  1. Although born at the City Hospital,my parents 1st home was on Middleton St.,Radford, until sometime after moved to Elm Grove St. Anns. My father was away for the first 6 years of their marriage in the army. Goodness knows how those young women coped. I hope you can see how angry I get as the country our parents fought and died for is just handed over to all and sundry.
  2. I remember it well!! As a young kid I joyfully went to get my monthly sweet ration and duly handed over my precious coupon which was cut out of the ration book. What a joy in about 1950 that I was able to buy my 1st bar of chocolate without the infernal coupon. Little wonder there were no fat kids in my generation. There were coupons for everything in those days including clothes.
  3. Might as well keep the Christmas/winter theme as long as we can before the PC crowd ban it !!! (anyway I think its pretty smart.)
  4. Is any one else seeing things in a `purple haze?'
  5. You certainly are a wealth of information P & B. Alan lived around the corner from me,and his sister was the best mate of one of my former girlfriends...
  6. I still play L.P.records on my 40 year old equipment. Several C.D.`s I own and several records are compared. In my opinion the records sound infinitely better. (some are 60 years old). What I will mention whilst here,I just bought 3 Shure Styluses from America on E bay. Very unhappy they sent inferior types.Anyone else had similar problem?
  7. Just listening to Svjatoslav Richter playing Rachmaninoff 2 as you do when all of a sudden remembered Alan Roper (with the injured leg) ,good singer ,used to sing at the Palais or Sherwood Rooms. Anyone know what happened to him?

    St. Faiths

Isn`t St Faiths a posh private school now? Amazing that private enterprise can put a school there and make it pay, when next door they had the most superb building, surrounded by acres of playing fields in the most ideal location with brand new science labs and assembly hall with 6th form building. Not forgetting the river and cricket and football venues close by. Now the site is occupied with ugly little matchboxes. Boy,must some brown envelopes changed hands.
  9. Tram Rides through Nottingham (1902) BFI ... (6 mins) This fascinating record of Edwardian Nottingham was filmed from the driver's platform of a tram on a single journey through the city centre between its two main stations. The sequence follows the same route as today's Nottingham Express Transit tramway, taking the viewer along Listergate and Wheelergate into Old Market Square before turning right into Long Row and on into Queen Street.
  10. I came across RT Simpson on the way home from school in Gunn and Moore when I went in as usual to ogle the bats which of course I could never be able to afford. He was in the shop and I remember not to proud to chat to a scruffy little urchin. RIP Reg.
  11. I have just purchased a new cartridge and several styluses/?styli?( on ebay) for my very ancient music set up (40 years old ,purchased in Germany, been with me around the world now in Adelaide ) still in perfect condition producing wonderful music. (2 Direct drive turntables, Hitachi PS -58 and Technics SL -1100A). Still have hundreds of L.P`s Many ,many favourites, but the happiest memories flow from Bob Dylan`s work and Beethoven`s Violin Concerto in D major, op.61. Coming close behind,Art Garfunkel (alone without Paul Simon).I bought it to celebrate the birth of my eldest child at Wegb
  12. Ah....just like Adelaide today (T-shirts) and glorious sunshine 36C.
  13. ...and don`t forget the actors who ended up performing on the wrong stage!
  14. Should be a good rematch, if it ever comes off, especially if they can get it on at the City Ground. You into underwater boxing then Michael?
  15. I was at Mundella by great chance !!!!! 1 out of 140 kids in my year at Blue Bell Hill who passed the 11+ not much hope in those days. Although 2 of the most brilliant people I know(my wife was one) failed it! Yes Calder was headmaster a complete gentleman and scholar.
  16. I wonder what such organisations get out of handing out these bibles and the brainwashing that goes along with it.? I have several very dear friends in UK who were indoctrinated at school by `Pop Calder (who on retirement became a vicar). I must admit some of the finest people I know are true believers though! The more knowledge one gains ,the harder it is . Of interest to me is the present state of the Muslim religion. 600 years ago Christianity was in the same boat, with the Sunni and Shi-ites (Catholics and Protestants as then killing each other in the name of `God') and also killing innoce
  17. Do you also remember the paddling pool or was that before your time?
  18. I remember the ice skaters from the local grammar school who used to use the pond as a free rink until Stace got busy with the cane !
  19. If you get the chance it is so beautifully studied and detailed ,have a look at the documentary/investigation by the Australian detective,in every detail, to make sure the secret service avoided blame. A most brilliantly worked ,and methodical investigation.
  20. Personally I like the theory by an Australian detective which shows the fatal shot came from a `secret serviceman'(employed as a temporary driver, but recruited for the day due to the drunken state of the normal detail). Have a look at the photo of the skull showing the huge exit wound caused by the type of round used by them,as compared with the 2 rounds from Oswald.
  21. Toleration Ms.CC " AND I GENUINELY DID NOT KNOW THAT I WAS SHOUTING WHEN USING CAPITALS JUST TAKE MY WORD FOR IT THAT I AM NOT SHOUTING WHEN IUSE THEM. " (A.Charlesworth) He now understands.
  22. Reminds me of the saying about America. America is a country which went from infancy to old age without ever reaching maturity.
  23. How true! I remember Kennedy`s father doing everything possible to sell us out to the Nazi`....and I will never forget how Kennedy Jnr brought us to the edge of nuclear oblivion.A series on the ABC at present shows him in his true colours.
  24. If any one were in the unfortunate position of receiving care and advice from an organisation like NHS (British) (17th in Europe) compared with AUSTRALIA (1st in world health care) with universal access to PSA screening. Bilboro ,you are so `head in the sand',there is little point in anyone trying to help you
  25. Mr Charlesworth, no point in arguing the point further. There is an excellent balanced article for lay people from Sept. 2013,(American Cancer society). We are all agreed ( except Bilboro) that PSA is the best generally available test in the at present imperfect situation. Read the article. Well balanced and easy to understand. Early detectionDoctors agree that the prostate-specific antigen (PSA) blood test is not a perfect test for finding prostate cancer early. It misses some cancers, and in other cases it is elevated when cancer isn't present. Researchers are working on two strategies to
