Blimey Ashley, after all these years! where abouts are you living now? -
Ashley, your description of a round cloud is about right. I don't remember hearing a bang though. I was just begining to think that I had imagined the whole thing! This must have been the collision that I saw. Many thanks, Johnl.

Do I assume Ashley you lived near to the Valve Shop? Coincidentally, I am mates with the boys there (the original owners grandsons) Simon, Mark etc, in fact they all used to visit me at The Love Shack regularly (especially Simon) plus, my first new bike came from Jack Claytons next door! As for the factory you mention, I have no idea about it at all, but it was just across the road from where I used to live (Northgate) as a kid. Where was the barbers you mention, cos on Northgate there was Dixons (dickos) and Rogers further down on the same side, just down from Breffits the butchers. I liv -

Local Radio????
Pete C replied to Craig Strongman's topic in Nick Palmer's Nottstalgia General Music Chat.
I used to listen to Trent when it first started..1976 I think..enjoyed Jon Peters show..and Kid Jensen's..also Chris The Mouth Ashley...now you get those prats Jo & Twiggy..absolute garbage..sorry Craig hope they are not friends of yours..but they really are...only local radio I listen to now is Radio Nottingham's football coverage when Forest are playing and that's it...a local radio station should be just that LOCAL or what's the point. As I've said before Craig I prefer Radio Caroline on the internet..I bought a pair of wireless speakers and have them in the kitchen..or take them where -
Sherwood Station?
Dick Hatts replied to mick2me's topic in Kat's Carlton, Mapperley, Arnold & Sherwood Forum
Wow Rob, you actually rode on NSR. I wish some film footage would turn up of it in action. I think they ran a special on the line in the 50's. You'd think someone would have shot some 8mm then. I'm too young to remember it, although we did used to play in the rail cutting on the mapperley branch before they filled it in loads. Used to be a lot bigger even though it was backfilled. Used to be a nature reserve. All the stuff I know about it comes from books I've read. there's a good book by Ashley Durose. Lost railways of Nottinghamshire by Geofrey Kingscott is a good one too. -
Thanks for all who posted replies about The Fountain Pub. Other pubs I remember are The QE(Queen Elizabeth),Bottle Lane. This was a very well run pub and the toilets were spotless - always a good sign. There was Langtys(was The Peach Tree), Turf,Blue Bell,Lion in Clumber Street,Princess(was the Parliament House).I also remember The Crystal Palace,Clumber Street which closed down when I was living down there and was converted into a shop.It had a "listed" front window which could not be changed.A town or city's pubs are what give a place character. These days all towns have an All Bar One or mayb

Tristram Shandy were named after "The book they could never film" They had a 'backing singer' who never wore (allegedly) Knickers, the guys gathered round the stage to catch a quick peek when she did her spins as part of her dance routine They also backed "Chris Ashley" (Mentioned else where) on his micky take of Forest going to their second European cup final "Magic in Madrid"

Chris is a very good friend of mine . I used to work with him at Catchems Corner in Basford(Went to his second wedding (To Margaret) in 90/1) Wembly to see Nott's play and beat Brighton in the play off final of 90, and I carried on going to see them when they moved to the Bull in at Diseworth,. Sadly I lost touch when I went abroad in 95 His Nickname for me was Judas 'cos I kept stitching him up with loads of old stuff that he used to come out with and secretly swapping the next track that he was going to play, when he wasn't looking,(I regularly swapped it for his recording of Magic in Madri

I had an argument once with a mate (Chris Ashley to be precise) that Amen Corner were from Nott'm, but the leader (Andy Fareweather-Lowe) turned out to come from Cardiff,so it may be them under a misconception on your part

I'd like to have seen that! I thought Chris Ashley's shows were an absolute hoot in those days. Duncan Hamiltons's sports book of the year Provided you don't kiss me bears wtiness to some of the things that Cloughie would do to help those less fortunate. I went along to Hamilton's talk at Lowdham Book Festival last summer and he reiterated lot's of instances where Brian would step in when somebody needed help. Cloughie was a complicated and contrary man and sometimes his behaviour did not compute with his public principles. I do however think he may well be one of the very last 'working clas

On the other hand, much of his kindness and selfless acts in helping people was never advertised. (TO quote Stu) I did actually see Cloughie referee a game to raise funds for some post mens families (The postmen had been killed in a minibus accident returning from a footie match I think) in about 1979/80. Chris Ashley was one of the captains (IMMSC it was a County all stars vs a Forest all stars side, no current players but a load of ex's and various Caleb's) I can't remember the final score but I recall Cloughie giving Chris his marching orders. Craig might fill in some more details cos he

Mentioned elsewhere, Kev Roberts has a radio station called VIP, its available on Sky 0196, or online, if you like soul, northern, motown, disco, mod, and many other genres of music, its definitely worth checking out. Again as mentioned before, as far as im aware, its the only place in the UK to hear the legendary "Mouth" Chris Ashley, however, dont expect the same kind of show he was famous for on Trent and Century from earlier years, this is him playing "mod" music, with far less interuptions!

Fosset & Thorne / Radio Trent Ads / Chris Ashley
Craig Strongman replied to mick2me's topic in 80's Nottingham
S'cuse me replying to old posts, but ive only been a member for 14 days (at present), but i have an involvement with a lot of the folk mentioned here. Answers then, Fossitt and Thorne........, stopped trading in Nottm, but had other branches elsewhere. It was indeed Terry Thorne who voiced the "40p (piece!) socket sets free with every........... Machins Jeans...................admission time.it was me doing the voicer for them! saldly, they went bankcrupt, Steve Machin , a good friend, does the music etc at Panthers home games. Radio Trent
Craig Strongman replied to mick2me's topic in Nick Palmer's Nottstalgia General Music Chat.
Yep, even im ion there, as for Chris Ashley, heres a couple of things, firstly, hes on VIP Radio, sky 0196, every saturday evening with a show called The Mod Squad, and, back in 1980, he was responsible for me not being able to walk for 3 days!. Basically, Chris decided i should join him and Graham Knight on a charity walk from Langley Mill, to Market Square in Nottm. We arrived ready for the leisurely walk at 10..00 am, but Chris did his arithmetic and timing, and concluded that if we walked, the pubs would be closed by the time we arrived, and so decided we would run the 11 or so miles. Now -
Tho not a fan in later years (lamented elsewhere here, the passing of the era of Chris Ashley). I see that Wikipedia have a pretty good entry for the station. Listing all the DJ's

A similar character is played by Ashley Peacock, I love him!! We are just going through the Richard Hillman saga where he's knocked off poor Maxine DO NOT TELL ME WHAT HAPPEN'S NEXT PLEASE!! Caz
