  1. I don't understand this thing about it being "right" to use the fork in the left hand and wrong to use the right hand. Who says it's wrong or right? Why is it wrong to use your fork in your right hand? Is there some legislation which prohibits it? Presumably society will crumble and there will be anarchy on the streets if someone dares to use a fork with the wrong hand.
  2. Not much. I go to the map page, click on Add your Location, then put my location in the box. It thinks about it for a while with a Progress Bar, and then coms up with this -
  3. If you took it from Youtube, it may be that it has gone from there. The person who put it on Youtube may have deleted it, or maybe Youtube themselves have done something for copyright reasons. If it used to be there but now it isn't, there's probably not anything you can do!
  4. Looking at that old photo of the Market Square, it's noticeable that today's version has absolutely no greenery at all. In the old versions there were always various trees, shrubs, flower beds etc etc. On an average day now, it's the total lack of colour which makes it so boring.
  5. A convenient coincidence http://www.picturethepast.org.uk/frontend.php?action=printdetails&keywords=Ref_No_increment;EQUALS;NTGM010766&prevUrl=
  6. It's not impossible but increasingly rare.........pubs where you don't have to put up with background music. (Wetherspoons being an honourable exception)
  7. I'd give my right arm (and other bits) to see those two appear any where these days. Unfortunately, it ain't going to happen.
  8. I don't think it was. I think this is the one and it just goes to the back-yards.
  9. For anyone who might remember the South Notts Hussar, which was near Loughborough Road/Wilford Hill; it closed about 10 years ago and then sat empty for several more years. Finally the site is being developed; looks like housing.
  10. I wondered about him; these days he seems to do voice training and voice-over work. I had a look on Find my Past in the marriages, but nothing seems to come up connecting these two.
  11. I was in Nottingham today so grabbed a couple of photos of the relevant bits with today's numbering. This restaurant Jalisco is officially number 129-131 (it has two doors) And the Royal Thai is number 189, so - as mentioned earlier, the grotty blue thing is number 191 (see post #5)
  12. The clock is now noticeable by its absence. First time that space has been empty since Vic Centre was built.
  13. Looks like Mansfield Road was renumbered. In the 1889 directory, there are two pubs listed which still exist today. In 1889 the Golden Fleece is given as 41 Mansfield Road but it is now 105. A change of 64. And in 1889 the Forest Tavern (now the Maze) is given as 195 but is now 257. A change of 62. On the subject of Mr Kilpin and his butcher's shop, the difference from 191 to 129 is 62. It fits.
  14. And after all that, my only contribution was to come up with this Directory from 1889 which confirms the address as 129 at that time.
  15. I was just about to say I hope DAVIDW can repeat his post because it's a very long and complicated one! Sigh of relief.
  16. Bin there. http://nottstalgia.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=6650&hl=date
  17. Never been a big fan of film stars or celebrities. I made an exception for one, but she has always ignored me. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Susan_George_(actress)
  18. A few minutes reading for conspiracy theorists. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-26609687
  19. Bin there. http://nottstalgia.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=9886&hl=television
  20. I think it's broken. I was on it - having put myself there a couple of years ago - so I deleted my marker and then tried to put it back again. Doesn't work. So I am now no longer on it, even though I was until a few minutes ago.
  21. I've "borrowed" this from the excellent RCTS website, because they have some interesting photos of old Nottingham which you don't see anywhere else. This is taken looking south from the end of the platform at Arkwright Street station. The road on the right is Blackstone Street, and the road going across the end of that is Kirk White Street. Absolutely nothing of this scene remains - including the two chimneys of Wilford Power Station.
  22. The building in the distance with the spire/point is the former Redmayne & Todd place, which hasn't been visible from this angle for years; interesting to see if it survives the forthcoming redevelopment of the area.
  23. Had a look at the Planning Dept. It's a bit vague, but the demolition is connected with the whole redevelopment/rebuilding of Broad Marsh and surrounding area. The ex-Chinese may be the first to go, but a lot of other buildings will be following.
  24. Competition isn't necessarily better than the main operator. it's just over a year ago that Premiere buses went into administration. They had a number of services running as an alternative to NCT in various areas. To me, their buses/coaches were a ragbag collection of what seemed to be anything they could pick up at vehicle auctions; most of it looked old, scruffy and rough. Premiere didn't bother to repaint them into any kind of corporate colour, so there was no consistent branding or logo. They operated in random colours, and often the only identifying mark was a hand-written piece of paper
