  1. Yes, Rog but as a purist shouldn’t it be a vertical type?
  2. Mansfield has been ranked 64th in the top 150 most adulterous towns in the UK. Bugger all else to do in Mansfield I suppose. I thought Mansfield was a nice family town - perhaps it’s because they’re all related!
  3. They were really good and a trio with four people is even better!
  4. My neighbour down the lane, Bill Brazier, formerly of ‘The Fabulous Beatmen’ has been a driver on the Great Central for many years. Still driving steam trains at 78. We were at Mellish together although he is older than me.
  5. Money’s no object to me when my wife is accepting this as her birthday present!
  6. We’ve had two shooting deaths in our village in recent years. I think if I live here much longer I’ll do the same but I can’t get my wife to move!
  7. He was getting on (older than me), and yes he was depressed. He still drove a car though and a Fiskerton has both a bus and train service. Waitrose do deliver to Fiskerton ‘cause it’s posh! It wouldn’t bother me but would the nature of his demise put people off? Search for the house on line. My wife says the decor puts her off. It does have its own landing stage on the river.
  8. If Fiskerton is so wonderful (and living nearby I’m not saying it isn’t) I can recommend a splendid riverside house there for sale which has been on the market for over a year. It belonged to a very old friend of mine, another extremely grumpy old bugger. Has it not sold because he shot himself there? Is it jinxed? Would it put you off?
  9. Just to complete our washing machine saga we’ve just bought a Samsung. Purely by chance, when we got home, my wife found out it was a “Which Best Buy”. Here’s hoping!
  10. It’s worth breaking a leg to live near you Rog!
  11. Yes, even Morgan have Ford and BMW engines. Nothing is wholly British anymore. I look at my own British made Jaguar and see the ‘country of origin’ labels stuck on the various components. France, Czechoslovakia and many others and Jaguar/Landrover are owned by Tata, an Indian company. Their new all electric I-Pace is made in Austria. There’s nothing ‘British to the core’ these days. We live in a world economy and that really is what makes the world go round. We can’t be insular anymore. We’re not a superpower but we are still a significant player. It’s still best to be ‘British’.
  12. Russia makes its money mostly from exporting natural resources. They don’t tend to export high tech consumer goods and the West hasn’t set up manufacturing plants there because of the hostile regime. The Chinese have stolen a march on them there. I presume they have the technology as demonstrated by their space programme and weapons development, or are all those missiles we see made out of discarded cardboard from toilet rolls?
  13. I find that being miserable makes those, all too infrequent moments of happiness, much more enjoyable. Even then you can just add a soupçon of misery just to spoil it for others.
  14. It’s on my doorstep. I’ve not been for years and when I did go it was fairly bland but then what do you expect of a workhouse? I gather it’s been jazzed up a bit now so I must have another look.
  15. How can a miserable sod like me possibly comment?
  16. I'm pleased I'm not the only one who's suffered from committeeitis!
  17. It was interesting to see the Ford 3000. I’ve got the 2000 which is slightly rarer because the 3000 had the higher horsepower and was not much more expensive. I think mine was used for pulling a mower as it’s fitted with turf tyres and an open cab. I did retrofit a loader bucket but I don’t use it much these days. It could do with a good clean and a coat of New Major Blue.
  18. I did have a Caterham 7 but not a Lotus 7, but we do use Portmerion crockery so I’m almost No.6
  19. No more of that for me. I’m a free man. Don’t tell my wife I said that!
  20. I’ve sat on a number of committees in the past but I’ve found by experience that the majority of the members are blithering idiots who think they know everything but in fact know bugger all. As I was in the accountancy business many years ago I’ve also been the honorary auditor of many village type institutions. In these cases, the treasurer was usually someone who didn’t want the job and didn’t have a clue how to do it. That meant spending many evenings checking every single item to just make the accounts balance. What did I get? - a ‘thank you’ and a bottle of indifferent red wine. I’ve stop
  21. I used to park our Mini on that very spot where the Riley is back in the 60’s
  22. I always wondered when that was built. It was quite advanced to build such a dual road at the time when it was not really needed. It’s good to see that someone in the ‘powers that be’ had the foresight to do that. They certainly failed when they built the Newark by-pass as a single road. I’ve just returned from Lincoln. The A46 is like driving over a ploughed field. I’ve never seen a major road in such a poor state.
