  1. I love our TomTom and also sometimes use google maps or Waze at the same time. I like to see if they both agree. (I’m not the driver!!) We also have an in-car satnav but it needs updating so don’t use that. Before we go anywhere different I also ‘drive’ round the area on Street View. I really love doing that! @LizzieM I have used ‘3 words’ as well - it is so clever! I just LOVE Satnavs!!! Strangely enough, we absolutely rely on TomTom when we come to Nottingham up the MI because after we’ve left it, there are some roundabouts with several exits and if there
  2. @benjamin1945 I think what you need is a Time Machine to take you back to the 50s/60s when life seemed less complicated and worrying. (But even back then, many people had a hard life …. ) I’d love to go back to the Locarno times with you and trogg but only for a short time as I’d miss my family and friends. It would be great to dance with you both - but I hope the Time Machine would also give me my teenage body back!!!
  3. I had the cataract removed from my left eye 22 years ago and the result was wonderful. Also the op never hurt at all! I now have a cataract in my right eye but the eye doctors have said it’s probably not worth having it done as cataracts aren’t my main problem …. It’s macular degeneration which is causing my poor eyesight.
  4. @Messy Hessey there is certainly a Facebook page for Carlton le Willows. You’ll obviously have to use your real name for that, though…. Best of luck in your search for details of your past….
  5. @LizzieMSorry to read about all the worry you’ve been going through. I hope all the problems will soon be completely resolved. As nonna said, it’s good that you are now home in Nottingham. We will be thinking of you both x
  6. @Cliff Ton Picadilly is a very appropriate landmark as the statue of Eros is in the centre!
  7. @philmayfield It was Sally Fremantle who lived on that corner you mentioned. Patsy went to Bluecoat? I think, after she was 11 if you ever see JG say hello from me
  8. @philmayfield Patsy lived almost in the middle of Greys Road, almost opposite Jeremy G. Can you remember if she was at Arno Vale or Mountford House? Perhaps it wasn’t her I was thinking of…. Could have been Diana Lane who lived on Fairview Road. I know it was one of my little playmates.
  9. @Messy Hessey The name ‘Mountford House rings a bell with me - I think one of my friends went there - ..Patsy Knowles - who is the same age as me. I may be mistaken though. Perhaps @philmayfield will correct me if I’m wrong? I went to Carlton le Willows from 1954. Have you found their Facebook page? It isn’t very riveting but there’s lots of information on there. Just keep rambling on, we love to listen to other people’s memories.
  10. BK I quite like the Beatles but I’ll always prefer the songs and singers from the mid to late fifties. ….
  11. Col, an interesting story…… I wonder, like you, what the background story was . ……
  12. @mary1947 I so agree with your last paragraph! But I would go even further than that, as I believe it is wrong to take away someone’s life even if they have taken away someone else’s.
  13. Col, our runner beans are the same, as are the (outdoor) tomatoes. However, some climbing French beans have done really well.
  14. @benjamin1945 I love that ‘memories’ song you posted but it also makes me feel sad when I think of all the people I used to know in my youth. It’s also strange to think that when I was growing up in Woodthorpe, I was only 3 miles away from many of you Bestwood boys (you would all have been a bit young for me to notice though, even if our paths had ever crossed )
  15. Just as long it’s not a KNOWN area for drug dealers, cannabis farms and knife crime….. although I realise that all these problems are endemic these days. Even in our Cambs fen villages, there are sometimes similar problems. Col, from your last definition of Bestwood, it definitely is in Bestwood!
  16. Col, it’s one of my grandsons who is moving to Bestwood. His flat is on a road somewhere off Arnold Road - nearer Hucknall Road than Edwards Lane. Does that make sense? CT That looks nice but no idea if it’s anywhere near to his flat.
  17. Mrs B and BK. Thanks - I’ll have a look at recipes tomorrow
  18. @MRS B Thanks for the advice - there are several forming on the plant now
  19. Here’s a photo of some ‘Pattipan’ squash that I’ve been growing in our garden. The fruit are about 7 inches diameter and I wondered if they are ready to harvest them yet? Anyone know?
  20. I’m feeling really happy as one of our grandsons is moving to Nottingham from Newcastle. He will be working in Annesley Woodhouse with Galliford Try as a Graduate mechanical design engineer (whatever that may be!) He has sorted himself a flat in Bestwood which is only 2 1/2 miles away from where I grew up. It looks as though there are several ways to commute between his flat and work but I suppose it will depend on the time of day and the traffic which will be the best way to go.? I really am bubbling up with happiness ……
  21. @carni Really pleased you’ve done a bit of cycling once again. The new pills certainly seem to be suiting you! x
  22. Oops! I’m sorry that what I wrote has caused such a reaction. I realise that on this particular forum my views are not those of the majority of members but I believed I was free to express them occasionally…. Anyway, I’m sorry if anything I’ve written has disturbed anyone. I’ll TRY (once again) to keep my posts more bland from now on
  23. Unfortunately, ‘tongue in cheek’ and ‘banter‘ sometimes (but not always) can hide real prejudice. Someone can say something hurtful or even objectionable then, when challenged, innocently say ‘But it’s only banter’ or ‘ I was speaking with ‘tongue in cheek’ Also, Obesity and tattoos are totally different things. I think the most important consideration is a person’s character and their attitude and consideration towards other people. The lady in your pharmacy, Rog, did seem uncaring and rude though. But, (dare I say) she may be suffering from big problems in her l
  24. Phil, what have tattoos got to do with the NHS?
  25. ….. and ‘mice’ being pronounced as ‘mace’
