As some will know my wife is seriously ill in hospital, some might have little pity as alcohol was thought to be the cause , however it's now suspected there is some blockage in the liver which could happen to anyone. Anyway fact is saturday and sunday wife was totally out of it, seeing spiders, snakes, even a car drive through the ward into "the garage" (the ward kitchen) ! at other times thought she was at home threatienng to call the police if these nurses didn't get out her house!

she also managed to pull out a cannula in her arm sunday night, this was not replaced as "she said she didn't want it". and still thus monday am. I more or less said never mind what she wants put it in, but got the answer from nurses and ward manager (whatever happened to Sisters?) that they couldn't do that as classed as abuse THEY heard REAL abuse then! I went barmy!

I came home then phoned the management (not the medical side) also Radio Nottingham, as not only was the drip supplying drugs but also "food" (not eaten for days) citing fact that it's ok to force feed a murderer in prison yet unwilling or unable to help a seriously ill woman,

when I went back 2 hrs later got very frosty looks and generally ignored but TWO cannula in place one in her arm and one her stomach, with secure bandages around them! later that day she picked up a lot, eating, drinking, sitting up, aware of things! where she was and wanting to come home, still very ill but hoping for the best

Ashley

Very sorry to hear of your wife being in hospital.

I hope she makes a swift recovery.

Unfortunately like any public service, you only know how good they are once you need them.

One would expect certainly the health service to have an understanding of the needs of a sick person.

I hope you can bring us better news of your wife soon.

Ashley, I was so sorry, and angry, to hear of your wife being in hospital. I'm also proud of the way you dealt with the situation to protect your vulnerable wife. I'm sure that the hospital staff involved will think twice in future knowing that you will report them to the Management and Press. I hope your wife makes a full recovery and I send my wishes to you both.

I am very sorry to hear your news Ashley! Just a couple of years ago my own wife and I spent a whole summer thinking that she had lung cancer because of a misdiagnosed chest xray, a full three months waitng to see a consultant and all the worry and stress that goes with it. We didn't jump for joy when told all was ok we both cried such was the relief.

Hope sincerely that she makes a full recovery.

Well done Ashley, has to be done now and again, you have the last word in that type of situation.

I don't think it is the nurses, more like management and hospital policies.

A fast and healthy recovery to your wife, and my kind regards to you both.

Bryan

Wow, just reading that, all i can say is wow! .. I got treated like dirt on a ward after giving birth in city hospital, they put an empty drip back into my arm, they left me to sleep in my own blood, i was humilated when the nurses came to clean the beds, blood on the floor and up my back.. i stood there crying and apologising. I had the buzzer taken off me and was told 'your a mum now, youll find a way of getting to your baby'' i had two epidurals so i was totally numb, i couldnt move! I found a way to wiggle to my buzzer and buzzed in for help, guess what - they took my daughter away from me for the night, the nurse said they were busy and i was just disturbing them and that it was so i could get some sleep, i didnt sleep, i cried because i felt useless. Baby kicked the bit in my hand for the drips, they left me like it for 3 hours pouring with blood and hanging out before i ripped it out myself in the end. they refused me a blood transfusion too & i was back in hospital 3 weeks later from none stop extremely heavy bleeding. The only reason i tell you all this is because the story ashley posted about how they treated his wife really doesnt surprise me! & im so glad he took action, i didnt because i felt like maybe i asked for help too many times in one night, maybe they were just busy.. making excuses for them. My partner and a few family members didnt mind marching down to the reception to let rip at them all though. Luckily, the 3rd and 4th night on the ward was lovely, but maybe because it was different staff, them two nights i was totaly relaxed but then i could do everything for myself.

I seriously hope your wife makes a speedy recovery, Ashley, i know some people may have little sympathy because of the drink issue like you say, but these things can happen to ANYONE! I send my thoughts and love to you both at this difficalt time & i really hope shes starting to feel somewhat better.

