    Funerals

Out shopping the other day a funeral passed by it was a horse drawn carriage and looked very majestic. No one took much notice so it got me thinking! can you remember when if a funeral passed people would bow there heads and men would remove hat's. The street that the person lived on would have a collection for flower's and not forgetting to draw your curtains Has all this now gone? ps This was the first time in all my 60plus years that I have seen a funeral with a horse and carriage (don't tell anyone)

  5. A real gentleman Waiting for a bus there was an old gent before me, when the bus came he touched the front of his cap "after you my dear" and we thought manners had gone out the window.
  6. Living in South Africa in the 70s near Jo'berg we decided to go to Durban for a holiday, while there we went to see the Zulu's they use to (for want of a better word) do Zulu dancing, when they stamped there feet the ground felt just as though it was going to split open. Unless you have seen them it's hard to put it into word's but the flim shows you just how it was, but not the fear that must have gone though the men who were fighting. I think it was shame about the Zulu's as they were a great nation. While in the hotel one of the waiter's called Nelson was very polite he was a Zulu I w
  7. When teaching hairdressing NVQ 2 Customer Service came in and trying to teach 16-18year olds was a nightmare. If I am in a shop and being served by a grumpy shop assistant I am sorry but I can't help myself I will always ask them if they are happy in there work and this always gets a smile, if not I just tell them that there's always someone to take their place. Other times do you find when waiting to be served you go invisible? I agree with Catfan and Benjamin 1945 Go to USA Customer Service is excellent
  8. Thanks poohbear it must be an age thing when you can't remember name's of song's.
  9. Nottingham born and bread I used to love my city (Queen of the Midlands) it use to be called when we had all the big stores Tobys Wolle's C&A Griffin's Pearson's and I bet members can remember lots more. Now living out side of the city I catch the bus into Nottm I look at the buildings as I travel up Alfreton Road and I agree they do look a mess. I use to work at the top of Alfreton Rd in the 60s and my friend's mum used to work at Jersey Capwoods The factory on Alfreton Rd with a large chimmey Now this factory has been closed for years. I think it closed in the 70s and it was left t

  14. when the doctors advised us that my mother-in-law needed to go into a home it was a very hard decision to make. At the time I worked full time and had two sons (plus husband) who also worked. I offed to give up my job and have mother in law to live with us if I could be paid as much as the home was being paid to look after her. The powers to be said it would be no problem for me to look after her but I could only be paid careers allowance which was only £25 00 A week. The minimum wage had not yet come in. The £25 00 was a not even half of my wage's. I looked at 19 homes for her and before I

  17. I started hairdressing 1962 we only did ladies at that time. Also we had cubicles, hairdresser's pay was by a wagers council and believe me it was still small fry after 3 year apprentice, 2 year as improver 5 years to qualify. Wage after 5 years £5 00 Thank god for tips. Then we joined with the men and unisex salons came in, but wages did not get any better you still had to relay on tips and commission (commission take £100 plus your wage and your boss would give you 10p or 10d in the pound) Then progressed to salon owner still wages were bad Plumber's Electrician's and other trades peop

  20. Can any one remember having steak for tea in the 50/60s, I can only remember having steak when Berni Inns came in. When you started work you had to work a whole year before you could have any holidays also you only got paid sick pay after you had been off sick for 3 days. I was an apprentice hairdresser we worked 9 00 till 6 00 Mon Tues and Wed Thurs /Fri 9 00 8 00 and Saturday 8 00 till 1 00. I think this was 44 hours at age 15. Wages for a week at 15 £1 9s6d.
  21. Just like to add a few more comments about St Ann's. The council said that the house's were slum's and was unfit for humans but what is a slum when St Ann's was a people's community. Children were never left on there own even when mum went shopping/work/ even to the pub all neighbour's would keep an eye on the children, their never seemed to be any children in trouble. If mum and dad were at work and the child came home from school (latch st kid) every one would check on them. Each Saturday morning you would see all the ladies out sweeping there front and washing there front door s

  23. Now there's a doctor who most of our women know Dr Cochrane? Remember having problems during pregnancy had to see Dr Cochrane at city hospital NOW DON'T LAUGH Being a young lass of 20 and never been to or in hospital before, on arriving the nurse told me to take off my cloths and put on a gown. Dr Cochrane came into the room with some young doctor's in tow told me to take of the gown for examination GOOD GOD THIS WOMAN IS NAKED! he cried nobody had told me to keep on my bars and pants. Have you ever felt so silly? Did not make this mistake again
