  1. I refer to the area around the turning to Bassingfield, aprox mid way between Nottingham and Radcliffe on Trent, on both sides of A52 but not facing each other, are various old properties inc a school, old garage site, former police station as well as some houses, I wonder perhaps if the old nottingham to newark road went through this "village" in a series of " S" bends, and in straightening the road and making such dual carriageway they pulled down property on one side then as bend went opposite way demolished property on the opposing side of old road? have not been able to find maps to co
  2. I used to work on the district heating system that fed Victoria Centre and St Ann's, the main pipes from the old boots power station run through the thurland street tunnel and although not strictly in my job description I used to go down the tunnel on pretext of inspecting the mains, there were around 1980 2 cast iron signal lights high up in the tunnel, a red one and a green, originally these had been oil lamps, the green one actually had a almost blue lens which with a yellow flame showed green! I "liberated" the green one, (the red was broken) it was very rusty but you could still make out

  7. Alot of Polish in the Sherwood Rise area, talking of before their church built on there in 1950's, also alot of Italians in the Oakdale/ Upper Sneinton Dale area, was told Italians at POW camp Colwick Woods and after war as seen as no danger just left to settle? not sure if true?
  8. I am assuming you refer to the Nottingham Suburban Railway (tunnels in Woodthorpe Park) this did not go into Victoria directly being a "short cut" off The Great Northern at Woodthorpe to other GNR lines that ran originally to London Road Station, but know what you mean. There was a plan put forward when the GCR was shut to use that and the GNR as a local railway but rejected on cost, as was one I actually saw a council feasibilty study on, this was in 1970's and was using all the great central line to victoria via the tunnels, in the "big hole" that was north of VC, the planned route went thro
  9. Should add I was not a nurse or anything, working there as contracting electrician, re complaints at city? only one, a certain heart consultant, no names but bet you know of him!
  10. were you at mapperley in 1967 the night of the nurses home party where the drugs cupboards were raided? am sure pink floyd were there! the fire alarms were all set off and all the patients were on the lawn (see first line of their song brain damage! lol) another memorable time was when working at the addiction unit I accepted lift home on motorbike, we didn't even get out the grounds! crashing near the bowling green and finishing up in the general,
  11. try the vernon park method, simply throw a car battery in pond then go back next day and scoop all the dead fish up,
  12. That footpath from the 44 terminus ran past hucknall runway, once saw a crashed P2 Lightening near it, somewhere near it (maybe on it? I say that as a substantial bridge under the GCR) ran a midland railway branch line to hucknall no.1, that crossed hucknall lane (or is it nottingham rd there?) via a level crossing, yet to see a photo of such, but that path nowhere near shonki which I believe was off the road that ran originally through to watnall lane but was closed with extention of hucknall runway
  13. Was going to say must have had a big room! then I saw n gauge, even so I worked it out to be 11 ft in that with longest platforms around 6ft, once was offered scale model of new basford station, trouble was the builder more interested in reality than model railways as he built it as he saw it ie sidings ripped up and platform buildings demolished!

  15. There was (so I'm told) another lost village in the area where whitemoor avenue joins nuthall rd, probably something in it as there were lots of old cottages on the avenue and surrouding area , some industry and churches/chapels, maybe coming of the ring road destroyed such? though maybe earlier as I think we'd know more? Whitemoor Avenue (or Road?) for those who don't know starts opposite Murphy's Chemicals (former Prince of Wales Brewery) there was a pub near the start, it then runs to top of bailey street, prior to the whitemoor estate it ran across to where wilkindon street and the other e

  18. I found it on frostwire, first time I heard of it, no idea if on any album unbelievable note for note, then again cozy powell and right said fred ripped off 3rd stone from the sun by jimi, White Hart I referred to was the one on Abbey Bridge so doubt I knew you, in hippy days the glasshouse street one had reputation as a drugs den (not that I'd know anything about such, honest, true as I'm riding this bike)
  19. give that man a cigar! well half of one, I was told the horse drawn "buses" to mansfield had to be "double headed" I know that was the case going up Derby Rd to Canning Circus with a "banker" horse and trough at top and bottom of the hill

Comment made by bygones staff re New Basford made me laugh, I can tell em virtually every facory, road and things of interest, I reckon 1963 as "daft School" still there (no insult intended, just known by that name to everyone) and roof of our garage (ex stable) which went up in flames Nov 5th that year!
