  1. Just finished reading "Saville's Spinney: True Story of the Colwick Murders of 1844" by Mike Sheridan, who I believe used to post on here (maybe still does). Very enjoyable, very readable for a history book and well worth the 2 quid or so it costs to download from Amazon Kindle. Quite lengthy and has verbatim witness testimony.
  2. I’ve got Writer’s Cramp. Had it since my early 50’s, which was a bummer cos next to a library my favourite establishment was a stationers, and I used to like buying new pens (sad, I know). It’s not something that makes your hand ache after you’ve been writing, it effectively stops you from writing. I was very glad when chip and pin came in! Not likely to get any better, but in this age of computers etc., not too bad. Asked the quack if It had a latin name so at least it wouldn’t sound like a joke .... so, I’ve got focal dystonia.
  3. Lovely bits of film! Not a “transport fan”, but watched those clips all the way through. As I saw the numbers on the trolley buses, the routes popped back into my mind - the 43 which I caught from school at Trent Bridge, “my” bus, the 39 up Carlton Road, the Wells Road 40 etc., etc! Lots of stuff happening in the background too, with glimpses of the Central Market and Griffin & Spalding. Why, oh why, did they get rid of the trolley bus to replace it with a much more expensive, inferior “clean” transport 50 years later. As said earlier, pure egotism.
  4. Now that you've lowered the tone again Katy! I've just been reading these latest posts and was amused by Phil's post of about an hour ago, when he talks of having an inside and outside loo and a sitting tenant!
  5. And I wonder why they called it a jerry?
  6. My lad’s just come back from the shops. Took him an hour. Cars all over the roads, hills impassable. This is Mapperley, Gedling Road, Arnold Lane, Somersby etc.
  7. As a kid I was terrified of that staircase. I remember it had black mirrored walls and for some some reason I had a fear of falling through them. More spookily I was terrified of being PULLED through them! By what I don’t know!
  8. According to Nottingham City Transport’s own website, in 1936 “the trams finally gave way to progression with the last tram running on 6th September” So have we progressed backwards by bringing them back? Personally, I could never see the rationale in bringing them back. Fixed routes, serving a few, no flexibility, one breaks down and brings the whole line to a halt, fantastically expensive to build and maintain etc., etc .... Was it just an ego trip for a few councillors wishing to leave their mark on history? HS2 seems a similar project to me. A lot of expense to arrive in Lon
  9. Yes! Nostalgia is bitter sweet, and sometimes more bitter.
  10. Compo, as an ex (currently - but who knows) metal detectorist that's a fantastic job of cleaning! What on earth did you use???!!
  11. I often wonder if anyone is taking photos of Nottingham and other cities/places which will become the “picture the past” database of the future? A lot of people seem to take photos on their phones nowadays, which are probably lost when they swap phones. I started to find old photos online, and then go and take a modern shot of the same scene, the criteria being that there should be some object recognisable in both photos. Wonder if PTP would be interested in my modern shots?
  12. Oo-er! To actually post the image do I use ... Link Direct Link Markdown Thumbnail for forums Thumbnail for website Hotlink for forums Hotlink for website ???
  13. Just started using imagepost, so just testing ... https://postimg.org/image/3zgodn8bd/
  14. Good for you, mate! I might not be as forthright as you, but I talk to strangers too. We’re all from the same species and all going in the same direction, and apart from a very few wrong-uns, were all basically decent with the same fears and hopes as everybody else. Hurts no one and helps many.
  15. I was 15 at the time and I remember the police knocking on our door during their house to house enquiries. My prize possession was a Bowie knife in a leather sheath - my grandma hid it under the mattress! One theme that ran through all the rumours was that the murderer was someone from the gay community and that nobody spoke to the police because they were, at that time, breaking the law!
  16. Noel Street Baths is now the Nottingham Climbing Centre. Gives a whole new meaning to climbing out of the deep end.
  17. Hi Mary, The name rings a slight bell, but I didn't go to Manvers, I'm afraid! My sentence for passing the 11+ at Hogarth School (now the Hindu community centre) was to be exiled to Mundella, where I did 5 years hard-labour, mostly in solitary. Have toyed with the idea of coming to a meeting, but haven't managed it yet, perhaps this year.
  18. Yes. From about 1950 (I guess) to the mid 1960’s. Number 10, just past those few shops below pavement level.
  19. Is that the old lunatic asylum, then? As a young kid my stomping ground was from Cardale Road down to Dakeyne Street. I remember the doctors on the corner of Dakeyne Street - poor Dr. Dillon always looked to be in desparate need of medical attention himself. He always looked very sallow and unwell. Occasional forays to King Edward Park, but home turf was from maybe Woodhouse Street onwards. Marsden’s grocery shop, pre supermarkets. Johnny Wells’s newsagents where we bought our penny bangers and comics (I have a vague idea he killed himself). A little further up was the
  20. Hello Colin, I've done quite a bit of research on the Whyman's recently. Your's and my wife's common ancestor seems to be John Whyman. If you want copies of the Word files I've compiled, just pm me your email address and I'll send them to you. You might have a lot of the information already, but it costs nowt!
  21. Sorry, I was trying to quote from a previous post of Willow Wilson’s re the photo of Bobbers Mill railway crossing, but technology got the better of me - as usual!
