Bilbraborn 1,594
Our school swimming lessons were at those baths. Trouble was, the chlorine used to badly affect my eyes.
annswabey 599
I went to Radford baths too, when I was at Junior School, but when Beechdale Baths was opened we went there instead - seemed very posh in comparison!

Cliff Ton 10,530
Re - the Youth Club. If you check the two posts after Tompa's question, you'll see a map which showed the Youth Club in question, and Tompa agreed that was the one.
FLY2 10,109
Katyjay and iandawson. You must be so proud of your fathers who fought alongside Wingate. I've read several books on him, and he was definitely regarded as being a bit strange. Some of the hierarchy regarded him as a 'bloodthirsty killer' but surely that's what is required if you're fighting the Japs in the jungle. The conditions they operated under were truly horrendous, but with Ordes leadership and relentless endeavour coupled with the ability to never give in gave the men hope and encouragement. Without a doubt, they were the bravest of the brave. I thank them enormously.

OrphanAnnie 296
I lived on Garfield Road which was just off hartley Road. Did the Winsor become John Players' showroom? It faced the bottom of garfield. You could swap your No6 cigarette coupons for gifts at the showroom. There was always a whiff in the air when the Players factory was in production. And further up Hartley Rd was a block of flats.
DaveN 1,118
The Windsor cinema is a carpet showroom now. I think it was where you changed Players' cigarette coupons for gifts.
cambridgeST 7
I remember The Windsor very well watch Flash Gordon and Batman as a kid and flying home up Hartley road with my black mac buttoned round my neck as a cape lol
OrphanAnnie 296
Thanks Dave. Do you still get coupons in the cigarettes, used to get them with Embassy too but they were for rich folk!
Cliff Ton 10,530
There are photos of the cinema & coupon place here (scroll down to #13, after you've looked at all the other photos in the flickr album). http://nottstalgia.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=9731&
DaveN 1,118
I wouldn't think you still get coupons with cigarettes - I packed up smoking in 1977/
joe53 6
I remember walking down the boulevard to see my dad hanging out of the players clock! He was at Radford on the maintenance team I think he was having a crafty fag.then he got moved to the horizon place.
Cliff Ton 10,530
The clock has survived, but it looks a bit pathetic compared to its original home.
Radford Lass 1
I lived on Garfield Road in the 60's & 70's and could see the Players clock from my bedroom window. I could also hear the chime of the clock on the corner of Marathon Knitwear, the factory on the other side of Hartley Road.

My mum worked at Sanders newsagents on the corner with Hartley Road for many years.
Cliff Ton 10,530
Is Sanders the shop you can see here (lower centre) ? I'm afraid that's all there is of Garfield Road so you probably can't see your house.
Radford Lass 1
Yes, Cliff Ton, that's Sanders. To the left of what I think is the motor cyclist. I've looked round parts of Radford as it is now and unfortunately my house went with the demolition work, as did my primary school, Sidney Pearson Hill. Thanks for the photo. OrphanAnnie 296
Â There was a Green Shield Stamps showroom on Maid Marian Way, near to Brentford Nylons. I can't remember whether there was one in Radford. I have just come back from a weekend in Long Eaton, met up with my brother at Castle Marina and he took me for a tour round the Medders and Radford, all the original houses on Garfield Road have gone although the streets running off towards Radford Boulevard are still there. There was another newsagents further down run by the Garretts who were originally on Arkwright St, I had a paper round there.
