Guest
Someone commented the other day that new topics are a little 'light' lately. What about the shooting years ago by a woman in the Adult Education Centre on Shakespeare st? Fire display days at Central police Station? Cassius clay came to town. The whistle stop bar under vic hotel. Old dutch cafe on Thurland st. Wally Engles giant junk shop on Mansfield rd. Chadwicks sanitary report? Dancing on the enbankment- was that '48?? '47 floods. Winter of '62 . Rape night at the fair. Bikers at the white hart. Kool kat- shades- tudor court clubs...Come on!!!
banjo48 928
Remember the winter of 62 vividly, my dad always got up first around 6-00am every day, he'd have a fag, a morning cough then bring me and my brother (and mam) a cup of tea and we would get up for school. This morning it was dark, really dark, anyway dad did his normal thing and then got his snap bag and went to the door as usual, but when he opened it it was just a wall of snow ! He knew it had been snowing, but not that bad. After a bit of digging we found it was a snow drift over 6' high up against the door, that was the start of the big freeze, and dad had to give his job as a builder, away for 3 months as it was just too bad to do any bricklaying or building work. He had a mate who got him a temporary job at Gedling colliery, labouring, shunting wagons in the pit yard, horrible job for him but it kept food on our plate whilst the weather was so bad.
MargieH 7,614
My memories are of the winter of 1947. I was only 4 but I remember walking down Woodthorpe Drive from Mapperley with my Mum and there being a huge bank of snow down the length of the pavement - don't know if the snow ploughs had done it, I suppose they must have. I was allowed to climb up it in my little boots and walked along it for a while. It obviously made quite an impression on me as I can remember it vividly.
tomlinson 879
1947 for me too. Sucking icicles, bringing down snow overhangs from roofs. Ah! They don't make winters like that any more
hippo girl 1,995
I think you will find Kool Kat , Tudor court and the white Hart commented on many times in previous threads, just not sure which ones ?
Cliff Ton 10,503
A quick use of the Search button shows that several of those topics have been covered here in previous threads. A few include:- Floods of 47 http://nottstalgia.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=11845&hl=floods Kool Kat http://nottstalgia.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=10223&hl=kool#entry142970 White Hart bikers http://nottstalgia.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=12357&hl=shades#entry232267 Whistle Stop http://nottstalgia.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=12849&page=2&hl=%2Bwhistle+%2Bstop#entry268657 As for Rape Night at Goose Fair, I'd never heard of that until a few years ago when it was mentioned on Nottstalgia. http://nottstalgia.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=2005&page=12&hl=rape#entry277121 Difficult to believe that was considered a source of amusement, in any era. And that's almost as many threads resurrected as radfordred manages.
Michael Booth 7,364
I've just looked at the posts regarding 'Rape Night' but they don't explain what it means. I'm sure it must mean something other than the obvious.
Guest
micheal: i did'nt think it was the ' obvious'- my Mam told me that mostly bikers went that night( she was AJS mad! ) and girls and boys met and all the fun of the fair was had! I hope there is nothing horrible connected.
Guest
Cliff: i'm tiring of this everytime a subject is broached you have confronted me AND others with a history of threads- i thought this site was interactive- not a library!!! On the subject of past threads scroll back to picky post people.
TBI 2,351
Whether it be new threads or old threads, what's to complain about? I enjoy it all.
radfordred 6,284
I'm lost now so you get some shit for adding to old treads & told off for not looking? & instead of deleting my posts just delete me simples.
TBI 2,351
I was glad to see your ressurected threads, radfordred. I've noticed occasionally in the past, previous threads had been pointed out and sometimes I felt I could sense a bit of an accompanying 'tut tut'. Can't see any issue with Cliff's post at #6 though, I think the final sentence was tongue in cheek.
benjamin1945 16,245
Don't be like that 'Radfordred' i love your resurrections , and dry way you do it,and i'm sure most others also do as well,
Cliff Ton 10,503
Can't see any issue with Cliff's post at #6 though, I think the final sentence was tongue in cheek. It shows that different people can interpret something in different ways, with misunderstanding as a result. And by referring to - or resurrecting - old threads, newer members can find information which has already been put forward, and then they can add their own thoughts and memories.
carni 10,094
Though this link is about Hyson Green Flats, it has a reference in it to GooseFair and "The Rape Night" which is being discussed in the thread. You will have to scroll a long way down to the part titled, When The Fair Comes to Town. You will find some information on the said night. See what you think. Also, there is lots of personal stories to read about Hyson Green flats residents; I thought were very interesting. Ordinary stories from Ordinary Folk. I hope you find it interesting.http://www.academia.edu/5823352/An_Oral_History_of_Hyson_Green_Flats
Guest
carni: thanks for that- very interesting!
catfan 14,793
"Rape Night" as it was called was on the Wednesday night before the fair opened on the Thursday. Personally I always thought this a disgusting expression.
carni 10,094
I agree catfan, and if I knew the expression before I left Nottingham, I had certainly forgotten it until now. Thank Goodness!
Robbie 39
#11, radfordred As relatively new to Nottstalgia l am glad you and others resurrect old threads, Some of the old topics that have been resurrected l would never had known existed as l find the search facility on this site a little unreliable, so please keep it up.