Hi Ashley. Sorry to hear of the difficulties but glad you were able to take a stand. Can't comment on British hospitals as I have not lived there for forty years but we have some horror stories here too. Then they try to put you in debt for the rest of your life to go with it. Hang in there, buddy. Hope your wife makes a fast recovery and get out of there.

Had another go at them tonight! (I'll be getting banned) last night I spoon fed Isobel most of a baked potato topped with cheese and some of a little iced cake, made a point of of showing the nurses it and one filled in chart stating such, early today a nutricianist? or similar (sorry no idea where from as didn't recognise her school uniform) had said they were planning to put a feed tube up her nose, then later came back to say as the doctors had seen report of her eating were not going to bother. I then read todays food intake sheet, breakfast, nothing, dinner nothing, they are putting meals in front of a near comatosed woman with shaking limbs expecting her to eat such on her own with a knife and fork, come teatime I again spoon fed Isobel a shepards pie and mash, she loved it! I pointed such out to totally different night staff and "ward manager" never seen before, (who I have no complaints about) wrote on board above the bed "Red Tray" which means all meals will NOW be spoon fed, No f****** wonder she's not improving!

I blame the American system of sue everyone for everything for this kind of situation. Everyone is afraid to do anything in case someone finds fault and sues. The poor old nursing staff are caught between the proverbial rock and the hard place and must feel impotent, their not being allowed to make on-the-spot decisions any more. Everything has to be risk assessed and written down, with no departing from strict rules - which is fine for the administrators and keeps them safe from the legal profession but is of no use whatsoever to those on the 'shop floor' who have the responsibility for caring, without the flexibility to do their job.

My first wife had a serious alcohol problem so I know what it's like Ashley. Best wishes to your wife for a full recovery.

I've just read it Ashley. We don't blame you for being so angry. Please remember us to Isobel when she is awake. Hopefully she will improve and you will be able to get her home.

MGREAD1200. In February 2011 I was told by my GP that it was highly likely that I had prostate cancer. I too had to wait 12 weeks for a biopsy, and a further 2 weeks for the result. The stress involved is unbelievable, so much so that when I was diagnosed positive the stress decreased, because then I could get on with the treatment.

The NHS is being deliberately run down by this government, it is over managed and poorly staffed, but there are still many dedicated staff in the NHS.

It is the American philosophy that 'suing at every available opportunity is acceptable' which has been imported to UK and now no-one dare do anything for fear of being sued.

I've never seen that written down anywhere.

If it's the American's fault* and it's so bad, why does the UK have to copy that example?

* An increasinlgy common example of attribution theory that appears to be growing and convenient here due to our own inadequacies.

I have been through the American system of health care.

The Urologist diagnosed renal cancer,21st July.

On the 28th August I was sitting up in bed after five hours of successful surgery.

So my question with great respect is, have you had any dealings with hospitals or the health system in America?

You don't surprise me at all OLDACE people do not normaly get that far unless they are positive, my wife wasn't put through the doughgnut until two days before the consultancy after a wait of thirteen weeks. The consultant asked us to come back the following week because he wanted to see the original xrays. We never were given a satisfactory reason for the misdiagnosis. That wait though for someone who may have a terminal illness is way too long.

No, no, no - you are misunderstanding me. I am not knocking the US system of hospital management - I'm talking about the general philosophy of suing people, in all walks of life, 'because you can'. Until relatively recently we had no TV adverts telling you to sue people - now they are on all channels, every day. The specialist "No win no fee" law companies are saying "Sue now, why not? You've nothing to lose" and are advertising themselves with slick 'Americanesque' acting. The phiilosophy has taken hold here and caused all sorts of health & safety madness in order to protect people and employers from being sued for the slightest fault. Hence nursing staff may not use their own initiative but work to the rules, to the letter and this can cause difficulties in the work environment.

Anyway, it is not my intention to hijack this thread so I will just say that I sincerely hope that Mrs. Ashley gets well soon - whatever the problems.
