  1. I was on a tram recently (before the swipe cards)and a conductress said she used to be a bus driver. People with free bus passes used to have a go at her if she would not allow them on the bus before 9.30. Sorry you are "too early". Hence the oldies got known as "Twirlies"
  2. Why do they need regional weather forecasters ? They could all come from a central feed.
  3. Yes they should be banned from trains too.............
  4. Bl**dy hell how big's your garden??
  5. This was the model cottage before its recent makeover If you put Model Cottage, Bramcote Lane, Wollaton into Google you will see a picture of the cottage taken about 1979. Try http://www.flickriver.com/photos/gwoodward/3093326109/ Its probably more like the original Probably built in the early 1800s, this cottage was once on the outskirts of Wollaton village, on the track to Bramcote. It now sits beside the busy Bramcote Lane.
  6. Used to go to The Lord Nelson in Sneinton as students...................seam to think we used to drink pints of Kimberley's revenge
  7. Wollaton Park Golf Course was set out in 1927 after the Hall was acquired by Nottm City Council. Peter Allis at one time rated it in the Top 20 courses in England
  8. I suppose that these supplied the Brown's Woodyard on Woodyard Lane Wollaton, which would have been the main "depot" for the Middletons. Ample coal to fuel the plant and also the canal nearby for transportation. Another reference to Slang noted.
  9. Its where I discovered that Dovecotes were for providing Doves to eat not just cause they looked pretty !
  10. What does Gutter Slange mean?
  11. The Rose Grower was named after roses grown on Lowes Nurseries. Roses were grown there because of the soil and the fall out from Stanton by Dale kept the blight off the roses. The site of this pub is now a care home. The information about the Admiral Rodney IS NOT useless . It is informative. The pub used to have large signs on the building saying Home Ales. If you carried on along the old road you came to the canal. Before the canal was built the pub there was The Kings Head also associated with horse driven coaches. I imagine miners used this public house.
  12. This term was previously noted in correspondence reference the Tottle Brook and is shown on Old Maps (now lower Cockington Road) Has anyone any idea what it means?
  13. There used to be a car around these parts with 5EXY.............not seen it for years.
  14. Two pubs , one on Lambourne Drive, one on Trowell Road Wollaton next to the new Waitrose. I would like to know how many names changes each pub has had Lambourne Drive, Now The Wollaton . I can remember The Willoughby and The Glasshouse? Trowell Road The Kings Head (way way back) The Roebuck Now The Cavendish? Were there any others?
  15. I have spent a lot of time in and out of hospital this winter. I wish you all the very best. They are on your wife's case and she will be in very good hands, I can assure you. Wishing you both the very best
  16. ITV appear only to have adverts for betting, sofas and beauty products. If they have banned CIG adverts why not ban gambling adverts . Rich or poor it can only lead to an addiction and that's good for no one except the bookies. Perhaps Ed Miliband ought to play Bingo. Its the only was he'll get No 10 (yes I know its an old joke).
  17. Not trams as we know them. Bet in didn't take them three years to get them up and running as they are in Nottingham. I wish I was good enough to sketch like that. Its rather cute isn,t it ?
  18. You will have registered by now that I have an interest in Tramways in the Wollaton / Bramcote area. I have attached a sketch of what a horse drawn vehicle may have looked like. If the drawing is to scale then note the width of the cutting on Moor Lane. It would have accommodated a vehicle of this width.
  19. Strange you should mention "Narrow Marsh"! I am half way through reading that now. If you register with "Britain from Above" you can use the site's zoom. It enables you to get a very detailed look at the Nottingham Canal through to Trowell., using various photos. There are several ref The Leaderflush Door Factory and looking east clearly shows the Trowell Colliery, Canal, Bramcote Hills, Fields Farm and the view back over the meadows towards Nottingham. Especially interesting to me is the photo that shows Wollaton Village and the Bramcote Lane which goes almost to site of the Hemlock Stone P
  20. "Britain from above" has a very clear photo of the Leader flush Factory at Trowell . I don't know how to copy this but it might be copyrite protected.I think its about 1946. What do you think ? I think that the last steam train photo is the rail bridge which is on the lane to the Trowell Garden Centre which was built on the canal. I think the picture is taken from the track east of the bridge looking west . The photo is probably taken from the site of the Trowell Colliery. Anyone like to comment?
  21. If Noggin the Nog came from the Norselands who was Nogbad the Bad? The Sheriff of Nottingham?
  22. My response has just bombed so here goes again. Many thanks for the detailed articles posted above and great photos.! Once this wretched wind drops I will take a camera to this area and try to align with the track and locomotives and Black Path Bridge. You have said much in recent postings about tramways in the area. I will now take a detailed look at as many maps as I can and see if I can get some sort of timescale to them. The first wodden railway in the world was on Old Coach Road Wollaton so its not surprising that Willoughby and business partners would want to extend tramways in the mi
  23. Further to my post about Bramcote Lane formerly being called Noggin Lane (or Noggy Lane) I have noticed, from the above mentioned 1901, that on the canal on the way towards the now Trowell Garden Centre there is a Noggin's Nook. Who was Noggin?
  24. After all the wind today I think the suns given up and gone to bed.
