  5. CT. I reckon the wool shop is the middle shop like you suggested. I think it was 2 sisters that had the shop.
  6. I only remember 2 shops near Canning Circus. One was Olivia Jude, baby and children's wear and quite high class, expensive stuff in there. The other was a wool shop across from my bus stop (22 to Cinderhill, just about where Olivia Jude's was,) This wool shop was like Alladin's Cave, crammed with packets of wool. I shopped there on my way home, 1 ball at a time. The whole amount I needed had been put aside for me.
  7. You just aged Mary by a hundred years, Beekay!
  8. Woody, you must be a young whippersnapper to know baseball caps as a kid. In my childhood the only caps were school caps for the boys, and 'ratting' caps for men.
  9. I've always thought socks and sandals were a bit daft. I thought wearing sandals were cooler in the summer. Then to put a pair of socks on, defeated (no pun intended) the object.
  10. My mam's answer to that was When Nelson gets his eye back.
  11. A lot of folks did the football pools, and were glued to the radio as they wrote scores down, to compare to their pool entry.
  12. When I was 13, dad got us a pedigree boxer dog. I remember going to the breeder up on Mapperley Plains to pick out a pup, who actually picked us! Even though he was pedigree, he would be let out in the morning and wandered Bells Lane Estate all day long. He too was fed scraps and lights we'd got from the butcher, I don't ever remember him having tinned dog food, or dry food, only Bonio Dog biscuits. If he was unwell, up to the Cocked Hat car park to the PDSA van for a few coppers donation. He was a lovable popular dog around Amesbury C ircus, I remember once yelling his name for him to come ho
  13. I can't get the map above to open, but if I remember correctly the coffee bar was not very far down from the old playhouse, same side?
  14. My frugal hubby, when he's saved a money on a bargain, will always say, there's nothing tighter than a Scottish Jew. One of these days someone will take exception and clock him!
  15. Yes, we had that one too, also To see a man about a dog. When you think about it, we rarely got a straight answer to any question!
  16. Same question, different answer. My mam's answer was Up Meg's arse to see how far it is. I did wonder who Meg was!
  17. Here's another one. Soldier, soldier will you marry me.
  18. I don't think anyone has mentioned yet, Dashing away with the smoothing iron. And also Barbara Allen.
  19. My mother said 'he's like a man made of smoke' Not wooden. I think it meant he couldn't make up his mind. A ditherer.
  20. No Jill, my 2 brothers looked nothing alike, plus 16 years between the 2 of them.
  21. My mother when she had had a rather personal exam at the doctor's, would say 'I think he was looking to see if my hat was on straight'.
  22. Mary, my brother is coming for Christmas now that Brits can come to the States again. His passport ran out last year, so he sent for a new one. He was told it could take up to 10 weeks. He got it back in a week!
