But for that, I might have been in Chris Evans shoes today.
-
It was called the INTERCON when it first opened in 1974. 3 levels of dance floors and 'restaurant' - saw Thin Lizzie there - crap live!!

Edwin is one of the great soul singers of all time. I first saw him in about 1970 at a Small vilage hall type of club which I can't remember north of Nuthall? Anyone any ideas. The next time I saw him I think was 'Intercon', the night club that used to be below the Clocktower entrance to the Victoria Centre. The final time I saw him was in Issabella's Night Club about 1978. At this time he was carrying a lot of weight. I remember him wearing a Kaftan type outfit. Did anyone else see Edwin live anywhere? I did upload the picture to WWW.FINDAGRAVE.COM as they did not yet have an image
