  1. Thank you folks It's mostly down to Word Association though! What a wonderful site, the best on the internet Trouble is I never get anything else done, the house is a tip and the ironing is piling up ....... never mind, I've got me crown!
  2. The Porchester is no longer a bedroom furniture shop, they sell school uniforms in there now. I used to go in there with my parents now and again, they liked the pub and knew quite a few of the regulars, but that was about 40 years ago.
  3. Yes we probably saw each other lots of times! I'd forgotten about my Uncle being a milkman until I read Babs' post.
  4. One of my uncles was a milkman in Clifton (and maybe Medders at some stage). He also tragically killed a child who had crawled under his float without him knowing. He gave the job up straight away, just couldn't deal with the tragedy.
  5. When we lived in Netherfield we were right at the bottom of Dunstan Street and the dyke ran across the bottom of our garden but I don't remember the water turning white, mind you I was only 8 when we moved from there. We were just a hop, skip and a jump from Burton Road playing fields and would jump over the dyke and go and play up there a lot.
  6. I'll go and have a goz tomorrow and let you know. That is if it ever stops raining over here!
  7. I think it was something to do with the water works. I reckon I know where you mean, I've taken our dog a walk round there, If it's where I think it is then it's up some steps from Mapperley Road and over the other side is Corporation Oaks.
  8. Any of you Mellish boys remember an Irishman called Mr Murrell (or Morrell) who taught English in the early 60's? He left Mellish around 1967 to teach at Carlton-le-Willows Grammar. He lives close to me and I see him virtually every day striding along the road carrying bags of paraphernalia that he's usually picked up in charity shops. What's amazing is that he's now 95 or 96 and is still very upright, active and alert.
  9. Thanks everyone for your assistance, I knew I could rely on you! What is quite noticeable is the fact that it didn't take long to bury someone in those days ......... only 2 days in this case, 4 days for another brother who died in 1944 and the same for my Grandad in 1954. That's compared to 9 days this year for my Dad (and we had the funeral arranged before I even got the death certificate). I will send off for the death certificate for Bryan but for now I can at least get the little man with his hammer and chisel going on the headstone. Thanks again
  10. Yes I know I should do that but I already have the wheels in motion with the memorial stonemasons. I stupidly didn't realise that the info I gave them was date of interment and not date of death. It was only when they sent me the 'proof' that I double-checked everything. If no one on here can help then I'll attempt to get the death certificate. Problem is that I want the stone in place by my Dad's birthday, on Boxing Day.
  11. Well that looks hopeful then. All help appreciated, thanks
  12. I wonder if anyone can help with this one? I'm in the process of organising a headstone for the family grave at Wilford Hill. My Dad was buried there in April this year and also in the grave are his father and 2 brothers. There has never been a headstone on the grave so I'm getting one made. I have death certificates of all except a brother who died in 1937 aged 8 years. I do have the date of interment as 10th July 1937 and could make a guess at date of death but as this will be set in stone, literally, I'd like to get it absolutely right. His name was BRYAN MOSS, date of birth 7th June
  13. Before Clough. It would have been around 1970-72 I think. The days of Barnwell, Storey-Moore, Chapman, Hindley, O'Kane etc. however judging by what we read in the 'Red Tops' the young footballers still go out and get smashed ....... and get caught on camera!
  14. Forest players frequented it on a Wednesday night ...... supposedly their final booze-up before the Saturday match!
  15. I walked up Exchange Walk one day in the summer and crossed over to the Council House where there was a sign stating that filming was in progress and if one didn't want to be on the telly then don't walk across the front of the building. So I won't spot myself because I chose to do a detour!
  16. Yes, I've been watching it and enjoyed looking at our lovely city. I saw Stephen Tomkinson (?) interviewed on the telly the other day, I think it may have been on BBC Breakfast or the One Show, and he said that the Market Square scene where he stripped off was shot on a Sunday morning, Fathers Day to be exact. He had to take his kit off 7 times til they got it right! Yes that was the old Victoria Club building, Tantra's doorway was in shot just up the street.
  17. Double Nine Three Double Seven. We had Co-op deliveries for just about everything when we moved to a new estate in Arnold. Milk, bread, groceries (in a big library-type van), coal. Then a row of shops was built locally which took most of the business away from the Co-op delivery people. Now that lovely row of shops has become a load of takeaway outlets and everyone shops at Asda, Sainsburys and Tesco .......... not the Co-op !!
  18. Is she still her friend dgbrit? And is she looking forward to doing the chore again? Taking the pee is an understatement, wish we had a dog-sitter who would be happy with a tin of peas!!
  19. Have you got some Oirish in ya Carni? I never win anything!
  20. That was the error msg I was getting earlier but seems to be ok now
  21. I've had problems all day, it's been a bit hit and miss but that might just be me!
  22. My granny lived at number 16, the first one on the right that had access onto to cricket field. I don't know names of any of her neighbours except Doug Hewitt who lived in the very bottom right hand corner, he was my uncle's brother.
