  1. And to prove it, here's the Hockley one - what's left of it. After it finished being a Woolworth's, it became a club for a while, which explains some of the colours
  2. If you read the piece linked to the Daily Telegraph, it looks like the sun never really rose on solar power. At the end of that article, there are a number of messages which highlight relevant points. Such as...... The original figures promised were based on a government subsidy which was always prone to change at any time; guess what's happened....... The returns don't seem to be quite what was promised. It will take many years before energy savings will pay off the initial outlay. What happens if the panels need maintenance/repair? Some of the companies who fit them may be little better
  3. I didn't photograph it, but Argos are one of the few companies still there. Amazingly, they've managed to survive. So your ex-supervisor may have picked a winner after all.
  4. There were quite a few suggestions made in this recent thread http://nottstalgia.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=10968&hl=
  5. Decided to grab a few photos of the emptiness. If you haven't seen inside Broad Marsh since the 70s or 80s, this might disturb you. Bear in mind these were taken about 9am on a Saturday. But also bear in mind the place doesn't get much busier at other times because there's nothing for anyone to see or do. The big white space is where the Co-op used to be. On the left is the entrance to Lister Gate Where the Co-op used to be, from the side. The top level entrance looking out towards Middle Pavement The modern world; Poundland and an empty space The top entrance - near Drury Hill.
  6. Draw your own conclusions http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-22623964
  7. That's the one, the entrance/exit which comes out where Drury Hill used to be. All the shop units there have been empty and boarded up for several years, as though something is in the pipeline, but it's never happened. Yet.
  8. It's explained here starting at post #53 http://nottstalgia.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=8647&page=3
  9. I've put this link in other threads but it wasn't in this one, and it definitely ought to be. A pile of old photos of the John Player factories at various times in the past http://www.flickr.com/photos/50284741@N02/4906606685/in/photostream/
  10. In the two photos where you can see the radio presenter, it looks very much like Dennis McCarthy who, at that time, was at the peak of his local radio superstardom.
  11. Deserves a special award. The first time to my knowledge that someone has recognised a close relative on a photo in Picture the Past.
  12. Bing, take a look at these. If you haven't already discovered them. you may be slightly surprised. http://www.picturethepast.org.uk/frontend.php?action=printdetails&keywords=Ref_No_increment;EQUALS;NTGM015754&prevUrl= http://www.picturethepast.org.uk/frontend.php?action=printdetails&keywords=Ref_No_increment;EQUALS;NTGM015755&prevUrl= Then go to the PicturethePast homepage http://www.picturethepast.org.uk/index.php and start your own search.. They have a lot of old photos of that corner of Radford.
  13. The subject was mentioned fairly recently here http://nottstalgia.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=9247&hl=anagas
  14. In the 'Pubs closing down" thread, there's a mention that the Old General is being demolished/rebuilt as flats and shops. It's not the only thing connected with the Old General which is falling down. Two years ago danny333 posted this link about the real, original Old General and his gravestone in Nottingham. A few weeks ago I was in the General Cemetery looking for family history bits, and I came across the Old General gravestone, but it's now lying on the ground having fallen from its original position. And this is where it should have been.
  15. There was a programme on BBC4 last Sunday (it was a repeat) about the 'golden' days of wrestling, which included many of the well-known names mentioned here. And fortunately, it's on iPlayer http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b01p96ly/Timeshift_Series_12_When_Wrestling_was_Golden_Grapples_Grunts_and_Grannies/ It includes some fascinating - and slightly weird - stuff about Kendo Nagasaki (Peter Thornley to his friends)
  16. In that case, I'll go for this one. Another PH which fits your location.
  17. You can't see it very clearly here, but on the original there is an indication of P.H. (Public House) at this location. It's the only PH along the road in the late 19th century so I'll guess it's the King of the French..
  18. How exactly did you try to add an image? What did you do? As fch782c mentioned, you have to transfer the image to a picture hosting site, and then link that image to Nottstalgia.
  19. A masterclass from the chinese, on a website promoting a local car manufacturer. Click around some of the sections and see the english language as you've never seen it before. http://www.lifanmotors.net/index.php
  20. There's more of them now than ever. Using trailers or caravans, there are quite a few in the city centre and in retail parks/DIY car parks. One of the few growth industries in Nottingham over the last few years.
  21. And just to prove it.......and bring back a few more memories.....
  22. Post #17 - and then several following - had answered the query with additional details.
  23. This one, I guess http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/crime/8636424/Boston-explosion-five-dead-in-huge-fireball-during-illegal-vodka-brewing-operation.html
