  1. When BT occupied 47 Upper Parliament Street, above the Post Office, there was a small underground car park underneath the building, accessed from Norfolk Place through a shutter door next to the PO’s back yard. The spiral access down from the gate was very tight. With some users, you could tell what the colour of their car was by the paint they left on the wall.
  2. This all brings back memories of when the Soviet Union and other Eastern Block countries sent female athletes to the Olympics who were more butch, and probably had more testosterone in them, than the blokes. Although I also remember the time when cyclist Beryl Burton beat all the blokes in a 12-hour cycle race. And she was most definitely female - I had a crush on her daughter in the early 70s!
  3. Just did a bit of digging on two of the services mentioned. eConsult Health Ltd is a company, not a part of the NHS. https://find-and-update.company-information.service.gov.uk/company/07628675 Patient Access is run by Egton Medical Information Systems Ltd. Again, not a part of the NHS. https://find-and-update.company-information.service.gov.uk/company/02117205 But I’m sure your personal and medical details are perfectly safe in their hands.
  4. Defintely not me. I know we start school early in this country, but I wasn’t born until 1956!
  5. Ifs, and buts, and maybes, linked by quite tenuous attempts to paint Labour as at risk of being taken over by Militant Tendency. Starmer has done a lot of work behind the scenes to remove any possible influence the hard left have on the Labour Party. As regards Russian influence on elections, you might want to have a read of the report from the Intelligence and Security Committee. The same report that has been ignored by the government. https://isc.independent.gov.uk/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/CCS207_CCS0221966010-001_Russia-Report-v02-Web_Accessible.pdf
  6. You said “Dragging the UK into a socialist government led by a Trotskyite pacifist”. Who is the leader of the Labour Party?
  7. Are you saying that Keir Starmer is a “Trotskyite pacifist”? Or indeed a socialist? You must be seeing something that others can’t, including most of Corbyn’s fan base who view him as a “red Tory” As for furthering Russian interests, the current government has done far more than anyone to help in that respect by legitimising Putin’s oligarchs - including putting one into the House of Lords despite his connections to Putin and to the KGB.
  8. Have to admire them. Mykolaiv governor Vitaliy Kim: “We’re getting prepared for yet another Russian assault. In particular, we have booked 50 buses to transport new POWs.” He was serious, by the way.
  9. I read a quote the other day that there are already 125,000 Russian soldiers in Finland who have been there since the attempted invasion in 1939. They’re all six feet under the ground. Its worth reading up on this conflict, as there seem to be some striking parallels with the current war, especially around the tactics employed. https://www.rferl.org/a/finlands-winter-war-with-the-soviet-union/30280490.html
  10. The other thing that may be slowing a PC down is anti-virus software. While Linux and MacOS aren’t immune from malware, it’s very rare and the way both operating systems work makes it difficult for a virus to get into the machine.
  11. Could be the PC, or it could be the install procedure. When I wanted to put Ubuntu Linux on my (near twenty years old) Windows XP desktop, I downloaded the Linux installation file on a Windows 10 laptop and burned it to a DVD. I put the DVD into the drive on the desktop and powered the machine up. The PC then picked up the install files and ran them, giving me the choice of booting into either system. Once I’ve finished copying pictures, documents, music, etc, from Win to Linux, I’ll be deleting XP completely. What is interesting is how well Linux copes with an old mach
  12. It’s understandable that NATO can’t do anything without provoking a full scale war, but as the civilian situation gets worse, perhaps the UN should step up. It would need the veto removing from Russia (and probably China) to get beyond the Security Council but if aircraft can fly under the UN flag, would Putain (to use his French nickname) take on UN forces?
  13. Perhaps the Ukrainians are saving most of their aircraft in case Putin sends in the bombers, having exhausted most of his ground offences? There is some credible thought amongst those who know these things that the Russians are losing more and more tanks, heavy weapons, and support vehicles. What breaks down also seems to be getting nicked by farmers with tractors. The famous 40km convoy hasn’t moved in days and the consensus is that they’ve run out of fuel, thanks to the Ukrainians targeting fuel trucks. There’s also a video on YouTube showing a train full of civilian truck
  14. And while some politicians seem quite happy to have those billionaire oligarchs here, we appear to be full, especially in Lincolnshire (?) when it comes to refugees, according to one MP - the red faced “Sir” Edward Leigh. https://www.joe.co.uk/news/ukraine-sir-edward-leigh-320259
  15. There is another lever which may determine China’s position in this - Trade. Their exports to US, Europe and ASEAN absolutely dwarf their dealings with Russia. Modern Chinese leaders are quite pragmatic. Would they risk damaging their economy just to keep Putin in his palace? https://www.statista.com/statistics/256350/main-export-partners-for-china-by-export-value/
  16. Yes, the pub was the Engine House. Built on the old Brickworks site close to the top end of Burgass Road. My uncle would have loved it as he liked a drink and it would have been about twenty yards from his house had he not died before the pub was built.
  17. The old 25in OS maps show the houses but not their names or street numbers. This is how it looked in 1900. https://maps.nls.uk/view/115392014
  18. If you want proper horseradish sauce, nip down the Polish shop and ask for a jar of ‘Chran’. Far stronger than British stuff. It will blow your cobwebs away.
  19. I wonder if there is a connection to Harry Dickman. Dickman’s Cottage in Lambley is rented out as a holiday home. Friends of ours from down south use that as a base whenever they are up here. https://www.dickmanscottage.co.uk
  20. Love Sculpture might have vanished as a band, but both Dave Edmunds and Terry Williams certainly went on to bigger and better things. As did Adrian Gurvitz from Gun.
  21. They have transcribed 38,000,000 records, so there is always the chance of the occasional human error creeping in. FMP only said that they were aiming for a 98.5% accuracy rate. https://www.findmypast.co.uk/help/articles/4415870561041-how-was-the-1921-census-transcribed-
  22. It has been, and been found to be a load of conspiracy theorist b*llocks.
  23. Certainly did go wrong for Leicester and their so-called fans, one arrested for attacking Forest players on the pitch, and hopefully more arrests on the way for the morons who attacked a couple of city centre pubs full of people trying to enjoy a quiet Sunday lunch.
  24. The other evening, they had a Division Two match - Forest vs Sheffield Wednesday from October 1976. Forest won 6-1 and most of the players went on to form the nucleus of the team which went on to much better things. But no matter how hard I looked, I couldn’t see myself in the old East Stand even though I know I was there.
