  1. Just for info really . Probably stating the obvious and expect most Notts expats in the UK know this but those with a Sky box can see the local BBC, E.Midlands programmes , including the local news at 6.30 pm every night on 960 (if you get a bit home sick). I don't pay for a sky card anymore but this channel is one of the free ones on our old Sky box luckily.
  2. £400 fine ??????? Must be more to the story ? Seems fair.......as long as you can invoice the council the same amount , if they fail to collect the rubbish on the right day !
  3. We live on a very quiet cul de sac but always lock front and back doors as you just don't know who's wandering around . Even a TV personality was in our "clink" , just round the corner from us on Friday for assault whilst drunk ! Breaking news : Rory McGrath bashed a man and woman that tried to assist him "whilst he was in drink" http://www.falmouthpacket.co.uk/news/10422193.Comedian_Rory_McGrath_arrested_in_Pool_on_suspicion_of_assault/?ref=rss&utm_medium=twitter&utm_source=twitterfeed
  4. Further to Cliff Tons image , if it is that building that you mean , looks like it was demolished in 1935 , according to this site that has listed all the demolished country houses throughout the UK . It lists about 50 in Notts and provides links to images and info for many of them . http://lh.matthewbeckett.com/lh_complete_list.html This from the Evening Post 13/11/1931 , looks like it could have been an article about the plans to demolish the building . Unfortunately the OCR software hasn't translated it well and you will have to pay to see the actual scan . http://www.findmypast.co.uk/se
  5. I've just "liked" the page but don't think that will help much as I don't have many "friends" on FB.
  6. Hard to find any live streaming webcams like the one at Perranporth but this fixed one at Carbis Bay has some movement . Carbis Bay is the main beach in between where you are staying at Lelant and St.Ives and its at the bottom of a very steep hill. http://www.carbisbayholidays.co.uk/carbis-bay-web-cam.htm
  7. Just had a flood warning for certain parts of West Cornwall .
  8. Bit grim this morning I expect . Heres another absolutely brilliant webcam that is on top of The Watering Hole pub that is actually on the beach at Perranporth . This one is a continuous sweep of live pictures covering nearly 360 degrees of the beach and sea . Zooms in and out but looks like the lens needs a clean ! Just press the arrow , it does take a few moments to load but worth the wait. http://www.the-wateringhole.co.uk/webcam/
  9. Then theres this story that Eric Pickles wants some free parking in towns (about time but doubt it will happen .) http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2324069/Pickles-wants-free-parking-popping-shops-Minister-wants-grace-period-combat-ridiculously-high-charges.html And then this , that consumers want more independent shops on the high street. I hate these sorts of surveys as the public are bound to say they want more shops , whether they use them is another matter ! http://www.smallbusiness.co.uk/news/outlook/2356078/consumers-wantmore-small-shops-at-their-disposal.thtml
  10. Theres a few stories this morning about improving the town centres . The first is a grant for landlords in Nottingham to update their shops . http://www.thisisnottingham.co.uk/Cash-help-landlords-shops/story-18946946-detail/story.html
  11. Charming . I meant it to imply that I used to operate the PAYE system for the business we used to run but since we had to close, due to the recession I haven't had to deal with it on a weekly basis . Don't get my pension till next year . The pdf you quote is the older budget figure that was superceded in the autumn statement . http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/incometax/emergency-code.htm
  12. I'm a bit rusty now on paye but wasn't last tax years code 810 ? The tax code for 2013 -14 was ammended to 944L meaning you can earn £9440 before paying tax . http://money.aol.co.uk/2012/12/07/how-to-make-sure-you-re-on-the-right-tax-code/
  13. I love this live webcam from Tregenna Castle , overlooking St.Ives . There about 5 different cameras in sequence but the best one is a close up of the beach just to the right of The Sloop . Also the shot of Godrevy Lighthouse .Not much good now as its getting dark but on a clear day you can see people on the beach and the waves lapping . http://www.tregenna-castle.co.uk/tregenna-webcam/ Any other good location webcams ?
  14. The John Fowler site is at Lelant which is a few miles from St Ives . Never been but if I've googled the right one ,the witchcraft museum is up near Tintagel / Boscastle and you would be better visiting there on the way down or on the way back , as it would be a bit of a journey from St Ives and back , especially if theres traffic .
  15. Thanks for the image but in my memory of more than 30 years ago, I think it was on its own , further down the road , about where the silver car was ? The knit craft shop on the left , used to be called Lilians .
  16. Our eldest has booked a caravan in the Vendee , France at a place called La Tranche Sur Mer for 6 days and then 4 days in Benodet in Brittany . Room for us and all we have to do is pay for our car ferry . Easiest way for us is Plymouth - Roscoff and that costs £350 return !!! Takes about 7 hours crossing time and if its rough , can be dreadful . Cheapest crossing is obviously from Dover but that entails about 8 hours drive this side and then same again t'other, plus probably an overnight stay . Must investigate to see if crossing from Poole is any better .
  17. Anyone remember the record shop on Main Street ? I'm sure it was called Simons ?? I often would go in and have a look through their shelves though must admit , didn't spend much in there I'm afraid . Also further along, used to go to the youth club which if my memory is correct was on the corner of Arnold Lane.
  18. Pixie , St .Ives is lovely and just visiting there will take up one of your days , assuming the weather is OK .You don't say where your accomodation is but I expect the bungalow you have will be on one of the large holiday parks across the bay nearer Hayle than St Ives and sometimes its better to use the park and ride train service at Lelant to get into St.Ives , as parking can be a nightmare in the season . The nearest places otherwise are Sennen , Lands End , Marazion for St Michaels Mount and Mousehole . Wouldn't go much further than that, in the time you have , especially with a little on
  19. Don't know if this helps but there was a pottery manufacturer called Chas. Allerton which could be where the "C.Aller..." comes from.Any of these similar ? http://www.thepotteries.org/mark/a/allerton.html There are some pottery marks here for them but not like you describe: http://www.oldandsold.com/pottery/greatbritain16.shtml
  20. Jimmy Tarbuck,Stuart Hall, Kevin Webster, Freddie Star, Rolf Harris, Bill Roache....The prison pantomime's going to be a belter this year.
  21. Whilst in Nottingham last week, I picked up the latest Bygones , dated April 29th the one with Cloughie on the cover . There is a feature of pubs of St Anns featuring Sir Colin Campbell pub . Also a piece about the history of lace . Theres also letters about the previous issues feature on Alvin Lee and one from the lead singer of Jonathan Kane and the Freemen which is a name I remember from Digby dances . Shame the Post don't put Bygones online .
  22. Yes I remember the frog spawn but couldn't think if it was tapioca or semolina . The reason I didnt like corn flake tart , was that I ate some when at Westdale juniors and promptly puked it back into the bowl I'd just eaten it from. (Sorry if you have just had your breakfast ! ) . Probably had a bug and nothing to do with the food but put me off it ever since . So while I eat corn flakes with milk still dont like the baked tart.
  23. Welcome Sheila ! Not heard the one about rubbing your chest with a blue brick but it sort of makes sense . Weren't blue bricks the water-proof layer of bricks at the base of a building ? So the joke was it would keep the damp off your chest ? Well its a theory .
  24. Really don't know . I did go out for a short while with a girl called June Kettleborough who was in the same year as Sherrie Hewson i.e. a year below us . I think June went to drama school with Sherrie and she did get a few TV parts but don't think she was a singer .
