  1. There was a Brough outfit which sold for £58k in 2008. Could that be it? http://www.jap100.com/2008auctionresults.htm
  2. Looking at his page on Wikipedia, it says: In 1910, a number of coal miners in the Rhondda Valley began what has come to be known as the Tonypandy Riot.[69] The Chief Constable of Glamorgan requested troops be sent in to help police quell the rioting. Churchill, learning that the troops were already travelling, allowed them to go as far as Swindon and Cardiff, but blocked their deployment. On 9 November, The Times criticised this decision. In spite of this, the rumour persists that Churchill had ordered troops to attack, and his reputation in Wales and in Labour circles never recovered.[76]
  3. Banjo, should we call you Grenville from now on?
  4. There's a roadside food van on the way to Norwich with the sign "Try Sue's lovely baps". I've never had the courage to stop and find out whether they are lovely or not.
  5. There are also some very similar images/buildings in Kensington, and a view down North End Road could give a view over the (then) houses to Lots Road. http://www.francisfrith.com/kensington,greater-london/photos/
  6. Listening to the voice-over, it reminded me of Harry Enfield's characters, Mr. Cholmondley-Warner and Mr Grayson. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gou1cspUfdY&list=PLD46ED9033441F767&index=10
  7. If it was Lots Road PS, then looking at the curve of the road and comparing it to a street map, a possible candidate could be Fulham Road. Can't find any photos yet, though.
  8. Boing! There's a new Brough being brought out soon, although the only things it has in common are the name and the number of wheels. What is interesting, though, is that they have put together a history of the marque which some might like. http://www.broughsuperiormotorcycles.com/catalogue_feuilletable/brough.html
  9. Same as Pianoman, we used to have a Pyrex bowl which got topped-up whenever we had a roast. As well as bread & dripping sandwiches, my mum used it for frying, too. As unhealthy as some seem to claim it is these days, it didn't stop my dad from living to 90 and his sister to 93. And when me and the wife went to Sainsbury's yesterday, we were disgusted to see they were selling beef joints for Christmas with every last bit of fat trimmed-off. We weren't the only ones to be less than pleased. Other customers were saying the same thing.
  10. Interesting that those clippings mention Boswell as slang for gypsy. I found one of my ancestors was a Boswell (or Bosville) who lived around Newark/South Collingham, and was by all accounts a gypsy. Might also explain why i enjoy caravanning so much.
  11. Not really that new, though. I remember Fords selling stuff at rock-bottom (especially toys) in the 60s. And then there was Supasave on Oakdale Road, in the old Rio Cinema, which seemed to be the local forerunner of Kwiksave. Definitely signs of the times.
  12. Mick, Lay off the Wisniowka the cherries aren't good for you.
  13. #20 Siddha My wife was at St Augustine's, too, in 1964, and they were still using the same hall. It was in a factory on Alfred Street North. The building is still there today. #21 David Remember Mr Sumner well, although I didn't have to visit his office - well, not that many times!
  14. #6 David, We did have country dancing at Westdale Juniors when I was there. I remember being forced into doing it. The upside, though, was that I got to partner Karen, my 'crush' at the time.
  15. Now that you mention him, Phil Lovejoy was also a good mate of my brother, Mick. He was a regular visitor to our house on Fernleigh.
  16. So if it's not the size of the database, what else? Google? I noticed it was showing as an active member earlier. Would the custom skin be an issue?
  17. Good point, Trevor. There's nearly 23,000 posts in the Word thread alone. And from what little I know, while the content of each post is small, I assume each post would be indexed. Would it be a big deal to delete it and maybe start again?
  18. Recognise one person on there - my brother's best mate, David Hubbard. They're still close pals, 50 years later. And there's quite a few surnames that are familiar from when I was at Carlton le Willows, presumably younger siblings.
  19. Just had this message, not seen it before anywhere: Fatal error: Out of memory (allocated 22020096) (tried to allocate 491520 bytes) in /home/nottstal/public_html/forums/cache/skin_cache/cacheid_13/skin_topic.php on line 650 If it's of any help, this article suggests either getting the host to allocate more memory, and/or adding a PHP.ini file into folders - http://wordpress.org/support/topic/fatal-error-out-of-memory-allocated-30408704 Hope this helps in some small way!
  20. It is now. It wasn't when the grand plan was formulated.

Scan was in Vic Centre. That was where I bought a Black & Decker HS264 electric drill - in 1979, if I recall correctly. I'm still using that drill. They don't make them like they used to...

Fancy being a Maths teacher? You don't need a degree in Maths, or even A-levels, to work in teaching at this place. Being able to count past ten might be advantage.
  23. #6 Mentioned this elsewhere (http://nottstalgia.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=11394#entry203981). It was the great Stalinist idea of the leader of Gedling's previous administration - close all the leisure centres, including Calverton, and build a new one on the KGV field. He thought he could ride roughshod over the King George Fields covenants and restrictions, yet was quite happy to use them as ammunition to get rid of Arnold Town football club to the wilds of Eagle Valley, and to near-extinction. Turned round and bit him in the end, when he got ousted from power and the new regime scrappe
  24. If you catch it right, you can park on Leengate, like many of the hospital staff do.
  25. As Gedling Borough Council found out to their cost when they tried to redevelop the KGV field in Arnold, these are protected spaces and virtually impossible for councils or land-grabbers to do anything with but leave them as playing fields. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/King_George%27s_Fields
