  1. I put a really big blob of blue tac on the lid of my laptop and stuck a 1lb weight on it from the kitchen scales. I might add the half pound weight soon. Its really hard to open it now. Makes me sweat.
  2. I think the best bet is to use an external hard drive specifically for archiving ie not used day in and day out but just updated when necessary. These are not too expensive now 1TB for £60, and keep several duplicate DVDs and spread em about at family and friends in case of theft fire etc.
  3. Getting back to your original question what exactly do you mean? Do you mean preserving the actual old snapshot, the physical item that is? If so put them in an acid free bag (search Google for this) and keep them dark and dry. I have letters from my grandad written from the trenches in WW1 in which he was later killed. I got a load of acid free sleeves to keep them in. Not cheap but worth it. As for your digital files. Be warned that CD's can and do degrade and may become unreadable. Precious items should not be kept on flash drives (USB sticks) as they are decidedly dodgy.
  4. I knew Peveril Street in the 60’s and you are quite correct. There was a Scientific Exchange a little way up on the left. I lived in Radford and used to ride my push bike up there and drool at the kit. I seem to recall they sold things like metal detectors, guitar amps, walkie talkies telescopes and the like. I knew Machins as a Machins jeans not a shoe shop and this was up Peveril Street near the top in the late 60’s. We used to get our stay press and Ben Shermans there. My wife was born on Alfreton Road at her Grandparents who owned Flints newsagents which was next to Erics shoe shop opp
  5. Hello all. Can anyony please tell me if the car boot is on at Colwick this Sunday. We have some sh**, sorry fine surplus goods to sell. Its just with the Mathathon on I say it will be off but the good lady says it will be on. Thanks
  6. I think you need to decide how important the data on your laptop is. If it’s really really must have stuff then take it to a specialist and put your hand in your pocket. If not you need to bite the bullet and re install. If you really need the data on it the more and with respect, don't know what you are doing, the more likely you are to make it more difficult in the long run. If you still want to go it alone look here. http://www.webtree.ca/windowsxp/repair_xp.htm Good luck
  7. The Moulders Arms was tucked away on a side road near the junction of Hartly Road and Alfreton Road. I'd go there in the 70's. I don't know if its still there.
  8. One of the big Tesco's is worth a look. Got a Dell for my lad from there £40 cheaper than Dell direct. How can they do that. You will be stuck with Vista though but you soon get used to it and with the latest service pack on it he has had no trouble at all
  9. There still is a Dungeon club in Nottingham. Run by a Misstress Whiplash so I am told!
  10. I have upgraded to ie 8 and no problems but use firefox. IE is full of security loopholes and firefore is more secure so its a no brainer really. You can get little add ons for firefox too that can be very handy. Also I use a program called ACRONIS. It aint expensive and it takes a 'snapshop' of your hard drive (although depending on the specification of your PC takes about 10 to 30 minutes to do this). It stores the image in a special bit of the hard drive called a secure zone that it creates and then you can pi** about as much as you like, download and try what you like and when things go wr
  11. There was a green grocers at the junction of Grimston Road/Radford Boulevard where it met Alfreton Road/Gregory Boulevard. It was Wealthall's and Mr Harrold Wealthall wore a bowler. I used to go there for me mam before school. Nice little family business. They lived on Woodstock Avenue in Radford. I used to see him in the Pheasant on Prospect Street. I am sure this will be the shop you mean. Its now second hand washers I think.
  12. I went to Berridge Infants and Junior from 1959 then to Forest Fields. I have every School photo. Miss Rogers (mini skirts) Mr Kemp (a right bast**d and no mini skirt, at least not to school) Mrs Smith, Mrs Bull, Mr Williams (Brilliant) Mr Cook (also brilliant). Headmaster Mr Baugh (think thats spelt right. Can't remember any others. I'll have to dig the photos out. They were phazing out the seniors when I was there so by the time I was 11 the last senior had left the year before.
  13. I'm running Xp pro and downloaded something called sidebarb which adds a side panel with a clock and has a bit of a vista feel. Seemed okay but I dont like vista. Its not a patch on XP so what the hell. I took it off. Did no harm though that I can tell and if it floats your boat fine. All these bells and whistles will slow it down though.
  14. Hi Baz I am pretty sure that you can now get a wireless ready HDD unit but I could be wrong. If so that would be fairly simple. If not you would need to set up a network and share the drive or even set up a server. You would definately need to set up a wireless network and unless there is some reason for doing so seems like a lot of messing about if you havent got a wireless router at the moment. I have to say that the size of an external drive being not much bigger than a paperback and the ease of just plugging a usb lead in and the cost saving unless you have some desperate reason I would s
  15. 802.11g technology provides you with networking speeds nearly five times faster than the current Wi-Fi (802.11b) standard. 802.11g 2.4GHz standard offers you up to 400 feet of wireless coverage. 802.11g technology is backward compatible with the 802.11b. Roughly translated it means the wireless cover is faster and goes further BUT you have to have a G comatable wirless card in your laptop/PC to take anvantage of the benefits although it will work with older kit but not at the higher speeds. You can use it with either cable broadband (Virgin, ntl etc) or adsl (down the phone line, tiscali BT
  16. I used to work for Players and never got in the Bonded Wharehouse but I have been there to do some work for another company. It was like getting in Fort Knox. Anyway I went in some of the higher floors and the ceilings are not low. I'm not saying they are really high as I dont remember but I am 6 foot and didn't have to crawl about.
  17. The Crown at Rolleston has just opened up having been closed for some time. Clive and Kim Wisdom who used to own the Full Monn at Morton have it. Its a freehouse with a reasonable selection. Worth a look. Its a spit from Southwell racecourse, turn left as you come out over the train crossing
  18. What did he say. "Blimey. He's well hung" Hope I don't get the sack for that comment
