NewBasfordlad 3,599
Heck of a fire on Canning circus today, caused chaos with the road closures.
NewBasfordlad 3,599
The end terrace on the left coming up Alfreton Rd just before you get to the cemetery. Like you say it will be an improvement what ever they do. But todays disruption would have cost, Alfreton Rd, Ilkeston Rd Wollaton St all closed from about 9am onwards, bus timetables thrown into chaos across the city. The Pianoman 1,535
Yes thats what I thought. Bound to be an improvement just there. Apparently its also made a few homeless people homeless
taxi ray 170
There is a report on the fire and the demolition, on NEP wesite. The council used a demolition contractor from Leicester, and had to have a excavator escorted from Leicester in order to do the job. There is a local company with a similar excavator currently knocking down the old pub at the top of Ilkeston road, would it not have been quicker and cheaper to have approached that company, as due to the commotion the machine would have been sat idle.
Cliff Ton 10,479
For anyone who isn't certain where the buildings are / were. http://www.nottinghampost.com/canning-circus-fire-causes-traffic-problems-live-updates/story-29666728-detail/story.html And the same buildings in better days. FLY2 10,109
So is the picture of Derby Rd, or Alfreton Rd. I can't place it. I use David Insurance Consultants, but that is in the middle, which was once part of Ilkeston Rd.
Cliff Ton 10,479
The photo at #5 is the top of Alfreton Road. https://goo.gl/maps/d8iso2RDu5L2
FLY2 10,109
Thanks Cliff, that was my first thought. Between the Running Horse and the old Alms houses I presume.
FLY2 10,109
They were probably like that in the mid to late 50's, as I used to get the bus from opposite there back to Bobbers Mill after I'd had my piano lessons just down Derby Rd.
catfan 14,793
Those derelict buildings should have been demolished years ago, what an eyesore for visitors entering Nottm. I used to take my daughter just down Derby Road for her piano lessons FLY ! The Parnell family by any chance ?
The Pianoman 1,535
It seems to have affected the three shops to the left of the gated entrance in that picture. I don't think it got at the two to the right of the entrance (unfortunately).
Guest
Was there a headstone shop amongst those shops?
FLY2 10,109
There was, and as a kid, I found it fascinating. Also on the other side of Alfreton Rd, was a dolls hospital shop. I never could fathom that one out.
FLY2 10,109
Re the aforementioned piano lessons #15. I soon tired of those, although I eventually did pass two exams, but sometimes skipped a Saturday morning lesson and frequented Nottm Vic station. Far more satisfying. fogrider 179
I wonder if the wartime emergency water supply was used (if it still existed). When Dakins went up in Jan 1969, we used extra water from the underground tank in the middle of Canning circus. 500,000 gallons. We used to visit it regularly and top it up.
