  1. Really sorry to hear that, Lizzie. From what I understand, not all of the tests are 100% accurate - probably closer to 80% at best. It also depends on whether it was a blood test or a swab. I can only imagine how difficult it would be to take a swab test on an Alzheimer’s patient as the swab has to go to the back of the nose. It may turn out that the numbers of who died from CV19 are either over or under-reported. Only when we’re able to see the real numbers of “excess deaths”, will we know the full impact.
  2. Further clarity on tonight’s speech. https://youtu.be/N8DuyMihnjE
  3. “You can even play sports, but only with members of your own household,” says Boris Johnson, forgetting that not everyone has sired an entire cricket XI.
  4. Just another day in Subway?
  5. If that’s the case, why has Trump been issuing Executive Orders left, right and centre, which seem not to need the agreement or approval of either Senate or Congress?
  6. 9th May is also Europe Day. Europe Day held on 9 May every year celebrates peace and unity in Europe. The date marks the anniversary of the historic 'Schuman declaration'. At a speech in Paris in 1950, Robert Schuman, the then French foreign minister, set out his idea for a new form of political cooperation in Europe, which would make war between Europe's nations unthinkable. His vision was to create a European institution that would pool and manage coal and steel production. A treaty creating such a body was signed just under a year later. Schuman's proposal is considered to
  7. Had an interesting chat today with an ITU nurse (neighbour’s daughter) who’s been working with Covid-19 patients. While much of what she has had to deal with is harrowing, losing both patients and colleagues, it seems that as I had all the symptoms of the virus back in March. I may be able to help with trials which take blood plasma and extract antibodies to transfuse into patients with CV19. As long as they don’t take more than an armful...
  8. That’s what we thought after the H1N1 outbreak in 2009, and indeed planning took place, PPE was stockpiled, and contingencies were “war-gamed”, including Exercise Cygnus as recently as 2016/7 Then, someone looked at how much that all costs, and decided to cut it all back to the bare bones and not renew out of date items. So, once this pandemic is over, and unless we as a country are willing to invest the millions it will cost, expect that to be repeated.

  10. Slabs here used to be 24 cans. Then they went to 20 cans. And then to 18. But the price stayed the same. And Jasper Carrott was brilliant live. TV never did him justice.

Yes, it’s terrible that they’re allowed to have a break now and again from their 12-hour shifts caring for the sick and dying to boost morale.
  14. Totally agree, Phil. And thats why I’ve been increasingly drawn towards Humanism. All the caring and sharing, without needing to believe in a God of any hue. https://humanism.org.uk
  15. That’s Elon Musk’s chain of satellites, getting ready to take over the world. https://www.telegraph.co.uk/technology/2020/04/01/elon-musks-starlink-satellites-light-skies-uk/
  16. When I lived in Rainworth and commuted into the city down the A614, I used to see at least one accident a week on that three lane section. Either idiots playing chicken with oncoming traffic or not noticing cars turning into the Jet petrol station. All different now. Two lanes, 50 limit, and average speed cameras.
  17. Well, two weeks into my spell as an NHS Volunteer Responder and so far, I’ve had a grand total of two alerts. One where the client didn’t need any help and had no idea why I was calling her, and the second where they got the contact number wrong so couldn’t get in touch. Can only hope that this improves, or it will have been a complete waste of time. Still, should hopefully be getting a few jobs from “Giving for Gedling” delivering food next week.
  18. Sorry to hear, Sue. My condolences.
  19. Thanks Margie et al. There certainly will be something organised to celebrate her achievements, including getting the Polish equivalent of the MBE only last year. It will no doubt include plenty of vodka! There may also be something taking place at the Bomber Command Memorial Centre as she was quite heavily involved with that too. Her first husband was a Lancaster navigator in 300 Squadron, and her second husband had a wide ranging career in aviation. He started on Lancasters, was one of the pilots used for The Dambusters film, then flying search and rescue helicopters in Malaya du
  20. Not long back from Wilford Hill. Wife’s aunt died a few weeks ago and was buried today. She was 97 and Served in the RAF during WW2 after being put in a gulag by the Soviets. She had meticulously planned her funeral, which should have taken place at the Polish Church on Sherwood Rise with an honour guard of Polish scouts and attended by the Polish Consul. Instead, there was no funeral, no mass, no wake, and only four close relatives and the priest to see her being put in her grave. All because of this bloody virus.
  21. Not a bad bike rider in his day, either.
  22. Dawn Trader are still going. I used to work with the lead singer, Mick Preston. Last saw him a couple of years ago when DT played Arnold Carnival. As well, Ian, one of the founders of Way Ahead also used to work with us at BT. At the beginning, he was running WA in his spare time until it really took off.
  23. That bloke in the first floor flat must be a strange one to need all that stuff, especially the dildo!
  24. Haricots blanc en sauce tomate, sur pain grillé?
  25. Exactly. Holding the government to account, as someone has to.
