Beekay 5,182
You mentioned Trent bridge Ben. My sister in law's dad's ashes are buried under a piece of that hallowed turf. He were a groundsman there for many years. 1
Cliff Ton 10,479
I was aware of cricket when I was young because my grandad was interested in it and often mentioned the subject, so I became familiar with the names of players who were around in the early-mid 60s. Brian Bolus always comes to mind. I specifically remember my grandad being impressed when Sobers hit 6 x 6s off Malcolm Nash in the match against Glamorgan. My grandad worked at Players and used to go to Players' Rec (the sports ground on Aspley Lane) where he was an umpire in local league matches. I never actually went with him on those occasions, but he often mentioned them.

philmayfield 6,187
Used to see David Gower in our local sometimes. His agent, John Holmes, lived in the village. They’d sometimes bring Garry Linacre along as well.

mary1947 2,086
It might surprise you Ian, but i like cricket, I wish we had a ladys cricket team when I was young, I would have joined also I would have had a brillant coach as my dad had trials to play for England and was accepted. At the time he had just married my mum and he could not have afforded to give up work. While on holiday in Melborn Australia master and myself went to watch England play.

Oztalgian 3,328
Still watching the Boxing Day test between doing odd jobs around the garden. Given all the technology available to us today could someone tell me why we cannot make batting gloves that can manage to stay tight around the wrists for more than three balls. I know it is probably a nervousness thing but I wish they would stop all the fiddling with the gloves and helmets and get on with the game as the over rate is already so slow. In India's second innings if they get one and Tim Paine calls out "bowled Gazza" every second ball when Nathan Lyon is bowling I'll be putting my foot through the telly. I am so over the moronic TV commentators babbling for no good reason I usually watch it on mute.

One day on the way to a game with one of his mates his mate said "Ben are you all right? You look a bit down in the dumps" Ben replied "I'm fine thanks but my wife is going to divorce me" "What grounds?" asks his mate. "Oh! Headingly, Edgbaston, Lords, The Oval, Trent Bridge, Old Trafford, ........ or this... Ben was always thinking about cricket. Eventually his exasperated wife said "All you ever think about is cricket. I bet you don't even remember the day we got married" "Of course I do" said Ben "It was the day Colin Cowdrey scored a hundred not out against Surrey"

Oztalgian 3,328
Just watching the Oz Big Bash League and two of the commentators on are terrible even worse than those doing the test cricket. Brian Lara's comments are interesting, for instance I never knew that he represented Trinidad and Tobago in three sports, Cricket, Football and Table Tennis. One of his football and cricket under 12 team mates was Dwight Yorke who was a decent opening bat and wicket keeper and we know what happened to him. Lara chose cricket and became one of the true cricketing legends.
benjamin1945 16,182
Loved the old commentators John Arlott so laid back...and Brian Johnstone usually very funny..... Never forget the '''Batsmans Holding..the Bowlers Willey'''
Oztalgian 3,328
As soon as you heard John Arlott's Hampshire burr you knew that the cricket season was upon us. His picture painting commentary was so good you could literally close your eyes and watch the game. Ben, I don't think the above quote was ever said, it is probably an urban myth allegedly said by Brian Johnson and no recording exists. But he did actually say on air "There's Neil Harvey standing at leg slip with his legs wide apart, waiting for a tickle" Not forgetting Blowers and Aggers
Oztalgian 3,328
Just having coffee watching the "Pink Test" from the SCG. The pink test is where the McGrath Foundation raises money to employ specialist breast care nurses in the community. It is in memory of Glen McGrath's first wife Jane who died from breast cancer in 2008. In a novel way of getting funds during a low attendance Covid affected test match they have raised a record $2,200,000 in part by selling virtual seats at the game. There are a few things in the modern game that I think it could do without. The first is when did it become the done thing to fiercly fire the ball in to the wicket keeper when there is no urgency. What became of looping it back through the infield players when involvement of the wicket keeper was not required. Secondly, the knee slide to gather the ball in the field, I have seen so many examples of injuries using this method and not sure that it is any quicker than any other method. Thirdly, futile diving around the boundary in attempts to stop a four being scored, I am sure they have reduced the size of the playing surface to accommodate this. If the boundary was the fence they would be stupid to attempt this method and even now there is a risk of colliding with the media equipment and security staff who now occupy this area. Fourthly the wicket review situation, endless replays, freeze frames, zoom ins, snicko and ball tracking, some took up to four minutes for a decision yesterday, if it is that close call it early as not out, get on with the game

Who are the names and numbers for, the cameras and commentators, the crowd or their team mates because they cant remember their names. Just remembered another one, the stump microphones picking up endless inane comments "bowled Wazza" or whatever stupid nickname they have given the bowler. That is not to mention the babbling of the commentators and the continuous between ball music and attempts by the stadium announcers to rev up the crowd at the twenty twenty matches. I can't imagine what the proposed hundred ball match comes into being. When it comes to cricket I am very much and will always remain a traditionalist.

I had it wrong, I thought he was a groundsman but he was a Pavilion attendant. I wondered, with your infinite knowledge of cricket, you might have heard of him. AND IT'S NOTTINGHAM INFO.
