  1. We were all warned about all sorts of things when we were young - it doesn't mean that, with experience of life and maturity, we have to go on believing what we were told years ago. Freak is a very offensive word and the fact that people now feel able to be openly gay isn't a "lowering" of what has become acceptable. What has become acceptable has changed, that's all
  2. Does it matter that it's not "normal"? No!
  3. Brilliant video - thanks for posting. Wish I'd been there!
  4. The thing I remember most about Miss England was that she used to wipe chalk off the blackboard with her cardigan. Didn't know about the parties! No idea about Miss Allsopp's bust(!), but she was a very large lady all round. Your initial A Level subjects would be the worst imaginable to me, particularly Physics. I did French, German and History
  5. I remember all of those teachers, Alan. Miss Clarke was HORRIBLE! A few more names from me - Miss Allsopp (French), who was lovely, Miss Heath (PE), Mr Macnaughton ( Geog - strict but good fun)), Mr Hale (English), Miss Donaldson, later Mrs Payne( DS - "You'll never get a husband if you can't cook, girls"), Mr Lowe( Physics). All the girls fancied Mr Day!
  6. Have only had a quick look but can't find him for sure. Do you know any of his siblings' names?
  7. I liked Mr Downing - don't think he was mediocre! He taught me for History O Level. Miss Betts was very strict but a good teacher. When was your son there? - surprised to hear she was still around, although at that age we always thought people were much older than they actually were. Anyone over about 25 was ancient!
  8. Most of those teachers must have left by the time I went to Bilborough - 1968. The only ones there that you've mentioned that I remember are Mr Robinson (Chemistry), who was great, Mr Jacobs, who was lovely and a great teacher (you're right, he did leer at us girls but definitely harmless), Mr Kirton and Mr Singleton, both of whom I remember but they never taught me. Some of the ''older" teachers who were there in my time, were Mr Downing (History), Mr Redding (Maths?), Mrs Bielby (DS), Miss Betts (French). Do you 2 remember any of them? We may have discussed Mr Downing before, I think.
  9. Oh Michael - how kind of you to post this! It's so long ago, I'd forgotten about it!
  10. Pleased to hear Mr Jacobs is still around. I used to see him in town years after I'd left school but as I've got no close family left in Nottm now, I very rarely go there. He must be in his 80's??
  11. Alan You must have been in the year above me at Bllborough Grammar. I remember all the teachers you mention, particularly Mr Bland with his Urea jokes and Mr Jacobs
  12. Bilbraborn Yes, Miss Swindell was the Headmistress. I think she hated most pupils! She didn't like me because I couldn't sew. I was good at the "academic" stuff, but that didn't count!
  13. I've got a country dancing photo from Glenbrook Juniors, circa 1967. Our outfits are exactly as you describe, Paddy. As it was a girls only school, some of the girls are dressed in male outfits.
  14. Firbeck, you've described George and Harry exactly! I remember Harry more and can picture him still - your "not very talkative" was very polite. -I'd say he was a right old misery!
  15. I think most people at BGS went to the Rodney. Well under age, of course. When I used to go there were 2 oldish men working there who used to bring drinks to the table - I think their names were George and Harry - this would have been in the 70's. I remember Mr Yarnell although he didn't teach me. I dropped Physics as soon as possible - couldn't stand it.
  16. Lovely photos. Well done to you! Your Mum and Dad look so proud, it reminds me of my parents when i graduated
  17. What a brilliant photo- thanks for posting. My Great Grandfather was in the RAOB - menioned on his gravestone - but no idea which Lodge and neither Notts Archives or the RAOB have any relevant records.
  18. Wasn't to be, was it? Shame!
  19. I want Argentina to win, too, but I don't think they will
  20. What was the name of the shop on Clumber St - a Stationery/card type shop - half way up on the left hand side - same side as the Lion. This woud have been in the 70's. Failed miserably in an interview for a Saturday job there!
